I would like to know if the mining companies in Mahaska County kept employee records and where I might find these? It would be for the late 1880’s and early 1900’s. The family lived in Garfield and Beacon Town.

Also, is there an online death index for the state of Iowa?
Thank you.

I am needing help with finding information about Matilda Gibson. I have her living in this county with her husband William Gibson and children in the 1885 state census, but then by the 1900 census she is living in Rock Island Illinois as Matilda Eastman.

I am trying to find if William Gibson died in this county and if she married again in this county. By the 1900 census she is a widow again, so I don't know the first name of the Eastman she married.

Also in the 1880 census she had a daughter Mary J Gibson living with them in Appanoose County, but in the 1885 census she is gone, hoping to find her marriage record also.

Couldn't find the family in 1870 to get full listing of children. Have so far
William Henry Gibson born 1861
Mary J Gibson born 1863
James L. Gibson born 1864
George M. Gibson born 1876
Rosie Gibson born 1878
Charles Gibson born 1883
In 1900 census Matilda said she had 10 children and 5 were still living, so missing lots of kids for this family.

Robert S. DICKERSON, his wife Laura Frances HALE DICKERSON, and family are listed in the 1880 Federal Census of Mahaska County, Iowa. Does anyone have information as to where this family lived prior to the 1880 census? Laura dies and is buried at unknown cemetery in Mahaska County. Robert and his family move to Wapello County as they appear in the 1900 Census for that County. In the 1910 census of Keokuk County, both John Henry Dickerson's family as well as Robert' family are listed. My father Glenn Arthur Dickerson is listed with the John Henry Dickerson family. Robert dies in Keokuk County in 1930 while living with his son John Henry Dickerson.
All the information we have is that he appears in 1880 and diews in 1930. The census lists his place of birth as Wisconsin. This has not been confirmed, nor has there been any data found on him from 1880 backwards to the time of his birth in May of 1844.

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION. Any and all information, regardless of how small, is welcomed. I would like to break through this brick wall and put this part of my genelogy to bed. Does anyone have a record of Laura Dickerson's place of buriel? Headstone inscription? Thanks in advance for any and all data you can provide.

How, Howe, Howse, Howes all cousins?

Hi Folks, in my genealogical search of my Thomas Howes 1580 - I have found mis-spelling by town and court clerks - many times in same document! Now, listen up!

I am Al Howes V.P. of the Howes Family Association and with 20th Gen. "Cuz" Paul Howes of Norfolk, England (found through DNA) have been working together over the past few months to plan a DNA project. The aims of the project are:

1 - to establish the English roots of Thomas Howes, who emigrated to America in 1637

2 - to help individual Howes, Howse,Howe,How family members break through brick walls in their research

3 - to bring together Howes families from around the world, and add to the sum of knowledge about our family

4 - to examine whether there are common roots between Howes, Howse and Howe families

We have just obtained a 50% discount voucher for DNA testing kits from a commercial service. Yes, that's half-off, but the vouchers are valid only until July 30, 2008. So you will need to make a quick decision to benefit from this special offer.

A few words about DNA testing: it's a simple swab, which you rub around your mouth for a few moments and then mail back. The supplier then sends you an email some weeks later with the URL to your test results. Those results

will be available to my English cousin Paul, and myself, as administrators of the site, but you will not have to disclose your identity to us. Once you have your own DNA test results, you can do your own searches on the suppliers and other sites to find matches. I can provide anyone interested with a lot more information on the usefulness of testing if desired.

If you are interested in using the discount voucher, please write to me off-list. I will send you more background on the project, DNA testing and the voucher ID. This is all volunteer, no money for us - only the testing company.

Many thanks in advance - Good Luck and Good Hunting
'Cuz' Al Howes, Co-Administrator Howes DNA Project
I am trying to find some information on this family in Mahaska Co.
They came to Iowa about 1855 and I have found several farms listed on the Plat maps shown on the Mahaska site.

Daniel Whitsel came to Ia. from Jackson Co. Ohio. I am sure they didn't travel there alone so there has to be more families from that area in Ohio who all came together.

There were several son and Daughters. They show up in all the census records starting in 1860 in Des Moines Twp.

Are there any researcher out there with any connection to Daniel, Benton, Hiram, Whitsel, Whitsell, Whetsel ?

One daughter married a Harris, one a Ellis, another a Chilton, another Barnett, Bucher.
Thanks Susie in Ohio
Where can I find any records online to check marriages, death, births??
Looking for any information about the AHRWEILERs of Oskaloosa and Mahaska County, IA: Charles AHRWEILER, Sr., son of Carl Herman AHRWEILER, grandson of August AHRWEILER. Charles' wife was Marjorie E. FRITZ, youngest daughter of George A. FRITZ. Charles' mother was Anna K. GEGNER, daughter of John W. GEGNER. The Ahrweilers were Mahaska County coal mine operators up until about 1930. Thereafter, Charles was involved in many enterprises, including a number of farms, a grocery store, and later a successful real estate and insurance brokerage. His home and office was at 215 A. Avenue East, at the present location of a pizza shop. Charles' son, Charles Jr., was a 1950 graduate of Osky High and worked for Iowa Power and Light. All of the above named persons are now deceased. Any and all anecdotes or other small bits of information from anyone who knew the Ahrweilers or anything about them will be welcome. [email address updated June 2000.

Dr. Charles E. Wallace b. 1858 in Lawrence Co., PA went to Mahaska Co., Iowa about 1885 and settled in New Sharon by 1895. He practiced there at least 30 + years. He was still living at the time of the 1930 census. I believe I can trace him back to his parents John S. and Nancy Kelty Wallace. In Ancestry Family Tree someone listed him as married to an Esther Jackson. His parents were listed as John Wallace and Nancy Kelly. He was 72 yr. in 1930. Can anyone that has access to cemetery records for this area or access to any other records help me with his death date. He also had two children, Helen Wallace b. 1893 and Donald b. 1897. Thank YOU for taking the time to read this and hopefully respond.
Marilyn Dicks
Seeking someone who will do a look-up for me. I am looking for a probate record of John NEWTON. I have the book number but the records that I have start with page 17. I was wondering if some one would find the first page/pages of this record. The book is Mahaska county Probate Records - Volume E 1865-1866. I have page 17 and page 500 of VOL F -I have page 350 and Gardian Index, v.1. I would really appreciate the first pages of Volume E. Thanks for you time and effort.
I am researching the family of my great grandmother Margaret Burdock. I believe she was one of eleven children, eight of which reached adulthood, 5 boys and 3 girls.
The girls all married but all 5 boys went to America, George in 1868, Richard and Joseph and their families in 1869, William and family in 1878 and Charles in 1887 after the death of his mother in1886.
All of them except George, ended up in Iowa. I can only find the one mention of George in Maryland at the same time as Joseph and Richard were there.
Does anyone in Iowa know of this family ? I have some factual information from census', but as I live in the county of Kent in the UK I am trying to get a feel for the US side of the family.

From an Iowa census I was able to obtain his wife's name: Lydia A WALGAMOOD. They supposedly married in Illinois. Their children were: John Rochford CARLIN (1891), Anna CARLIN (1893), Thomas H. CARLIN Jr. (1894), Theresa W CARLIN (1897) all born in Mahaska County.

I think that the son, John Rochford, died in MA, but have no info on any of the other family members.

Does anyone know when Thomas H Sr died? Does anyone have any information on this family at all?

Thank you!

I'm searching for family of a Harker Lavy Lee (called Harky) b. ca 1850 KY, d. 11/4/1882 IN; m. Henry Clay Green, Marion Co. IN 6/24/1866. Her father was a William Lee who moved west sometime after Harker's marriage and before 1880. Harker had a brother David who apparently predeceased her. David also moved west, possibly to IA. Any information on this family is appreciated as I know little about them. I have some unidentified photos I believe to be Lees. Please contact me at clga@earthlink.net.

Looking for info on my husbands side of the family. his name is Timothy Francis Dean Hare b. june 6, 1967 Otumwa, Iowa born to Almon Junior Hare b.Dec. 10, 1940 ( ??on the year) and Shirley Marie Smith b. june 7, 1941(??on the year). I believe Almons father was Arthur Almon Hare or Almon Hare aka Athur and his mothers last name is Stockdall, which I am not clear on the spelling. It is said that the mother(stockdall) died early, when Almon Junior Hare was a boy. Tims dad remembers something about his dad owning a jewlery store in Oskaloosa. He also remembers something about getting his picture taken by a newspaper. We believe he (Aurthur) would've owned the jewlery store in the 1940's. Junior remembers being about 8 years old when this picture was taken. The only other thing I know is Junior & his dad lived in Sonora, Texas when his dad, Arthur died. Junior was about 11 yrs old. He was then sent back to Iowa on a train to live with either family members or friends of family members. I don't have a lot to go on & what I do seems confusing. My father-in-law is a truck driver. He is gone alot. I will try to get with him soon & see if I can get any clearer info than this. thank you. Shauna Hare

POW/MIA Korean War, Mahaska Co. WATTERS

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Mahaska County, Iowa as his home of record.

Soldier: CECIL HOWARD WATTERS
Born: Jan. 20, 1927. Caucasian
Date of loss: November 29, 1050. KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 34 families in Iowa that have not been located. There is one family from Mahaska County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Marriage record for McCance

Hi! I'm looking for a marriage record for the following couple:

Robert B. McCance m Amazette (___)
abt 1877

I don't know for a fact that they were married in Mahaska Co., but Robert was living in Mahaska Co. with his grandparents (John Baker and 2nd wife Hiley) in 1860; he is found in Mahaska again in 1870 (uncle Madison Baker is 2 households away). In 1880 he is in Mahaska Co., with wife Amazette (same in 1900 and 1905). According to census data they were married abt 1877.

Are there any indices available for this time period? The latest I found on the Mahaska Co. gen web site was 1865.

Thanks for any help -- I really appreciate it! I'm busting through a brick wall with the McCance family and excited to get this far!!
