Joe Owen signed my Great Granparents marriage certificate. He is also listed as head of household on the 1880's census for the nieces and nephews. Unfortunately I am not able to prove that James's albert Powell's parents is John and Julia. I beleive someone incorrectly added the names of James's children as the parents names. So I am starting over again.

Hi, nice to know you made progress!

Did you notice this question previously posted from EllinSpain:
"What proof is there that Joe Owens is related??? where is the connection to Powell?? is he a brother to the mum?? proof??"

I repeated the question:
"How do you know it is JOE who is a blood relative of James? Your source?"

I have some info on Stong, only back to Benjamin J. Stong (B: 1820). He may have been married to Ada Besta Duffield (1877-1967), daughter of George C. Duffield and Adalaide Stidger. That would've have made him very much older than Ada was.

So, I managed to track down an address for the Owen's when they lived in Iowa. Maybe this will help in getting more information about Robert (ie: his life from 1950 until his death in 1967)...

708 Wall Ave
(FT) Des Moines, Iowa

I also learned that Joyce and the two daughters moved to Missouri in September of 1949, though I'm not sure if Robert moved with them. After the younger daughters birth in 1948, I have not been able to track down any other information on him...

To get additional help, you'll want to compile and post your known information. Post transcriptions of your records, and when you state information include the source of the information (not yourself - some other source). Place names should include the county (family history records are searched by county).

It's tough on you that there are so many people of that name and age - and some of them are married to a spouse with same name as his spouse! This is one reason why you'll want to be very detailed and specific and complete as you develop information, building on it one step at a time.

You have the 1900 census, but didn't state the immigration year. That's an example of why transcriptions of records are so awesome - the records include information that we forget to include when we just write in paragraph style about someone.

Here's a start at a summary, something for you to work with:

Seeking family history of Charles or Carl Johnson.
Called "Charley." (family knowledge)
Family had reunions in Canada in the early 1900s (family knowledge).
Born about December 1855 in Sweden (per 1900 census?).
Worked in lumbering and mining (source?)
Married 1882 in Michigan to (source?)
Caroline or Karen "Carrie" Anderson
Carrie was born abt 1865 in Denmark
They divorced about 1919 (source?)

CHILDREN born in Michigan
Edward Johnson born about 1891
Annie L. Johnson born about 1899
Carl Johnson born about 1907
Emma Johnson
Matilda "Tillie" Johnson

Lived in following places
(you didn't say what years he lived where, or give your source):
Menominee, Menominee County, Michigan
Faithorn, Menominee County, Michigan
Norway, Dickinson County, Michigan
Iron Mountain, Dickinson County, Michigan

Died 1942 in Rhinelander, Oneida, Wsconsin (source?)

Here's an incomplete transcription of 1910 census - I've gotta run but will check back. :D

1910 US Census
Menominee County, Michigan
Charles Johnson 55
Caroline Johnson 45
Edward Johnson 19
Annie Johnson 11
Carl Johnson 3

I'm looking for information on Robert Glen Owen (my great-grandfather). Not much is known, other than he enlisted in the army in 1942 (Jefferson Barracks), and had two daughters with Joyce Bernadine Owen (Ward), both born in the late 1940's, in Des Moines, Iowa. I also know his father's name was Homer, and his mother was Leona (he also had a sister, Dorothy, and a brother, Kenneth).

I've managed to track a few census records, but not enough to help me put together the missing pieces of my family history. I'm specifically looking for any information as to when he passed away, and more importantly, if he ever remarried and had more children.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Christine Owen, I think)

1880 Census
Alma, Crawford, Arkansas
J. S. Owin 54 b abt 1826 Tennessee
M. C. Owin 45 b abt 1835 Tennessee
M. E. Powel 16 niece father b Illinois; mother b Missouri
W. A. Powel 12 nephew
J. A. Powel 10 nephew (prob age 8)
A. J. Powel 8 nephew (prob age 10)
All the Powel children are born in Missouri

If the relationship noted is correct then - based on the census alone - there are 3 possibilities:
1) Joe Owen is brother to the Powell children's mother
2) M. Christine is sister to the Powell children's father
3) M. Christine is sister to the Powell children's mother

Okay, then we'll drop the alternate 1880 census that EllinSpain located and stick with the family in Alma in 1880. Missouri Digital Heritage has a collection of death certificates that I searched but I did not find (listed in that collection) a Powell (a father for James) who died in the right time frame. The collection does not appear to be complete. I have not found James's family in the 1870 census. Mysterious. They may be indexed with a misspelling or an odd spelling of their surname (Povel, Pawell, etc). I tried wildcard * on Ancestry.com in various positions. They must be there - we are just not finding them so far.

Next both the husband and wife of the Owens couple should be traced back to find their siblings who could be candidates for James's mother or father. I haven't worked on that - is there a history of research on that?

ELLinSpain, you often find records I didn't find. Did you search for little James in the 1870 census?

I am 99% sure this is right. And I have seen this other record you are talking about. The family has always known James had two brothers and a older sister and that he was raised by an uncle Joe. I have James marriage certificate with Joseph Owen signature as witness and the census, which is how I figured out who James uncle was. And this is where I am stuck. I have James Death certificate also and no parents are listed. I don't think he applied for social security either. I will look into those records you posted too. Thanks so much for looking.

I don't know which parents Joseph Owen was related to of James. It has been rumored that James parents were born in France but I have not found any proof. So, yes I am still searching. I am sure I have the right 1880 census and I believe they have the birthdates mixed up between A J and J A Powell. I appreciate any help I can get I really feel I am getting close. Someone out there has the answer. Thank you so much for replying and your help.

Hi,

In earlier posts you were seeking the names of James's parents. Are you still seeking? Do you know the names of the parents of the Owen couple? I don't suppose you know which of the Owens was related to which of James's parents...

Simply as a quick reaction (not definitive) I'd guess there is likely no connection between your Owen family and this one. This Owen family originated in Kentucky rather than Tennessee.

1880 Census
Alma, Crawford, Arkansas
J. S. Owin 54 b abt 1826 Tennessee
M. C.
Congratulations on your find. I have been following the thread hoping something might come up related to my own search. My great grandfather was James albert Powell b.1868, his parents died when he was about three yrs old. He was raised by his Uncle Joe S. Owen. They are listed on the 1880 Alma, Arkansas census. I have been trying to find the names of James parents. I believe James's parents died in Missouri but not sure. James married Nancy Effie Murray in Polk, Missouri on 1894 and Joe Owen signed their marriage certificate. Unfortunately the 1880 census lists only the initials of the first names and I do not know the Aunt's name. If you come across any Powells related to your Owens I would be very interested.
