Can anyone adrd to this family? I'd love to hear from anyone researching this family, Thanks, Barbara

John Ross LeLacheur, who resides in section 29, township 26,
range 32, Cherry county, Nebraska, has a valuable estate which he
has gained by industry and good management. He was born in
Delaware county, Iowa, in 1876, on a farm.

Elisha LeLacheur, the father of our subject, was a native of
Prince Edward Island, born in 1831, and came of French
parentage. He grew up in that country and came to America with
his parents when he was a lad of eleven, the family settling in
Iowa, and he attended the country schools in Delaware county, and
was married there in 1863 to Mary J. Bliss, of English and Yankee
stock, the mother now residing in Mullen. John Ross LeLacheur
was one of four children in his father's family, named as
follows; Phoebe E., Frank W., John R. and Wm. H., and he was the
third member in order of birth. In 1882 our subject moved to
Nebraska, driving from Iowa with a team and covered wagon,
bringing with them a yoke of oxen and three horses, also three
colts. The trip was a hard and tedious one, they being obliged to
camp out at night, but they came through with no serious
drawbacks, and after arriving in Nebraska settled in Nance
county, where they lived for four years, then came to Cherry
county and settled on a ranch situated eleven miles northwest of
Mullen. There their first dwelling was a tent, in which they
lived during the first summer. Storms and hail literally tore the
tent to pieces in a few months, and they were obliged to build a
sod house before the rough weather came on in the fall, and also
built a hen house of sod, barns and sheds for their stock. They
had hard times at first, but gradually kept improving the place
and tried to farm, but lost several crops during the dry years,
and had bad luck. On October 23, 1894, the father died as a
result of an accident. He was helping fight a prairie fire and
was so badly burned that he only survived his wounds eighteen
hours. On January 1, 1901, the old ranch homestead building
caught fire and burned to the ground. One son, William, and his
family occupied the dwelling at the time, and his wife was
awakened at four o'clock in the morning by the smell of smoke,
found the house on fire and they barely escaped from the burning
building with their lives. As it was, William's hair was badly
singed and his night clothes were nearly burned off his body. His
wife and their child were almost caught in the fire, but managed
to escape without serious harm. This put an end to occupying the
old ranch house, but the place is still used as a summer pasture
for stock.

In 1899 our subject went on a ranch of his own, which was
situated in section 29, township 26, range 32. He had been
married in December of the year previous, to Maggie Stevenson,
daughter of Frank Stevenson, an old settler in western
Nebraska. Mrs. LeLacheur's mother was prior to her marriage, Miss
Adelaide Allen, born in Pine Grove, Warren county,
Pennsylvania. The young couple at once started out to build up a
good home together, and worked hard and faithfully to accomplish
that end, and have succeeded in a marked degree. Mr. LeLacheur
is now the owner of a fine ranch of 640 acres, all of which is
fenced and improved with good buildings, and he is extensively
engaged in the stock raising business, also farming quite a
portion of the place. He has two children, Clyde and Ross.

One brother, William, also owns a good ranch of 640 acres,
which he established in 1900, and is located in sections 26 and
27, township 25, range 32, this being the property of his wife,
who acquired it through homestead rights. She was Miss Anna
Gibson, daughter
page 180

of Alexander Gibson, an old settler in McPherson county,
Nebraska, and her mother's maiden name was Ellen Morrison. Two
boys have been born to William Horton LeLacheur and his good
wife, namely; Ralph and Earl.

The LeLacheur family was among the first to settle in this
part of Cherry county, coming here when there were but two houses
in the entire neighborhood in which they located. Each has done
his full share in the upbuilding of the region, and take leading
parts in the community. During the early days the subject of
this review and his brother Frank, captured two deer and tamed
them so that they became household pets, but during the severe
hail storms that swept the country and destroyed the tent in
which they lived, these animals were killed, and the entire
family were as much grieved by their loss as they were at the
serious property loss which they suffered.

Compendium of History Reminiscence & Biography of Western Nebraska
Chicago: Alden Publishing Company, 1909
http://www.rootsweb.com/~neresour/OLLibrary/cofhar/index.htm...

The BARR Family

BARR Family - Searching for information on the BARR family that lived in Delaware County, Iowa in the town of Hopkinton. They would have lived there sometime after 1907 until sometime in the 1950's. The father Albert Guy BARR was born in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, September 1885 and moved to hopkinton sometime after 1907 when he married Thora YARNALL, her middle name might be Grace. Albert Guy BARR died sometime in the 1950's and Thora YARNALL died between the late 1920's and the early 1930's. They had four sons, Colmer, Delbert, Norman, and Albert(also called Donald). Colmer and Delbert died drowning the same day at the ages of 8 and 9 years old. I do not know the date of birth or death of Colmer and Delbert, but I know it was before 1921 in Hopkinton. Norman and Albert (Donald) were both born in Hopkinton, Norman January 28, 1921 and Albert(Donald) february 12, 1928. I do not need any information on Norman or Albert(Donald), but I would like any information on the parents, Albert Guy BARR, Thora YARNALL, and the two sons Colmer BARR and Delbert BARR. Any information would be appreciated.

Gerald Barr
Colorado Springs, CO
Surname Welch, HELP!

Are there any Welch's left in Delaware Co. or the surrounding counties? If so, please let me know! This is why:
We have been at a brick wall for several years now!
John Welch and Bridget Hennessey Welch dropped out of the clear blue sky, into Delaware Co. IA about 1855.
We find them in the 1855 state census and there-after until 1880.
I have a copy of the bill of sale for the land they bought. I have John's last will & testament.(Jan 1871) I have Bridgets death certificate.
She died in Plymouth Co. as that is where my Grampa Edward settled.
So, there's plenty of that kind of info.
The census say they came from Ireland. Thats it! We don't know when, where or how they got here from Ireland. We think they met & married in New York (their daughter Ellen "thought" they were)!
I'd like to find WHERE in Ireland! I've posted messages in Ireland....no replies! And as I said, we don't know how they ended up in IA!
Their children were:
Edward (my grandfather, married Mary Pelroy)
Mary (married John Hynes)
Margaret (married Patrick Scanlan)
John (married Kate Doyle)
William (married Elizabeth Foley)
Ellen (married John Faust)
A very nice lady in Manchester researched her heart out for us many years ago. NOTHING!
Can someone help us crack this brick wall??!!!!
Thank you!
Desperate Deb !

I'm looking for a cemetery or other death date for a Jennie (Jane) M Stiles nee Toogood who can be found in the 1800 through 1930 Federal and Iowa State census records living in Manchester, Delaware County, Iowa. Per the 1900 census, she was born Nov 1870 -- most likely in Manchester, the daughter of Thomas Toogood and Laura A Peck. She married an Edmund Bruce Stiles about 1900.

Edmund B Stiles is buried in Oakland Cemetery -- who died on 7 Sep 1927. The WPA transcription for Oakland has his name as Edmand B Stiles -- but this must be Edmund Bruce Stiles. The same transcription does not include an entry for a Jennie or Jane Stiles. In the 1930 census, Jennie Stiles is living alone as a widow in Manchester.

I don't believe they had any children.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Regards,

...
1872 CASSEL Baby Born Out Of Wedlock In Colesburg

Looking for information on a CASSEL baby born out of wedlock to Alice Susan CASSEL in 1872 at the age of 14. At the time the CASSEL family lived in Mallory & Millville Townships in Clayton Co, Iowa. The baby was born in Colesburg in Delaware Co, Iowa.

FAMILY LEGEND (unsubstantiated)
Alice CASSEL, Forest Henry CASSEL WOOD's mother, was captured (adopted) by the Dakota/Sioux tribe. When she returned from capitivity, she had a baby ... Forest ... she was age 14. He was given to Eliza CASSEL WOOD (aunt) and her husband George WOOD to raise. They had migrated from Iowa up the Mississippi River to Eau Galle, Dunn Co, Wisconsin in 1870. Most native americans were removed from Iowa in 1848, probably disproving this family legend. However, it is believed to be true that Forest's father was native american and the real story is lost for now.

Because he was born out of wedlock Forest’s own children would still whisper this story 50 years after his death. We know that Forest returned to Iowa at least twice as an adult and he specifically listed Colesburg as his place of birth.
Looking for more information onthe Millett family who were listed in Delaware Co. 1880 census in several townships:

Hannah Millett (1816-1887) in Richland twp. with her son Rufus, and a niece Carrie.

Caleb Millett (1810-1887) in Delaware twp. with his wife and a daughter.

Hannah's husband Martin, who died in 1879. All three are buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Hoping to find obituaries for Caleb & Hannah, and Hannah & Martin's son Rufus (who died in 1923 & is also buried in Oak Hill Cemetery).

Believe that Martin may be my 3 gg grandfather's brother, but have had no firm proof of this. Hannah is listed in Martin's obituary as being a Millett by birth as well. Been trying to straighten this family out for the 7 years I've had a computer & been online.

Searching for the descendants of Jean (John) Windsor LeLacheur, a native of St Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands, who emigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada, with his family and then settled in Manchester, Delaware County, Iowa. His wife was Elizabeth Sencabaugh [Sensebaugh] also from a Guernsey family of Prince Edward Island. Children were William, Jane Windsor, Elizabeth Ruhamah, Windsor, Margaret Jane, and Elisha. I am aware of the children of Elisha who went to Nebraska, but I assume some of these children settled in Delaware County. Any info appreciated.

FLANNAGAN

I have an ancestor who was born in Ireland around 1815 named John Flannagan. He and his wife, Mary Kelly Flannagan, landed in New York on January 12, 1861 per his intention to become a citizen of the U.S.A. dated Feb. 12, 1861. His
declaration was filed to be a citizen in April 1864. I would love to find out where they came from in Ireland. He stated County Roscommon but I do not know the name of a town. They resided in the rural area of Delaware County, Iowa and I believe lived in Hazel Green Township. He died on July 10, 1880. Mary Kelly Flannagan his wife died on November 15, 1907. They are both buried in the Catholic
Cemetery in Castle Grove, Iowa which is located on the Monticello - Coggon Iowa road. I have attempted to find out if there was an obituary in the Manchester paper. No one can supply me with this information. I have not been able to
locate the whereabouts of the old issues of the paper. It is my understanding that the Federal Government has hired individuals to microfilm all old newspapers but no one in Iowa that I have contacted can supply me with any information. The church near the cemetery had a fire in 1920 and all records were destroyed. If you can direct me to any source that could fill me in with any information regarding this family I would be very happy. They supposedly had a son Michael Joseph Flannagan who was born in 1847 in Ireland and I know nothing else regarding this son. Their son, Patrick
Henry was born in 1852 in Ireland came to Iowa and married on April 15, 1877 a Margaret Britt at the Catholic Church in Delhi, Delaware County, Iowa. This couple is buried in Ryan, Iowa and it is my understanding that this church was destroyed by a wind storm several years ago.
Again thanks for anything you can offer.
Blanche Donovan, 16691 South 18th Way, Phoenix, AZ 85048, Telephone (602)460-2594 - FAX (602)460-2593

Looking for other researchers interested in these families.

The Bohnenkamp and Noethe families came to Delaware and Dubuque Counties in Iowa circa 1846 from Recklinghausen, Westfalia, Prussia. These two families are completely tangled (ie. a step-uncle marrying his teenage step-niece, etc...) and the LDS IGI entries are completely wrong! I'm in the process of sending in a corrected entry to Salt Lake.

The Bockenstedt, Klostermann, Vaske and related families originated in the Steinfeld, Parish Vechta, Oldenburg region of Germany.

These families all settled in Bremen & Colony Townships of Delaware County or across the boarder in New Vienna, New Wine Township of Dubuque County. For the most part, they attended church at St. Boniface in New Vienna or St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville.
Josephine Krogman, b. 15 January 1852 in Steinfeld, Oldenburg

I am searching for the parents of my ancestor Josephine Krogman. She was born 15 January 1852 in Steinfeld, Oldenburg and died 7 February 1914 in Dyersville, Dubuque, IA. She married William Woerdehoff on 20 April 1969 in Petersburg, Delaware, IA. He was born 20 January 1844 in Weiberg, Paderborn, Westphalia and died 23 March 1900 in Dyersville, Dubuque, IA. With him Josephine had thirteen children: Mary (1870-1955), Margaret (1872-1947), Catherine (1874-1935), Henry (1876-1934), Aloysius (1878-1902), Joseph (1880-1959), Anton (1882-1949), Rose (1884-1948), Andrew (1886-1974), Josephine (1890-1970), William (1891-1962), Frances (b. 1895), and Edmund (1899-1945).

Although I have ample documentation of William Woerdehoff's family, I have been unable to find any records of Josephine or the Krogmans. Does anyone have any information on this family? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Can someone look for the passing of a relative of mine please? Her name is Albena (or Allie for short) E. Luckusbitt. I know, quite the name! Her first husband was named Pratt, but he died in 1888. She remarried Jonathan Luckusbitt and they are living in Oneida, Delaware Co in 1900 (looks like he's a railroad worker). She is born 1856, he is born 1847. I cant seem to find them in the 1910 census, and with a name like that it should show up! Maybe they passed away between 1900 and 1910. Thank you so much for any help! Sincerely, Georgia

Also they have a daughter Anna listed as a survivor. Is she also buried at Petersburg? Does any one have access to the cemetery lists? I assume these dates are on their tombstones. K.

Looking for any information on the Francis Michael Sheeley family. Here is what I have so far:

Frank M. Sheeley Jr.- aka: Francis Michael Sheeley
b. 1899
m. Phyllis Madlyn Dahl
d. 1930 of Tuberculosis ... had one son who died as an infant in 1930 of TB, and a daughter, Dorothy Ann Sheeley who later moved to Des Moines, IA and married 1) Leon W. Sawyer and later 2) George L. Lewis

Parents of Frank M. Sheeley:

Frank M. Sheeley Sr. - aka: Francis Michael Sheeley
b. about 1875 in Iowa
m. Lena (b. New Hamphire) unknown last name
d. before 1900?? (cannot locate him in later census information)

Children: Frank, Marie, Lauretta, Lawrence, Mae, George

________________________________________________________
I believe Francis Michael Sheeley Sr. is the same as Michael F. Sheeley who appears in the 1880 census in Manchester, Delaware County, IA census ... age is about right. Later census information has him listed as born in IA, father b. NY, mother b. Can. If this is true, then his parents are:

Michael F. Sheeley - b. abt 1852 in New York, parents born in Ireland

married to Margaret - b. about 1857 in Canada, parents born in Ireland.

Children: Michael F. and M. Gertrude

________________________________________________________
Now, I believe this Michael F. Sheeley is the son of Martin Sheeley in the 1870 census, listed in Manchester, Delaware County, Iowa ...

Martin Sheeley ... b. abt 1815 in Ireland
married to Maggie b. abt 1826 in Ireland

children: John, Michael, Martin, and Thomas

If anyone has any information that could help me, corroborate or correct the information I have here, I would very much appreciate it! I am landlocked in Indianapolis, and cannot get to Iowa or New York or New Hampshire to check documents.

Thanks so much!

Marianne Spencer
Indianapolis, Indiana

According to a letter my grandmother wrote in 1940,

"Aunt Janette [NICHOLS] lived in Manchester, [Delaware County] Ia. for many years she lived there 27 years before my father went from Omaha to see her her name as Davis at that time she was married three times."
John Wesley NICHOLS, her brother, migrated to Omaha, Nebraska after his discharge from the military in the Civil War - about 1867.
I believe she was born in New York or Pennsylvania before 1840. Her parents, Samuel NICHOLS and Catherine MAXWELL (??) settled in Crawford County, Pennsylvania by the time the census was taken in 1840. Samuel died in 1847, and his widow remarried a man by the name of AMA / EIGHMEY. He is not listed with her in the 1850 census.

My name is Dan Pace and I am from Omaha, Ne. My great great grandfather lived in Delaware County. He was born in Leitrim County, Ireland in 1823. He married Margaret Drugan on Mar 17, 1848 and in the same year they came to the U.S. He died on Oct 23,1886 on his farm in Plum Creek, Ia. He is buried in Delhi. We found his grave, but could not find Margaret's. Her funeral was on 1/15/1919 at St Joseph's Church in Delhi.
Somewhere along the line we were told to look in St Paul's cemetery in Delhi, but could never find the cemetery.
We would greatly appreciate if you could give us any information about any of this family.
We are coming to Delaware County around June 15th or 16th. Hopefully you can give us more information before we get there.
I am searching for information on Leander Keyes. He is listed on the 1860 and 1870 census records living in Coffin's Grove. Along with that he is actually listed in the same home as Clement and Susan Coffin. In the 1860 census he is married to a woman named Corasa (that's what it looks like) and has a daughter. But in the 1870 census he is married to Susan C.W. Keyes and Susan Coffin is listed in the same household. Does anyone know of any connections here. I read one place about a letter he had written to Ray Griffin in 1865, and that he was married to Ray's sister. Any help would be appreciated.
Delaware Co., IA: I am trying to determine the death date and location for William Hahesy, Prairie Township, Dela. Co
He and his wife Bridget Houlahan Hahesy brought their six sons to the US (Boston?) ca. 1862-63, then to IA. Three of the sons are buried at St. Mary's Cem., Manchester, IA, one being my grandfather James Hahesy who married Johanna Penney.

William is believed to have been killed in a "logging accident" sometime between 1865 and 1870. Bridget is known to be buried at St. Patrick's Cem., Monti, IA (Buchanan Co.) William Hahesy is assumed to be buried with his wife. The priest there says there are no burial records. There are no gravestones. The cem. assoc. has a card with "Hasey" (sic) on it, plot #, but no burials or given name noted.

Wm. Hahesy appears on the 1865 census, but not on 1870's. I can find no death record, no newspaper obit (unavailable in Dela. and Buchanan Cos. for that period) no church or cem. information. To date I have been unable to find a passenger list with them on it.

There is an application for citizenship dated Oct. 1868 for a "William Hahessey" (sic) at Dela Co. Clerk's office, which may or may not be the Wm. Hahesy I seek. Kansas City states the only record is at the court of application (Dela. Co.)

I hope to visit Co. Waterford next spring and would like to know which parish to search. There are many Wm. Hahesy, Hahesay, Hahasy, Hahesseys in Griffith Valuation, and I'm hopeful of finding a parish name or townland from records here before going to Ireland.

ANY information will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

In reading your Delaware County history, it states "The first county seat was located at Eads' Grove. The town was named Elizabeth, in honor of Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett, the first woman settler of the county." Elizabeth H. BENNETT was my mother's great grandmother, and I thought Eads' Grove was named in her honor, as Eads' was her maiden name. Is this saying that there was another place named for her? Where was the town Elizabeth? And where was Eads' Grove. I know they were in Delaware Co. I am very interested in all the information I can get on William and Elizabeth BENNETT. Thanks

Looking for death of Hester (Ester) Mallory, 1870-1880

I am writing to request some assistance in locating the death of Hester [Ester] Mallory. Her and her husband, Charles, are enumerated in the 1860 and 1870 Federal Census for Delaware County, as follows:

1860 Federal Census for Greely, Elk Township, Delaware County, Iowa, page 20, Mallory, Charles, age 25, farmer, $400 real estate, $345 personal estate, born Ohio Mallory, Ester, age 27, born New York Mallory, Ira, age 3, born New York Mallory, Ida, age 1, born New York next door is Mallory, Patrick, age 57, Christian Clergyman, $1200 real estate, $610 personal estate, born New York Mallory, Eliza A., age 36, born New York

1870 Federal Census for Earlville, Elk Township, Delaware County, Iowa, page 13, June 29, 1870 Mallory, Charles, age 34, farmer, $2,250 real estate, $1,000 personal estate, born Ohio Mallory, Hester, age 36, keeping house, born New York Mallory, Ira, male, age 13, at home, born Iowa Mallory, Ida, female, age 10, born Iowa Mallory, Riley, male, age 9, born Iowa Mallory, Jennie, female, age 6, born Iowa Mallory, Rena, female, age 2, born Iowa Mallory, Lillie, female, age 1 month, born Iowa Mallory, James, male, age 17, farm laborer, born Iowa

I have not been able to find Charles and Hester in the 1880 Census, though there is a Charles Mallory (age 45) living in Pittsford Township, Butler County, Ohio, page 2, living with a Lucretia (age 30), and their two children, Myrtie (4), and Johnny (3). However, if Hester died before 1880 and Charles remarried, I would expect to see some of the other children living with him still in 1880, so I'm not sure if this is the same Charles Mallory.

I am hoping that you will be able to locate some information (perhaps a burial record?) for the death of Hester if she did die between 1870 and 1880. Her maiden name was Seeley, being the daughter of Jesse and Prudence (Brown) Seeley of Medina County, Ohio.

Please let me know if you are able to help.
