Wickman family in Tipton

My ggg grandfather Fontins JAN DANIELSSON, born in Svardsjo Sweden 23 Jun 1820, travelled to the U.S. in 1887, destination Iowa. His two sons came to the U.S. before him in 1868/1880: Fontins JOHAN JANSSON b 9 Apr 1845, destination unknown, and Fontins ANDERS JANSSON b July 14 1855, destination Clinton.
Recently, I found an old photo from Tipton, Iowa, in a family album. The head of the family in the photo is probably one of the brothers above.
---
In the 1880/1885/1900 census from Tipton, Iowa, I found this family:
John Wickman b April 1845 Sweden, immigrated 1868, married 1874, stone mason. (Johan Jansson ????)
Wife Annie b 1850 Iowa
John A Wickman b 1874
Edith m Wickman b April 1875
Arthur Wickman b Oct 1880
Bertha b Sept 1892
Brother Andrew Wickman b 1855 Sweden, stone mason (Anders Jansson ????)
Mother in Law Mary Anderson b Nov 1827 Sweden
Albert Wickman b Sept 1877
---
Could anyone confirm the theory that this is the correct family? If so, I would be very interested in any info regarding them.

Thanks,
Anders

1860 Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa? Was there a mental institution?

In searching a part of my family tree, I came across a census record that perplexes me and hope someone here can help me understand some information it contains. In the 1860 Federal Census for Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, Page 2, I show John D. Yerington with an illness of "Religious Excitement - Insane". There are several other "Insane" references within a few people listed on this census. This seems unusual to me. I have noticed other references to "Insane" in other census records...but not so many on one page or within 2 or 3 pages of each other. It should be noted that John is not living with his wife, Sarah (Wade), who is listed in another township in the same county, with their 3 children. Ultimately, by the 1870 census John is back living with his wife and they now have 7 children. He is not listed as "insane" in this census or in the subsequent 1880 census. It appears he died after the 1880 census...and Sarah remarried to Abraham Christian for a short time because by the 1900 census he is also deceased and Sarah is found living with her son, Dan W Yerington in Cedar County.

I would appreciate any help to understand the dynamics of this family. If John had a "nervous breakdown" and was institutionalized, then I would just like to know that for my records. Thank you for any help you can provide.

THE TIPTON ADVERTISER. December 3, 1896.--"Frank" Holbrook has been spending the past week at his home here. He will return to the State University Saturday. He is succeeding well in his studies, and expects to graduate in the scientific courses in two more years. He has won a big reputation as a foot ball player, he being about the most brilliant player on the University team. He is a modest fellow and carries honor easily. He is in splendid condition weighing about 185 pounds. Their last game for the season was played the other day with Nebraska at Omaha. They played Thanksgiving day but the game was a draw. The field was icy and the weather near zero, and snow was falling. They stayed and played Saturday when they won nicely by 6 to 0. Holbrook was gain mentioned in the reports as of the most merit.

Amanda Dodson Maley

Does anyone have information about Amanda Dodson Maley, daughter of B.S. Dodson, wife of William Harris Maley? William Maley died in 1876, and in 1880 Amanda was living in Fremont Township, Cedar County, Iowa with (I think) her sister, Hattie. Amanda's children, however, were living in Little York, Illinois with their maternal grandmother, Margaret Paxton Maley. I would like to find out why this was, and also when and where Amanda died. I've visited the Stanwood Cemetery, where B.S., his wife Cynthia, and one son, Ezra, are buried and there are a number of Maleys, but I didn't find Amanda. Thanks!

Ellen/Helen Fairbairn and Robert Safley were born in Scotland, came to Cedar Iowa in the 1840's and raised a family on the farm. Would like to find some of the family. Ellen was the sister of my ggrandfather, John Fairbairn/Fairchlid. I have family information I would like to share. Melinda

Adin Williams 1860 census for Iowa Twp, Cedar County

Adin Williams was a 51 year old wagon maker born in NY. In his household were daughter Amanda age 15 born IN, daughter Mary F. O. age 12 born IN and son Dyer age 10 born IN

with an Oscar F. Williams age 26 farm laborer born in NY

I cannot find any of these folks in 1870 nor any death records (too early for Iowa.) They may have gone to California but I cannot find them. Finding a death record for Adin Williams that gives his mother's name would make a ton of people very happy. She is a major brick wall.

If anyone recognizes this family, I have a ton of info on Adin Williams' ancestors.

Information wanted about W Rollin McCaslin-Presbyterian Minister

A book, "The Presbyterian Church in Iowa, 1837-1900. Prepared by Committee of Synod of Iowa. Joseph Welton Hubbard, D. D. Chairman. Cedar Rapids, Jones & Wells, 1907" has an index reference to W Rollin McCaslin on page 215. Does someone have a copy of this book? I would appreciate knowing what was published about him. I know he was in Tipton, Cedar, Iowa in 1905 as he was on the Iowa State census with his wife Emma [Brown] McCaslin and their daughter Gladys B. Does anyone know what church he was serving?

Thank you for all your help.
Lois

I plan on taking a trip to Cedar County this summer and would like to know if there is a historical society and/or genealogy society to visit. I need to contact someone to see what resources are available in this county. I was able to find a few Web site, but some email addresses are bad and I need some contact people. Before I spend the money and time to travel across the United States, I want to know if this trip will be worth the visit.

I will be visiting the Mechanicsville Cemetery. If anyones needs a digital photo of a tombstone, let me know.

Charlotte

CEDAR COUNTY POOR FARM/CHACE/CHASE/McKibbon/Franklin

James Chace b. abt 1808, moved to Tipton, Iowa abt 1850. It is rumored that he lived to be 114 and died in the Cedar County Poor Farm. The page which would have listed his name was torn out of the 'book' when reviewed in 1986 by another relative. Any help on getting records abt the Poor Farm would be appreciated, or any information on the Chace family. Grave of James Chace unknown. His wife was 'Mary' or Polly (Strawn) may be buried in Cedar County. Two daughters, Elizabeth (Eliza) married a Joseph McKibben. Mary' sister (or cousin) Nancy m. Elijah Franklin who was killed in the Civil War and later moved to Moberly, MO. Mary was a Strawn, the daughter of Hiram Strawn and Catherine Wintermute (some confusion on whether Catherine was married to his brother Malon or Mahlon). Chace, Strawn, and Wintermute families migrated from Canada in 1840 to Illinois and then to Cedar Co, Iowa. Also looking for possible sons, William James b. 1838/Canada; John, b. 1837/Canada and living with Elijah Franklin in 1860 in Winnebago, IL, and Samuel Chase that was working as a farm laborer in Fairfield Twnshp in 1870 as a farm laborer. Any info appreciated.

I am looking for the name of the spouse of Hannah WYMER, my great-great grandmother, or any other information on the WYMER family. Hannah is listed in the 1850 Iowa Federal Census as living in Rochester Township, Cedar County, Iowa. Also listed are her children Solomon WYMER, Nancy WYMER and Margaret WYMER (my great-grandmother). Margaret was born in Cedar County in 1843, so I am wondering if her father (Hannah's spouse) died there between the years 1843 to 1850 and would be buried in Cedar County, possibly in Rochester Township. Also wondering if Hannah WYMER is buried in Cedar County, possibly in Rochester Township.
Additional information I have - Living in the same household in the 1850 census is her daughter Belinda WYMER and spouse John B. SCOTT with son Adam. Belinda married John B. Scott on April 12, 1846 in Cedar County. Nancy WYMER married John MARK on January 1, 1857 in Cedar County. My great-grandmother Margaret WYMER married Samuel MOORE on June 25, 1857 in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa. Hannah is also listed in the 1860 Iowa Federal Census as living in Rochester Township. Any additional information would be appreciated.

I was told by a family member that Mary's parents were Martin BUCHER and Mary CROSS, but there was no additional information. I have located a BUCHER family in the Cedar County census data for 1860 and 1870 with head of household Martin and wife Elizabeth. (Either Mary died, or this is an alternate name for her or this isn't the right family...) The listed children are Henry b. abt 1842, Eliza 1844, Joseph 1845, Martin 1848, Mary 1849, John 1857 and Elizabeth 1859.

Does anyone know of this family? The parents were born in PA and the children were born in OH according to the census. I'd like to determine if my Mary is the same as the one found in this family.

No. 3.--D. R. Smith builds house at 213 East 4th Street

Twenty or twenty five years ago, I had occasion to read the Tipton newspapers. In them were many reports of houses being built, so I made a note of the news item. The following is a copy of one such note:

1. NEWS ITEM WHICH REPORTED HOUSE BEING BUILT:
"Tipton Advertiser". August 11, 1910. "D.R. Smith Residence".--Another good improvement to Tipton's residence section is the new dwelling recently erected for D. R. Smith, by H. G. Willey & Son, contractors. The location is one of the best in the city, being on the Boulevard and one block east of the court square.

The exterior of the building as is shown by the accompanyhing cut is of tasteful design and the interior arrangement of the nine rooms it contains is convenient and artistic. The house is 30 x 30 on the ground and the surrounding porches extend for a lineal distance of 56 feet. The cellar which is all cemented and lighted contains a laundry room. The living rooms which are on the first floor are finished in oak. The bed rooms on the second floor are all finished in soft pine. It is heated with hot water and an Ideal gas plant affords gas for both cooking and light. It is also fitted with electric fixtures. The cost was around $3600.

N.B.: This house sits on the southwest corner at the intersection of East 4th Street and Mulberry, and is easily identified with the picture which accompanies the news item. When I came to Tipton in 1961, Don Wehde and family lived there. Later, Elgene Kleppe occupied it.--W.F.

I am trying to solve a puzzle for a contest. We are suppose to figure out a town name. Here are the clues: The Union Agricultural Society of Linn, Jones, Cedar, and Johnson counties held their first fair in this city in September of 1870. (The group worked hard to build the best racetrack in the state) The other clue is: On December 12, 1858, the first passenger train pulled up beside the boxcar that was being used as a depot. (The Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska railroad)

If anyone can name this town please let me know.

Joe
my e-mail: jbe@inav.net

I am trying to find out a little on the shinn from Laura and back.. if possible... lots of Shinns in West Virginia, maybe that's where they originated .. I don't know...... help!!!

1940's fire trucks, town of Pedee and Belmont Brass Band

My father was a volunteer fireman in Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa for 15-20 years. I would like a picture(s) of the fire trucks used by Tipton in the 1940's. I am also interested in old postcards of Tipton, Rochester, or Springdale.

There was a town of Pedee between Rochester and Springdale, but only the cemetery is still there. If anyone has information or pictures, I would be very interested. I have pictures of the cemetery entrance and of the gravestones of my family. There was a church and school at one time. Does anyone have any pictures of them?

The Belmont Brass Band of Pedee was organized in 1881. Members were: J.L. Corker, J.A. Roberts, C.P. Roberts, D.N. Hartson, M. Larne, M.A. Hartson and W.H. Linn. Does anyone have information or pictures of this band? W. H. Linn was the brother of my great-grandfather Andrew D. Linn. Would like a picture of the band, if one exists.

Thanks. Yvonne Linn

Dear Cousins: Please ask the Cedar County records for a copy of George Frains will. All his children are listed on it including my line Elizabeth Brown. My George Frain had these children stated on his Will: Elizabeth, Margaret Mary, Rachel, Levi, Peter, and another Mary. I have found George Frain on these Census: 1840 Cedar County, 1850 Iowa Township, Cedar County, Peter is near-by not in the George family, 1870 Census Rochester Iowa, 1880 Rochester Iowa Cedar County. My Elizabeth is born in New York, city of Rochester Monroe County in 1832 according to her obituary in the newspaper. Margaret Mary married Captain Andrew Walker. They are in the History of Iowa. page 242. I have been to the Frain's graves in Rochester. Elizabeth is buried next to Dr. John T. Brown in Philo Mendocino County California. George lists himself as a mason or plasterer. Does anyone know of any buildings he built that are still standing?

Looking for any information on John Carpenter born about 1802 New York.

I don't have any information on John's parent's or his Wife.
John Carpenter later migrated to Indiana. Listed in Fayette County, IN. John had 2 Children that I know of. Dennis Carpenter born 1832 Fayette County, IN. - Jane Carpenter born 1837 Fayette County, IN.
John and Children then migrated to Scott County, Iowa. In 1856 Dennis married Lucinda Porter (Scott County, Iowa)
Dennis and Lucinda later moved onto Cedar and Guthrie Counties in Iowa.Jane became a School teacher and I can find nothing on Jane after 1860 Scott County records.
After 1870 Jasper County Census Records I can find no more on John Carpenter.
John Carpenter was in Jasper County Iowa (Independence) for at leat 10 years.
1860 Jasper County records shows Lucy Carpenter Porter living in the same household as my John Carpenter. Lucy was the Daughter to Lyman Carpenter.
Through DNA testing we believe our Carpenter line connects to the Rehoboth Carpenter line.

I'm thinking that there is a chance that John Parents may past away.

In the 1860 census records (Guthrie County) Dennis shows Father to be from New York and Mother to be from Ohio.
Then Dennis in the 1900 Census Records (Latan, Box Butte Nebraska) shows his Mother to be from New York?
Not much to go on.
John Carpenter is in the 1840-1870 census records with a Porter Family. There seemed to be a close connect with these families other than the fact that Dennis married John and Rosanna Porter's Daughter Lucinda.

Jim Carpenter
