Joseph E. BRITTAN wed Mavis HAYDEN, daughter of Edward and Ruth FITCH

They are on the 1915, 1920 census in Decatur Co. along with daughter Majorie J. who weds a Mr. Brown and moves before 1925 census with him to Montana. Dr. Brittan dies in 1924 and only his son Howard and widow Mavis are on 1925 census. Then Howard and Mavis move circa 1929 to Des Moines, Polk Co, Iowa.
Seeking marriage information for Marjorie. Since they were in Decatur Co for many years as reported by Leon Reporter, might there be an obitaury for the window Mavis after 1930 or for either of their children (even though they moved away?)
Does anyone have cemetery location for Dr. Brittan (perhaps the family is buried there?) -- I have hit a brick wall on descendants.
Leila Menzies and Fred Hewston

I see that someone had taken a great deal of time to post the Decatur Co, IA marriage records at the Decatur Co genweb site. However, these records are in .pdf and for some reason (maybe because the files are so large and my computer so slow) I cannot get these files to open.

I am looking for the marriage of Nancy Comstock sometime 1856-1860, give or take a couple of years. She MIGHT have married a man with the surname of Rice, but that is not confirmed.

Thanks. Cheryl Kemp

Shields Cemetery in Decatur County

On May 27, 2007, I went into the Shields Cemetery and was sorry to see that it had been vandalized. Apparently the damage was fairly recent because the breaks in the stones were white and fresh.

The cemetery is very hard to find, so a local person or persons must have done the damage. Also forest clearing or some sort of construction is being done on the west side of the cemetery, and a fence on the west side was damaged. Possible the work on the west side of the cemetery opened the place up and made it visible to vandals.

In the past, the cemetery was always mowed; and someone had even repaired the deterioration of some stones and cleaned others. It was one of the finest and oldest pioneer cemeteries that I have visited.

Ann Creswell Evans, widow of Revolutionary War soldier Joseph Evans, was buried in Shields Cemetery as were several of Joseph's children. Hundreds of people descend from this family.

Records of burials in Shields are posted at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/cemeteryDocs/Shields.htm .

I do not have a solution for this problem, but I did want to share my concerns my hope that the cemetery can be restored.
Scratch Eye Country School, Southeast of Leon, Iowa in Decatur County

I have a 1890s-era photograph of a country school named Scratch Eye or Scratcheye that was located southeast of Leon, Decatur County, Iowa. This school may have been in Eden Township. My grandparents, George and Alice Minthorn, lived in Eden Township in the 1890s and early 1900s. My father, Maynard Minthorn (1890-1973), and his siblings, Eber, Kezia, and Joseph Minthorn, went to school at the Scratch Eye. Is there anyone with information about this school and the children who attended, or the teachers? I am willing to send a photocopy of this school to those who might be interested. --Alice Minthorn Hall

McCann b. abt 1878 PA
m. 9/13/1902 in Mediapolis, Des Moines Co., IA to Jessie Hutchcroft(d. 1916).
Charles d. 1917. (ref. Decatur County Journal-Iowa Thursday, April l2, l9l7-murdered)
All census I have been able to locate for this immediate family, indicate Charles was born in PA. Per info from another researcher, his father's name was Samuel, mother's L. (Angney).
I have located a couple of 1880 census, matching some of my information. Hopefully someone is researching Samuel McCann's (or whatever spellings), in PA who may be able to verify whereabouts of a small son named Charles born about 1878....

Hello,
I am trying to find out information on Joseph A. Keshlear who married Margaret Hurst in 1921 in Decatur county Iowa.

Margaret was the daughter of George E. Hurst and Elizabeth Layton she was born I believe July 1897.

Joseph A. Keshlear was born, I believe December 1896. His mother was Lucy Barr. I am trying to find out who his father is.

Joseph and Margaret were married in 1921, the article states that Joseph had a cattle farm with his brother Barr Keshlear in Slater Colorado, just next to the Wyoming line.

In 1930 I find a Margaret Keshlear in Slater, Moffet county Colorado. She is widowed. Living with her are three children
Charles W. son 7 born in Wyoming
Margaret L daughter 5 born in Wyoming
Josephine M 3/12 daughter born in Colorado.

I am trying to find out if this is the same Margaret..Ie Margaret Hurst Keshlear. When did Joseph die, where is he buried.
What happened to Margaret and her kids after 1930.

I found a marriage record for a Charles W. Keshlear born about 1923 in Galveston Texas.
He married Ana L. Cunningham born 1929 in Galveston Texas on 21 June 1975. I am not sure if this is the child of Margaret and Joseph A. Keshlear...

any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much
take care
Denise

Questions about the WPA Death/Cemetery Records & Courthouse Records

Hello,

Someone out there in Decatur County familiar with the WPA death/cemetery records? and the courthouse records?

I would like to know how the WPA "made" their records for Decatur Co? Did they transcribe death records found at the courthouse? Or did the WPA actually go out and walk the cemeteries and make the records?

What I am getting at is are there actually two sets of records? Those death records at the courthouse? And a separate set made by the WPA?

Also there seems to be a set of burial records compiled by a Lois Slade. How did she do her work? Did she walk the cemeteries (highly unlikely) or did she just transcribe those of the WPA or did she go to the courthouse and transcribe the records found there?

Any help with these Decatur death/cemetery/burial records greatly appreciated?

Cheryl Kemp

I am looking for information on Leon W. Colter. I have him in the 1910 and 1920 Census as Living in Crawfor County Michigan in the village of Grayling, which is the modern day Frederick. He married Mary Eunice Hammond on 23 of April 1883. I have no other information on her. He though was born 26 of November 1857 in Erie, Pennsylvania.
THey had three children that I know of. Bertha E.(probably Eunice) born 1884, I only have this information on her, I believe she did not live long. Flora Mae born 1886 she is my great-grandmother, and Russell Hammond born 1895, he married a woman named Lottie and they lived with mom and dad in the 1920 census and had a daughter Hazel.
The children of Leon and Mary were born in Michigan, yet other than these two places I have no idea where they are or where to find them.
Any information will be greatly accepted and appreciated.

My wife's gr-gr-grandparents were Abner & Margaret King. They had a daughter, Lorina, born in 1843, in Claiborne County, Tn. Sometime after her birth the family moved to Decatur County. Lorina married Isaac Edwards, on 31 August, 1865. The couple then moved to Daviess County, Missouri, then to DeKalb County, Mo. I am seeking any information anyone may have in Decatur County regarding the King family. Am wondering if Lorina had siblings and when and where Abner & Margaret King died. Also would like to know if Isaac Edwards and Lorina King may have been married in Decatur County. Any information certainly would be appreciated. Thanks, Dennis

(born abt. 1838 in Inidana).
Children: (that I know of)
(Twin Girls)
Armada Smith (born December 17, 1876)
Arvada Smith (born December 17, 1876)
J.W. Smith (?)
***
Armada married James L. Carlton on May 31, 1891 in Decatur Co., Iowa. She died February 14, 1971 in Red Cloud, Webster Co., Nebraska. I have seen her name spelled as Armenda, Amanda, Allemeda, Attemeda and Armada.

Arvada married twice. First, to Alonzo Woodard on December 14, 1893. They divorced. Second, to Eli Carlton (brother of James L. Carlton, Armada's husband) on February 27, 1898. She died after 1910 and before 1915. She also went by Vadie and Vada.

I have very little information on J.W. Smith. He was a witness at Armada's wedding and listed as her brother.

Their father Joseph Smith died when they were young and Nancy Jane remarried a man with the last name Boyd.
I have an Evaline Switzer who was on the 1850 Decatur county census, but not on the 1860 Decatur census. I believe she died between 1856 and 1860 in Decatur.

I'm looking for ideas on how I can get a death date. I can't find her tombstone.

Her husband survived her and I believe died late 1894-1895 in Grand River, Wayne County. I can't find any info on his actual death date either.

Any suggestions greatfully accepted!!

Is there a volunteer here that will take digital photos and email them to me?

I've checked on RAOGK.com (where I volunteer for the area I live in) and have not been able to find a volunteer for Decatur County.

The Metier Cemetery was started when my great great grandfather, Andrew Pettis requested a place to bury his daughter Clarice in April of 1856. I'd so appreciate a photo of the cemetery sign and photos of the 6 Pettis graves that are located there. I'd be happy to pay for costs involved.
I am seeking information on Harriet, Margaret, and Mary MARIETTA - daughters of Uriah MARIETTA. All three were born in Fayette or Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania. Harriet was born about 1833, Margaret about 1839, and Mary about 1843. In 1857 the family left Pennsylvania for Iowa, settling initially in Clarke County. The three sisters appear in the Clarke County 1860 census, and that's the last I've found on them so far. The family later moved to adjacent Warren County, but the sisters do not appear in the 1870 census. Marriage, death, and cemetery records of both Clarke and Warren counties have been searched without success as yet. Does anyone have any information on what became of any these three young women?

25 November 1886 The Decatur County Journal
p. 4, col. 3

Obituary. John W. HARROW was born near Marysville, KY May 8th 1819 and died at his home north of Leon November 18, 1886, aged 67 years, 6 months and 10 days. He was married to Sarah P. GIBSON at Albia, Iowa, March 3d 1850. He resided in Decatur county some 33 years. Bro. Harrow united with the M.E. church at Fairfield in 1841, though for some reason he held no connection with the church in recent years. A widow and nine children survive him, three of whom were present when he died. He has been sick some 13 months though only bed-fast for a few days at last. He was buried by the writer from the Dunkard church, north east of Leon. C.L.N.

[Note: I am researching this family and would be happy to correspond with other interested researchers.]
`I’m looking for information on the ancestry of Stephen Switzer/Swisher. The last record I can find of him is the Iowa 1895 State Census where he is residing in Grand River, Wayne County. He was born in VA/WVA in 1815. He is on the 1840 and 1850 Guernsey County, OH census. By the 1856 Iowa Census he is in Richland Township, Decatur County, IA living next door to his son-in-law Noah Green. His wife Evaline (Ferryman) appears on this census with him. By the 1860 census, he is still in Richland township, but his wife no longer appears on the census. He is still in Richland on the 1870 census. I haven’t found him on the 1880 census yet.

I’m looking for information on where he and Evaline are buried. Ideally, I would like information on his and/or Evaline’s parents/siblings.

Any help or direction gratefully accepted.

Thanks!

Martha

Hello,
I am researching a Frazer family listed in the 1856 Decatur Co., Iowa state census & 1860 federal census for. They were living in Centre Twp in 1856. They came from Guilford Co., North Carolina. On page 208 of the 1856, Centre Twp, Family #'s 170 and 171.
170:
Daureus Frazer 49, F, born in NC
John Frazer 18, M, born in NC
Joshua Frazer 15, M, NC
171:
Zimre Frazer 24, M, NC
Sarah (Davenport) Frazer, 24, F, Indiana

In the 1860 Decatur, Eden Twp, census it has:
1860 Eden, Decatur, Iowa census:
John Frazer - 23, M, NC
Nancy J. Frazer - 23, F, IN
Zimre Frazer - 28, M, NC
Sarah Frazer - 27, F, IN
Joshua Frazer - 19, M, NC
Mary J. Frazer - 4, F, IA
Pleasant A. Frazer - 2, M, IA
Seth M. Frazer - 7 mos, M, IA
Julia Frazer - 7 mos, F, IA
Dorcas Frazer - 45, F, NC
Pleasant Davenport - 22, M, IN

Who is Nancy J. that is married to John in 1860? I believe my husband is descended from John and Nancy J., but not absolutely sure, trying to find out. They moved from NC to IA about 1855 then from Iowa to Vigo County, Indiana after 1860. They are in Indiana until their deaths. I am hoping to find other people researching this Frazier family also. Please contact me. Thanks.
