According to records I have found, my husband's great grandmother on his mother's father's side, Mary Louisa Butler nee Swain was the stepdaughter of Jacob Montgomery. I believe that the Jacob Montgomery age 8 in your message is Mary Louisa's half brother by her mother Polly Ann Howard Swain Montgomery. Polly Ann's first husband was Benjamin Swain who died in 1849 and she then married Jacob Montgomery. See Iowa State Census Collection, 1836-1925 for confirmation year 1856. I copied it below:
