I also have a great aunt who was said to own a brothel in Iowa...I am not sure if it is south bottoms although that is where my mom was raised, or if it was in Sioux City.
From what I am told the brothel or "Hotel" was called La Salle or La Selle...it was a resturant on the bottom floor and a house of pleasure on the top floor. My great aunts name was Gloria Hoover. I am not sure what her last name was when she had the hotel...do you think it is the same place or people????
I didn't mean to give the impression I'm related to the McCarthy's. My great-grandfather was married to her but they did not have any children. She is buried in the family plot & I became curious about her after seeing her grave the last time I was there. Thank you though for your willingness to share what info you have.

Joseph F. Byers
Joseph F. Byers was born at Galena, Illinois, September 18, 1854. He lived in his native town until a young man when he came to Delaware county, Iowa. After a brief residence there he moved to Belmond, Iowa, where he learned the harness maker’s trade with his brother John P. byers, who is still a resident of Belmond.
About the year 1878 he came to Alden and engaged in the harness business which he conducted for twenty-five years, during which time he was one of the well known and popular business men of the town.
Ten years ago Mr. Byers disposed of his business here and for a few years following he was employed as traveling salesman. Later he had the management of the harness department of a large store in South Dakota. He then moved to Oto, Iowa where he engaged in business for himself and where he lived until his death which occurred May 14, 1913.
About a year ago he suffered a stroke of apoplexy, since which time he had been in poor health. This trouble, complicated with an aggravated case of asthma, cased his death.
He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, with which institution he had long been identified.
He is survived by a son, Frank O., of Cedar Rapids; a brother, John P., of Belmond and a sister, Mrs. Kahl of Fort Worth, Texas.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.G. Muhleman at the Alden Methodist church Saturday morning, and internment was made in the Alden Cemetery.
---Alden Times, Alden, Iowa, May 23, 1913, page 1
I found them in a 1940 census, althou the first names of the girls are different. Looks like Alma married a Frank J Strong b. 1886 iowa in sioux city. The daughters have him listed as step father, and 1 of the daughtes in this 1940 census Adeline Riley has Alma Dinnsen and Thomas Riley listed as her parents when she died in los angeles in 1985.

Her birthday is 1920 same as anna riley. So not sure if duplicate or twins?

Mildred Riley is listef in the 1940 census and has the same birthday 1917 as elizabeth riley. So again either twins, or different names on census.
Lookup for Mary Frances Kindel-death date and obit

I am looking for the death date and possible obit of Mary Frances (Shepardson) Kindel. She died in 1948 (b Jan 1859 Johnson Co. IA). Her husband was Samuel I Kindel (b 14 May 1852 d 17 Jun 1930). Both are buried at Oak Hill Cemetary in Anthon Iowa. Her headstone only has the date of 1948. I do have a copy of Samuel's obit from the Anthon Herald in 1930. Thank you for any information. Update: I wrote to the Methodist Church in Anthon and she was not active in that chuch in 1940; the records note she moved to Chicago. However, the 1940 census has her living with daughter Gertrude in Holstein IA. Also in 1947 her son died and in his obit it lists Mary Kindel of Anthon as a survivor.

Since there are only THREE records at Ancestry.com with the surname Mesheir (two of which are Anna's children) I'm guessing that the name was mis-transcribed.

Do you know where and when Anna died? An obit or death record could reveal her maiden name...That would help in tracking down a marriage record.

Yes, thank you. That is my findagrave memorial for Baltus and family. I am specifically looking for an obit in the Sioux Valley News, from Anthon Iowa. It appears he was visiting his daughters in Pueblo, Colorado when he died and as the newspaper states his body was transported back to Anthon, Iowa for burial. The family lived in Pierson, Woodbury, Iowa for many years and I was hoping there would be an obit in the Sioux Valley News.

Newspaper Archive does not cover the years I require nor does Ancestry.com and I have not received a reply to my inquiries from the Anthon Library. I was hoping for a look-up. Thank you. Patti Turchinetz

A puzzle for all you genealogists out there.

Jessie Elva McDonald was my Grandfathers second wife. He was Raleigh Job.

S.S. records her death as Jessie Job, Jan. 1982, and shows her birth as Jan. 23, 1890. I show that she was born in 1886.

In 1880, Milam Co. TX, there lived a family of D. McDonald, 34, b. TX, wife, S.C., 26, b. Miss., J.M., son, 8, L.G., 5, daug., D. son, 3, and unnamed son, 1/12. Also there was B.B. Cooley, 22, who was a brother to S.C., although it didn't say that, the maiden name of Sophronia McDonald was Cooley.

In 1900, Milam Co. TX, they were Daniel, 54, b. 1846, TX, Married for 29 years, wife Sophronia, 46, b. 1853, Miss., 10 children living of 12 born to her., Roy, son, 20, Jerry, son 18, Arthur and Luther, twin sons, b. 1884, Jessie E., SON, MALE, b. Jan 1886, 14,Charles D., son, b. 1889, and Cora E., b. 1893.

Q. Is there any record to be had that shows this person b. either in Jan. 1886 or 1890, and whether male or female?

In 1900, Milam Co. TX, there were Ruben Holbert, wife Bettie, and sons, Ben, 28, b. TX, Ivy, 19, b. TX, and Wiley, 15, b. TX.

In 1902, Jessie married Ivy Holbert.

Q. Would this marriage record show parents names? Birth dates or ages?

About 1904 Jessie and Ivy had a daughter, Minnie.

Q. If this birth record is available, would it show ages of the parents?

In 1910, Milam Co. TX, listed were Sophronia McDonald, widow, 56, Luther, 26, Charley, 20, and Cora, 18. Also there was a Granddaughter, Minnie Holbert, 6.

I cannot find Jessie in the 1910 census anywhere.

Sometime between the conception of Minnie Holbert, ~1904, and the second marriage of Ivy Holbert, ~1908-1909, apparently Ivy and Jessie were seperated, probably by divorce.

Q. Is there a record of this divorce?

In 1910, Woodbury Co. IA, were I. L. Holbert, 29, and wife Ethel, 19, who had been married for one year. (1908-1909).

Q. Is there a record of this marriage in either IA or TX?

There is a photo of Jessie existing that shows on the back the notation, Mrs. Boyd, 1914, Alto TX, (in Cherokee Co.). Looks like she re-married to a Mr. Boyd.

Q. Any record of this marriage of either a Jessie McDonald or Jessie Holbert to a Mr. Boyd in either Milam or Cherokee Co. TX?

In 1920, Ivey and Ethel and 2 children are in Dakota Co. NE, in 1930, in NE, as Halbert, and in 1940, in NE as Ivan, with no Ethel.

In 1940 Jessie is listed as wife of Raleigh Job, living in Chicago.

On July 11, 1941, in Putnam Co. IN, Raleigh Job is married to Jessie.

I found in 1920, in Palo Pinto Co. TX, a J. E. Boyd, 33, b. TX, as the wife of G. W. Boyd, 47, with L. B. Boyd, daughter, 13, W. M. Boyd, daughter, L. L. Boyd, 7, son, H. D., 5, son, and W. A., 2, son.

Q. Could this be Jessie re-married to a Boyd ~1906-1907?

Q. Would there be a marriage license of that marriage in either Milam, Cherokee or Palo Pinto Co?

In 1930 this couple was in Wise Co. TX, and the Names were George, 55, and Alice J., (possible mis-written Elva?) 44. They had sons Luther, 18, H. D., 15, Everett, 5, and a daughter Viola, 9. There was a granddaughter, Marie Extell, 5, b. TX also.

Anxious to get the answer to any of these questions. Thanks, Paul
Henry Martin RATHJEN married Margaret Mary BARLOW sometime between 1920 and 1925 - probably more likely between 1920 and 1923. Margaret's maiden name was DEVINE. Both Henry and Margaret lived in Sioux City before and after their marriage, so I think that they might have been married there. One other surname is associated with Margaret - HEINL, but that was from a marriage before BARLOW. I will appreciate any kind soul that can assist me with this marriage information.

Hi, this postcard was sent out of Hawarden in 1907 and I am interested to know if it could have been taken in Sioux City or other nearby town. It appears to be a main street and some of the shop names are visible, but I was unsuccessful in linking it to any area location. Thanks for your help in advance!

Timothy COUGHLIN obit

Sioux City Journal (IA) - June 12, 2006

Deceased Name: Timothy K. Coughlin

DAKOTA CITY -- Timothy K. Coughlin, 63, of Dakota City passed away Thursday, June 8, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital, following a five-year illness.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Mr. Coughlin has been cremated, and burial of the ashes will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.
Tim was born on Sept. 17, 1942, in Alta, Iowa, the son of James R. and Dorothy J. (Knowles) Coughlin. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School in 1961. He attended Idaho State College and Wayne State College and graduated from Briar Cliff College.
He married Carolyn J. Sanem on Dec. 29, 1962, at St. Boniface Church in Sioux City. Tim was employed as a teacher for the McCook Lake School, then became a counselor for Mid-Step Services and for 17 years, he was a director of the South Sioux City Community Center. His years of service and commitment were for those less fortunate and was an advocate for those who had little or no voice. He had lived in Dakota City for the last 30 years.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. He was interested in horse racing, golf, traveling, reading, good conversation and story telling. He also had an interest in politics and watched the Nebraska Unicameral on Nebraska Public T.V. daily. He also listened to Air America and other programs on satellite radio. But most of all, he was a loving, proud and active husband, father and grandfather, known to his family as wacko silly papa. Tim's wit, wisdom and presence will be missed by friends and family alike.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn J. Coughlin of Dakota City; three children, Cathie Robbins and her husband, Carlton, of Phoenix, Ariz., Tim L. Coughlin and his wife, Nikki, of Sioux City and Liz Coughlin of Phoenix; five granddaughters, Chelsea and Caitlin Robbins, Maeve, Finnola and Niamh Coughlin; a grandson due in July; eight brothers, Pat Coughlin of California, Mike, James Jr., Dan, Vincent, Kevin, Terry and John Coughlin, all of Sioux City; and two sisters, Mary Goodwin of California and Colleen Casey of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James R. and Dorothy J. (Knowles) Coughlin.
Timothy K. CoughlinCopyright (c) 2006 Sioux City Journal

When looking for an obit, it's helpful to know when the research subjects were born, so as to have some idea of when they might have died (and therefore what resources to check), and to evaluate possible matches.

Taking a quick look at the 1930 census index, I see that Herman POOLE was born circa 1883 in IA, and Florence was born circa 1886 in WI.

The Pooles appear to have still been alive in 1945, when the following news item was published:

Laurens Sun | Laurens, Iowa | Thursday, April 05, 1945 | Page 4

Engagement to
Laurens Man

Mr. and Mrs. Herman E. Poole of Sioux City have announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Donna M. Poole, to First Lieutenant Ernest M. Dahlberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Dahlberg of Laurens. The wedding will take place Friday evening, April 6 at the Morningside Presbyterian Church in Sioux City.

Looking for information on any baptismal records that may have taken place in Sioux City around 1854-1862. Most likely they would be by traveling Jesuit Fathers or Missionaries. Also any mission for half blood Indian orphan children in that area at the same time frame.
