Hi, I was born in Emmettsburg, Palo Alto County, in 1932, in a house across the street from the convent, and am the Great Granddaughter of Jack and Etta Livingston. Their daughter, Blanch married Perry Wilson. They lived in Milford Iowa. Perry and Blanch had ten children, one of them my mother Florence who married Vearl Miller from Dumont, Iowa. Blanch had a sister Emma who in later life lived with her. I have been trying to locate these Livingstons and was told they were from Ruthven area of Palo Alto County. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Belva
I am looking for Toreson brothers (I believe) from Norway. Runte born 1824, Knut born 1825, Simon born 1828, Lars (Larse) born 1843, in Norway. All show on census in Palo Alto County , Iowa 1880. Particularly interested in Runte whose son was Charles ( maybe C.K. Toreson) born 1871 in Wisconsin. All this is census information and sometimes difficult to put the families together. I believe Charles' daughter is Emma Marie born 1899 in Lost Island Township, Palo Alto County, Iowa. Emma Marie Toreson married Dwight Kooker. They were my grandparents.

Charles and Emma seem to have no records.

I woiuld appreciate any information.

Chery

I found a wonderful family picture labeled "Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Guida & Family". Someone's written on the back "March 9, 1912". The members of the family are also labeled: Floyd, Wm. ((Father)), Arthur, Ruby, Frank, Irvin, Mary ((Mother)), Robert.

VERY preliminary research indicates that this Guida family was in Palo Alto County, IA, and may have later moved to MN. I found the picture in a bin in a store in Iowa.

I am not researching the family, but it was a great picture I thought someone might appreciate. I would be happy to send a copy. I can be reached at debbiall at yahoo dot com.

Looking for information on John W/Wesley Virgil and Elizabeth (Kelly) Virgil and their son, James Henry Virgil, and his wife, Mary/Molly. Eliabeth died in 1921, James in 1964 and Mary/Molly in 1942, and they are all buried at Calvary Cemetery in Ayrshire. John died between 1938 and 1950. There is a place for him at Calvary but no separate stone. Looking for any information on this family, especially biographries, obituaries, birth, death and marriage records. In the 1920 census they were in Clay County, but in 1905, 1910, 1925 and 1930 they were in Palo Alto County, sometimes in Booth Twp and sometimes in Silver Lake Township.

Other Virgil families lived in Palo Alto County also and I'd be interested in information on any of them as well. I have access to all the census records.

Thank you. Sandra

I was wondering if any one could get a picture for me at cavalry cemetary. I am interested in a picture of my gg grandparents grave. Mary and Patrick Maguire. Marys dob is 1862 and death 10-18-1901, Patrick's dob is 1-22-1830 and death is 12-14-1912. I have no idea where they are located and am not even sure how big this cemetary is. I would be extremely grateful if any one could help.

He immigrated to this country when a youth and settled in Palo Alto county. He worked in Emmetsburg for a number of years and then purchased a farm in Independence township where he lived for the remainder of his life. The last few years of his life were spent with Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hanson who cared for him during his illness.

Mr. Gappa was well and fovorably known in this community for his honesty, true Christian spirit, and thoughtfulness for his fellow man. His affable personality won for him a host of friends who mourn his passing.

In his illness, Mr. Gappa was cheerful and without complaint. A large crowd of friends paid their last respects to him Saturday morning when his funeral services were conducted in Whittemore. The pall bearers were: Pat Jackman, Pat Nolan and John Gappa, Emmetsburg; Joe Kleigl, Odd Teeter and Fred Domek, Cylinder.

Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were:
Mrs. Ann Gappa and son, Cletus of Medelia, Minn.
Herman Gappa of Hollandale,
John Gappa of Buffalo Center,
Mrs. John Gappa, Sr., of Northfield, Minn.,
Mr. and Mrs. John Haag of Thompson, Iowa,
Mr. and Mrs.C.
Ida (Whitney) Higley, b. May 2, 1854 - d. July 31, 1928.

THE PALO ALTO TRIBUNE. August 1928. "PALO ALTO COUNTY OLD TIME RESIDENT CALLED. Dies After Short Illness At the LKAge of 83 years."-- Mrs. Ida Higley died at her home in this city at 7:30 Tuesday evening, July 31. Her heart had been weak for a long time, and for several weeks her condition was not good. At one time, a few weeks ago her physicians feared that she could not recover, but she rallied and seemed quite well again. The end came peacefully.

Funeral services will be held at the home at 1:30 and at the M. E. church here at 2 o'clock Friday. Rev. M. L. Sundermin will officiate. The burial will be at Whittemore.

Miss Ida Whitney was born in Illinois May 2, 1845, hence was over 74 years of age. She came to Iowa in her earlier years and united in marriage with John Higley at Algona May 5, 1873. Shortly after they came to Palo Alto county and located on a farm in Fairfield township where they resided until 1915 when they retired and came to Emmetsburg and established their home. Mr. Higley died about seven years ago.

Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Higley. A daughter, May, died thirty years ago. A son, Vincent, of Mason City died about six months ago. The other children, three sons and seven daughters survive their mother. The sons are Harvey of Fairville, Sidney of Mason City and Jack Higley of this city. The daughters are Mrs. M. L. McEnroe of Algona, Mrs. Theo Elbert of Whittemore, Mrs. Jos. Yanke of Mason City, Mrs. John Schumacher of Bancroft, Mrs. H. Gmelin of Mason City, Mrs. W. F. Kelly of Whittemore and Mrs. F. E. Brennan of this city.

Mrs. HIgley was well known and highly respected. She was most devoted to her home and family and there was no sacrifice too great for her to make to provide her children with all comforts and the best of everything the times afforded when they were young. Her solicitude for them never waned. Although they had all grown to manhood and womanhood and all were married, she kept each one close to her heart and motherlike, she never failed to be with the one who in illness of misfortune needed her.

She was thoughtful, companionable and courteous hence was popular with her associates. In church and social circles she was popular.

She was a member of the Methodist church. She was sincere in her belief and constant in her religious practices. She had many warm friends who will miss her. She was a good neighbor, charitable in word and deed.

Her life was well spent and she had no fear of meeting her Master. The greatest sorrow will, of course, come to the children who survive. To them, the Tribune extends sincere sympathy.

N.B.: Harvey T. Higley (1877 - 1937), the son named above, married Catherine Gappa (1882 - 1938), who was the daughter of Frank and Faustina (Kajewski) Gappa. "Kate" (Gappa)Higley was the oldest sister of Frank Gappa who was the father of Marguerite (Gappa) Dale, wife of Dick Dale, longtime member of the Lawrence Welk orchestra. Dick Dale, whether playing in the orchestra, singing solos, performing as a member of a small ensemble, dancing, always showed amazing musical timing and accuracy. No wander he remained employed for such a long time!.--Walter Farwell.

Funeral Held in Whittemore This Morning".-- Word was received here Sunday of the sudden death of Matt Gappa at his home in Dubuque the day previous. He fell down the cellar stairs at his home and received injuries which casued his death. He had started down the stairs leading to the basement and slipped and fell to the bottom. Some ten years ago he suffered a stroke of apoplexy and it is thought that he might have had another stroke at this time which caused him to fall. Members of his family, who were in the house at the time, heard him gasp and then fall down the stairs. They rushed to his assistance and found him bleeding profusely from a deep scalp wound. An ambulance was called and Mr. Gappa was rushed to Mercy hospital where an examination revealed a bad fracture of the skull, and he died without regaining consciousness. The accident happened shortly before noon and at 2:30 he passed away.

Mr. Gappa was born in Germany on February 24, 1842, coming to the United States when twenty one years old. He lived for a short time in Philadelphia and then came west to Kossuth county. It was in this county, forty-four years ago, that he was united in marriage to Katherine Brass of the Irvington neighborhood. They later moved to the Fairville neighborhood where Mr. Gappa bought a farm. They lived there until eight years ago when they gave up active farm life and moved to Emmetsburg. They moved to Dubuque last May and have since made that place their home.

Beside his wife, Mr. Gappa is survived by nine children. They are Sadie Gappa who lives at home, Mrs. Fred Gremmels of Dubuque, Mrs. G.H. Darrow of Farmersburg, Iowa, Mrs. Oliver Blightan of Cylinder, Mrs. Oscar Root of Ruthven, Isadore and George of Ray, Minnesota, Matt Gappa of Emmetsburg, and John Gappa of Brushville, Minnesota.

Frank Gappa, who lives northwest of Whittemore is a brother of the deceased and John Gappa is a cousin. Another brother, Gregory, lives at El Reno, Oklahoma.

Mr. Gappa was one of the highly respected early settlers in this part of Iowa and was well and favorably known. The remains were brought to Whittemore yesterday morning and funeral services are to be held this morning at St. Michael's Catholic church, burial to be made in the cemetery north of town.

The family has the sympathy of their many friends in their hour of trouble.

N.B.: The "Frank Gappa" who lived northwest of Whittemore in 1918, died on May 5, 1932, and was the husband of Faustina (Kajewski) Gappa. Faustina (Kajewski) Gappa's obituary said that Faustina's sister had married Gregory Gappa of El Reno, Oklahoma....SO....We know that Frank, Matt and Gregory were brothers and we know that Frank's wife and Gregory's wife were sisters!

The John Gappa who was his cousin died in September 1931. When Jacob Gappa died in January 1938, his obituary said this John Gappa was a brother of Jacob.

Peter Gappa who had died on April 27, 1909 was a son of Matt Gappa.--Walter Farwell

WHITTEMORE CHAMPION. April 29, 1908. "Peter F. Gappa Dead".-- Tuesday morning Mr. and Mrs. Matt Gappa, of this city, were called upon to mourn the death of their son Peter F., who had been very ill for a month or more. Some time during the winter he was driving, and his team got stuck in a snow drift. He was alone and he carried the wagon box out of the snow. It is thought that he sprained himself internally in doing so. Subsequently he became ill and gradually failed. Ten or twelve days ago he underwent an opertion for appendicitis but he never fully recovered from the effects of his injury.

The deceased was born in Fairfield township March 8, 1889 (sic). Hence he was 20 years of age. His parents moved to Emmetsburg last fall. He was a hearty, vigorous, strong, industrious young man and he had, to all appearances, a bright and a successful future awaiting him. He was a young man of good habits and he enjoyed the friendship and the confidence of a large circle of friends and neighbors who knew him from childhood. His death, at such an early age, is a sad blow to his aged parents and to his other relatives. All have the sympathy of our citizens in their sorrows.--Emmetsburg Democrat.

The remains were brought to Whittemore today and laid to rest in the Catholic cemtery.

N.B.: I believe that the date of his birth is incorrect. I think it should have been March 8, 1883. His next older brother Matthew had been born on October 9, 1881. His next younger brother John J. was born June 26, 1884.--Walter Farwell

WHITTEMORE COMPANION. January 16, 1929. "FUNERAL FOR MR. KAJEWSKI. Former Fairfield Township Farmer Buried in Whittemore Friday".--Funeral services for Anthony Kajewski, Sr., mention of whose death was made in these columns last week, were held Friday morning at St. Michael's Catholic church, the Rev. Father C. P. Sweeney officiating. Burial was made in the Catholic cemtery, north of Whittemore.

Mr. Kajewski was born in West Prussia, Germany, April 30, 1862, being thus nearly 67 years of age at the time of his death. He came to America in April, 1881, coming west to Kossuth county, in the vicinity of St. Joe. He remained there for some time, being employed upon farms, and it was there that he was united in marriage to Rose Ann Devine, who preceded him in death. The young people later moved to Fairfield township to make the family home for a long term of years. Mr. Kajewski had been in failing health for some time past. He was a kindly Christian gentleman, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

As stated last week, he is survived by six sons, Enis, John Anthony, Frank, Edward and Joseph. The one daughter, Mrs. Harvey Oliver, died a few years ago. He is also survived by one brother, Ignatius Kajewski, of West Point, Nebraska; and two sisters, Mrs. Gregory Gappa, of El Reno, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Frank Gappa, of Whittemore.

Among those from out of town who came to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ed. McDonough, Harvey Oliver and Miss Irene Oliver, of Waseca, Minnesota. Numerous friends of the family and relatives from St. Joe and Livermore were also present.

N.B.: His sister, Mrs. Frank (Faustina) Gappa, was the grandmother of Mrs. Dick Dale, nee Margaret Gappa. Dick Dale has been seen on television for over 50 years every Saturday night as a musician in the Lawrence Welk orchestra.--Walter Farwell

THE EMMETSBURG DEMOCRAT. March 24, 1932. "MRS. FRANK GAPPA, WHITTEMORE, DEAD. Mother of Eleven Sons and Daughters. Spent Nearly a Half Century in Fairfield Township".-- Mrs. Frank Gappa, long a resident of Fairfield township, passed away at her home at Whittemore Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock. She became ill the previous Tuesday. The funeral was held yesterday. Services were conducted in St. Michael's Catholic church at 9 o'clock. The pastor, Rev. Wm. Veit, officiated. The interment was in the parochial cemetery at that place. There was a large attendance of relatives, old neighbors and friends at the obsequires.

Faustina Kajewski was born in West Prussia, Germany, January 25, 1859. Hence she was 73 years of age. When a young girl she came to America with her parents, who located on a farm in Fairfield township, this county. She was married September 25, 1881, to Frank Gappa. Mr. and Mrs. Gappa resided on their farm in Fairfield township following their marriage until 1925, when they retired and moved to Whittemore. Mr. and Mrs. Gappa intended celebrating their golden wedding anniversary last September but were unable to do so because of the illness of Mr. Gappa, who is still bedfast.

Eleven sons and daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gappa. One son, Ignatius, died in August 1931. The surviving members are Mrs. Harve Higley, Mrs. Frank Domek, Theodore and Tony Gappa, all of Cylinder; Andrew of Graettinger; Mrs. F. C Bailey and Mrs. A. H. Krause, both of Fenton; and Mrs. Thomas Ford, Frank Jr., and Miss Mary, all of Whittemore. Her death is also mourned by one brother, Ignatius Kajewski of West Point, Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs. Gregory Gappa of El Reno, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Gappa stood for the highest interests of home life in the community in which she spent nearly 50 years of her long and edifying life. She never lost sight of the special duty she owed as a mother and as a Christian exemplar to her large family of 11 sons and daughters. They profitted by her zeal and her true earnestness and are taking their places as useful citizens in the various industrial, social and religious activities in which they are applying themselves. Mrs. Gappa's trials and labors were greatly increased since the commencement of her husband's long and lingering illness and it is sad that she was called from his bedside when her loving care and attention were most needed. General and heartfelt sympathy goes out to Mr. Gappa and the members of his family in their present hours of sorrow.

N.B.: Mrs. Frank Gappa's granddaughter, Marguerite (Gappa) Dale, is the wife of Dick Dale, who for more than 50 years has been seen on the Lawrence Welk Saturday night television show on Iowa Public Television. Dick Dale joined Welk on Feb. 9, 1951; only Barney Liddell and Myron Floren could claim longer tenures with the Welk orchestra......Strangely, I cannot remember seeing Mrs. Dale and their four children, on the Welk Christmas show. Maybe, Mr. Welk did not want to chance the possibility of the Dale children recognizing their father as the Santa Claus?--Walter Farwell

I am Peter Crowley Mulroney and J. P. Crowley is my paternal great grandfather, and married into the White family (his wife Mary E.) which originally settled in Damariscotta Maine. Other White surnames of interest back in Maine are Powers, Furlong and Redmore. The fact that JP had 4 daughters (and one son who did not live to adult hood) expired the Crowley name on this line.

Can I find Janet's birth details?
Anyone seeking these names?

Thanks for your help and suggestions.........
Best to all from Canada,
Judy

McKee Clan

I have a cousin who married Kenneth McKee, son of Luman A. and Gertrude (Goff) McKee. Kenneth passed away this past week and I started researching his lineage. So far, I have found what I believe to be his grandparents: Dalton Hubbard McKee and Susan Ellen Gilliam. According to census records, Dalton and Susan had the following children: Carrie (step child) b. abt 1870, George H (May 1877), and Luman A. (Jun 1882).

Here are the locations of the census records I found on Dalton:
1880 - IA - Liberty Twp, Jefferson County, Iowa - page 445b
1900 - IA - Nevada, Palo Alto County, Iowa - 7a
1910 - IA - Lake Twp, Clay County, Iowa - 183a
1930 - Twp 2, Merced County, California - 146b

In addition, here are the locations for the census records I found on George H. McKee:
1880 - same
1900 - same
1910 - Highland Twp, Palo Alto County, Iowa - page 86a
1930 - Twp 2, Merced County, California - 146b

In addition, I have found Luman only on the 1920 census records in Eau Claire, Wisconsin - page 1a

.... anyone that has additional information, I would greatly appreciate some assistance. My cousin Nita is 85 and I would like to provide to her and her children Kenneth's family picture.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Hi listers. I am trying to find the brother of my ggg grandfather. His name was Gustav or August Koenk and settled in the Emmetsburg area. I cannot find him listed on census records and am dying to find out any information about him and/or his family. My ggg grandfather was Charles Koenck, who settled in Crawford County, Iowa, and another brother, Otto Koehnk, came over and settled in the Everly, Iowa, area. The three brothers came over at different times, hence the three spellings of the name. I would greatly appreciate any information anyone can give me. Thank you!

I am searching for my great-grandfather James Higgins. He was married to Elizabeth A born about 1842. They had Mary F (born 1864), Katie M (born 1866)-she is my greatgrandmother, Thomas W (born 1869), Patrick H (born 1872), and James J (born 1874).

I believe that James died between 1874 and 1880 as in the 1880 census, Elizabeth A is remarried to E Pinto and there is another child - Dolly Pinto 4/12. In the 1880 census, they are living in Emmetsburg, Palo Alto County, Iowa. I have not had time to look through the 1870 census as yet so I am not sure where they were prior to 1880. I have look through as many Palo Alto cemeteries that are published but have not found him as yet.

Any information is appreciated.
the MYERS family of Emmetsburg

I was wondering if anyone has any information on the Albert Peter (A.P.) and Rachael Wagner Myers family. A.P. was born 1861 in Wisconsin, and his wife was born Nov 1871 in Iowa, probably P.A. county. They married in 1889 and had 12 kids between the years 1890 and 1915.

My great-grandmother was Rose Ellen Myers Nitchals, b. 03 Feb 1893 and died 22 Apr 1922. She died of pneumonia, and left behind 4 kids, aged 2, 3, 4, and 5. If anyone has access to her marriage certificate to Louis Aaron Nitchals, I believe they were married at the Catholic church in Emmetsburg in late 1915 or early 1916.

Thank you so much!
