Biography: W. E. Partridge

W. E. Partridge, now living retired in Alta, is numbered among the old settlers of Buena Vista county and is one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War. He is a native of England, born in Berkshire, June 3, 1833, a son of James and Anne (Edwards) Partridge, who spent their entire lives in that country. The father was a mechanic, being a wheelwright by trade, and he also engaged in farming. His family numbered thirteen children, of whom twelve grew to years of maturity.

W. E. Partridge, whose name introduces this review, spent the years of his boyhood and youth in his native land and when fifteen years of age accompanied a brother to the United States. He first located in Maryland and secured work on the construction of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in that state, after which he spent two years working on the canal. He then took up his abode in Pennsylvania and from that state removed to Illinois, where he engaged in farming until 1882 when he came to Buena Vista county and purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land on section 34, Nokomis township. This was an uncultivated and unimproved tract when it came into his possession but he at once began to develop the land, erected a good house, barns and outbuildings, and now has a well improved and valuable farm property, whereon he made his home for twenty-seven years. He planted a good orchard, which is now in bearing, and beautiful shade trees add to the attractive appearance of the place. In addition to general farming he engaged in raising stock, keeping registered shorthorn cattle and good grades of hogs. In 1908 he removed to Alta and is now living retired.

Mr. Partridge’s private affairs were interrupted at the time of the Civil war when, loyal to the best interest of his country, he enlisted September 9, 1861 at Aurora, Illinois, as a member of Company F, Thirty-sixth Illinois Infantry, joining the regiment at St. Louis. From that city they made their way to Rolla, Missouri, and Mr. Partridge participated in many of the important battles, including Pea Ridge, Perryville, Chickamauga, Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville, and was with Sherman on his march to Atlanta. He was also for four months on duty at New Orleans, his regiment acting as guard to General Sheridan. After a hard service lasting four years and two months he was mustered out at New Orleans and was honorably discharged at Springfield, Illinois.

When the country no longer needed his services, Mr. Partridge returned to Illinois and took up his abode in Kankakee county, where he purchased eighty acres of land, which he operated for sixteen years prior to taking up his abode in Iowa. It was prior to his enlistment for service in the war that Mr. Partridge was married, the lady of his choice being Miss Harriett Cottew, who was likewise born in England, coming to America when but two years of age. Their marriage was celebrated in Ottawa, Illinois, in 1860, and their union has been blessed with ten children: George, who follows farming in Nokomis township; Martha, the wife of William Miller, a farmer of Linn Grove, Iowa; Lizzie, the wife of Charles Reese, of Nokomis township; Charles who follows farming on the hold homstead in Nokomis township; Lincoln, who is engaged in farming in Minnesota; Ida, the wife of G. H. Tutt, a resident of Marathon, Iowa; Kate, the wife of John Sassman, who follows farming near Albert City, this state; Frank, who carries on farming near Marathon; Hugh; and William who died when eighteen months old.

Mr. Partridge gives his political support to the republican party and cast his first presidential ballot for Abraham Lincoln. He has held some township offices. He keeps in touch with his old army friends through his membership in the Grand Army of the Republic at Alta, of which he has served as vice commander. He has been identified with the Methodist Episcopal church at Alta for several years. His labors have contributed in substantial manner to the development and progress of Buena Vista county and not only as a worthy pioneer settler but also as a loyal defender of the Union cause he is well deserving of mention in this volume. His circle of friends is large and all esteem him for his genuine worth. In 1908 he had the pleasure of visiting his old home in England where he remained from July 12 until the 23rd of August.

- C.H.
I'm looking for any information on my great-great grand uncle -- Geoge Ross -- who died in Sioux Rapids, Iowa (Buena Vista County) on Jan. 28, 1921, according to a FamilySearch Family Group Record AFN:C0X5-60.

We was born Dec. 1, 1835 in Bramley By Leeds in Yorkshire, England, the youngest of 11 children born to John (Sr.) and Mary Ross. A cousin and I believe the family immigrated about 1845. I am descendant from one of George's older brothers, John Ross Jr. (b. 1830), who ended up in Wisconsin.

I would appreciate learning any information or insight you might have.

Looking for information re: Peter T. Anderson, b. 03 Sept 1847. He was from Wiota, WI and married to Ella Kerns. Ella died in 1869 and Peter is not listed in the subsequent census records in WI any longer. He is also not buried in the cemetery where his wife is buried. I have info that he died in Storm Lake, IA on 26 July 1907, but no verification and no idea what happened to him after Ella died. They had one child together, Martha A. Anderson, b. 09 Dec 1868. Martha was my gg grandmother. I have info re: Peter prior to his wife's death, but nothing later. I believe Martha may have gone to live with her maternal grandmother in WI and suspect Peter remarried. Thank you!

Death lookup please?

Would someone out there possibly be able to look for the passing of an ancestor of mine? His name is Ormon S. Pratt. He and his wife are living in someone else's home in the 1880 census in Alta, IA. Ormon is age 25 at this time. Ormon married his wife (what looks like Albena in 1880 census, but is named Ellie E. Nietert in 1879 marriage) on April 21, 1879 in Buena Vista Co. I cannot find either one of this couple after the 1880 census. Do you have either one of their deaths there in your county? I don't know if they had any children or not. Thank you for whatever help you can provide in this matter. Sincerely, Georgia

In 1893 my father Howard Wilson was born in Marathon, Iowa to Milton and Elizabeth Platter Wilson. They only lived there about a year, but 7 years later they were again living at Marathon with their son James Wilson. Can anyone help me understand what that area was like at that time. Is there a plat map for Poland Twn? Would there be another reason the family would be in that area other than farming? I am grateful to all that will be able to help me with any research. Thanks!
I'm trying to find out when the town of Marathon, Iowa was originally platted. I'm from the the town of Earling which was briefly known as Marthan when it was platted in 1882. There's an old story that says the name was changed to avoid confusion with the town of Marathon. My research into the history seems to suggest that this old story is untrue. It would help to know when the town of Marathon platted. Thanks. Dave

Kari was born in Allamakee Co. Hedor settled on his "Uncle Knute's farm" in Allamakee. Last name of Uncle Knute was not revealed. At some point the Ellefsons, and Kari & Hedor moved to Buena Vista. From there they went to Sisseton Wahpeton Reserve in South Dakota, finally ending up in Lajord, Saskatchewan. Does anybody know what kind of name "Hedor" might be? I see from this web site that there is a possiblity he might have been Danish rather than Norwegian, as the rest of my relatives are.

I'm looking for 3 very specific instances when Donaldson played in Buena Vista County.
On August 14, 1914 Donaldson's team the All Nations played in Storm Lake, later that month on August 27, 1914 they played in Sioux Rapids. Donaldson returned to Buena Vista County in 1929 with a team called the Colored House of David and played in Newell on May 27, 1929. I'm looking for newspaper accounts of these games.
Donaldson traveled throughout the Upper Midwest during his 30 year career. Some say he would have been the best pitcher in the Major Leagues in his prime of 1911 to 1917 and before his service in WWI.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
If you are interested I can send you some background on Donaldson and his exploits in Buena Vista County and other parts of Iowa.
Sincerely
Pete Gorton
612-325-7815

I am looking for descendents of Ole and Auguste Brandvold Norby who are listed on the 1880 Federal census from Douglas Township, Clay County. They may have moved to South Dakota for a time. By 1890, Auguste and children were back in Sioux Rapids with children: Oscar, Anna, Albert, and Edward. Oscar later apparently lived in or near Rembrandt, IA as he and family are on the 1920 census from there. The Blacklin/Blaekkelien family lived near Sioux Rapids in the 1880's but later moved to near Albert Lea, MN. I am 99% sure I am related to Ole Norby and Guri/Julia Blacklin. If anyone has any information about any of these people, please reply. Thank you in advance.

I'm looking for information on Rev William Thomas MacDonald (1855-1938) and his wife Margaret MacDonald (1855/6-?) - they were first cousins. William and Margaret emigrated from Newtownards (where I live) County Down, Northern Ireland in the mid-1880s.

After a few years in Canada, they moved to the USA in 1889 and settled in Iowa. They had two children - Janet (born in Hubbard, Iowa on 6th March 1891) became a Professor of Classics at Butler University. Martha (born near Toronto, Canada on 16th December 1887) married a Mr McKelvie. Her daughter Martha McKelvie (born May 1928) married John H Holdridge in December 1949 and they had 3 children born during the 1950s. John was the US Ambassador to Hong Kong and Singapore.

I have been told that William MacDonald was posted to churches in Sioux City and Ames, but I have not yet found any trace of them in either of those locations. However, in the 1920 Census, William and Margaret (but not the children) appear in Storm Lake Township, Buena Vista County.

Does anybody out there know anything more about this family, or if William and/or Margaret are buried at Storm Lake?
http://iagenweb.org/boards/buenavista/queries/

Above is the link to the new Buena Vista County Iowa message boards. The old boards were sold to Ancestry.com some time back.

Those of you who posted messages in the past may need to submit new messages to the new boards so that folks searching the data base will find your message. The old messages will no longer be searchable.

For what ever reason the posts from both boards will reach the mailing list. However if you are not subscribed to the list your response from folks sho reply from the list will go to archives and not to you. If you are not on the mailing list you may want to get signed up.

Thanks,
Suzi

Dokken-Olsen -Kollen-Norway

My GGM, Rachel Alson OLSEN born 4/4/1850 in Hallingdal, NO. emigrated to this county in 1866. Married to Ole ANDERSON Bakken in 1877 and they farmed in Rural Cass Co.ND. Their children: Otto, Cora, Abbie (Abigail-my GM))and Inga.

The Hallinglaget of America found a Ragnild Dokken Olsen who emigrated in 1866 through CANADA on the ship Sirus. The birthdate in Gol, Hallingdal Church Records, matches that of my GGM, Rachel(4/4/1850). Ragnild Dokken Olsen came to America with a sister, Kristi Dokken-KOLLEN to Buena Vista, IO.A brotherHalvor Dokken and sister Margit Dokken PEDERSON that lived in Roseau Co., MN (she was already here when my Rachel came to America). I am trying to find any family with these names to verify that Ragnild is MY GGM, Rachel Alson OLSEN, so that I might complete my family tree.
