I have a 2 volume set of books, "History of Kossuth County, Iowa" by B.F.Reed, published in 1913. Volume 2 has family histories of early settlers and there is a good history of Absalom M. HUFFMAN. Here is a summary.
Absalom M. HUFFMAN
Absalom M. Huffman was born September 19, 1864 in Hardin County, Iowa, the son of Solomon and Sarah Ann (Baughman) Huffman. Solomon was a native of Coshocton county, Ohio and Sarah Ann was a native of Licking county, Ohio. Solomon was a lay preacher of the Methodist Episcopal denomination and a miner who went to California in 1860 and prospected for about 5 years, then moved to the east. In 1864 he moved his family to Hardin County, Iowa and bought land which he farmed for the remainder of his life. Solomon passed away on the Hardin County farm and Sarah Ann died in Wright county, Iowa.
After his father's death, Absalom assisted his mother with the farm operation until she passed away. He then worked out for a year. Everything he inherited on the old homestead was sold and in 1891 he went to Emmet county, Iowa and bought a half section of land in Denmark township in partnership with his brother Frank. Absalom farmed this land for 6 years then rented it out and moved to Jackson Creek township, Emmet county and leased a farm until 1898 when he moved to Kossuth County, Iowa. In 1897 he had purchased one hundred seven and one half acres of land in section 7 of Eagle township, Kossuth County. He has lived here since 1898 and has increased his holdings by 25 acres.
Absalom married Julia Crowley in 1893. She was the daughter of Daniel Crowley of Cascade, Iowa. Absalom and Julia Huffman had 4 children: Hazel May (born May 23, 1894), John (born 1895), William McKinley (born 1896) and a baby daughter, Grace, who died a week before the mother. Julia Huffman died December 25, 1999.
Absalom married Mrs. Frances Ada Edwards on January 1, 1901. Frances was the daughter of Francis Burr and Mary Elizabeth (Luscombe) Wakeman. Francis Wakeman was a native of Schenectady, New York and Mary Elizabeth was a native of England. Francis and Mary Elizabeth Wakeman have been residents of Hardin County for many years and live in Eldora. Francis is a carpenter and stair builder. He is a veteran of the Civil War and had gone to the front as a drummer boy in an Illinois regiment. Frances Ada was the oldest of five children: Frances Ada, Theresa Ida (Mrs. Fred D'Kay of Sioux City, Iowa), Lewis Burr of Eldora, Esther Estella (Mrs. Thomas Holmes of Laurel, Montana), and Ann Jennie of Lake Park, Iowa.
Absalom Huffman belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church of Eldora and is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Modern Woodmen of America of Armstrong. Absalom and Frances Ada belong to the Rebekahs and the Royal Neighbors. He is a socialist and served as school director in district No. 3 for 6 years and as township clerk for two. He is a director and stockholder in the Cooperative Creamery Company of Iowa Lake, Minnesota, and also of the Lake Road Telephone Company.
The end.
I hope this information helps you in your research. It appears that the family was living in Emmet county, Iowa when John was born.
