I am looking for any information on Carl Levi Willey and his wife Clara Jane Rose. They were married in Lucas County, Iowa on March 14, 1903. I do know Carl and Clara Jane were living in Chase County, Kansas in 1916, as that is where their daughter, Mildred Elizabeth, was born. Carl and Clara Jane also had 3 sons: Horace Otho, Kenneth Carl and Robert Howard.

Hi Folks,
I've been trying for two years to get hold of wills for Enoch Powell who died in Chase County, KS in 1875. For a hundred reasons, I haven't been able to get hold of them. I have the page and film numbers and such to get the documents. What I need now is some kind soul who is in or near Cottonwood Falls who can pick the pages up and send them to me. I'd be more than willing to pay whatever copy or page charges. I need that will, or I think there are two, really, but they're in the same place.
Please contact me if you can help.
Thanks,
Carlette
carlette@mail.com

Perl G. Jones (1888-1979)

I am trying to establish if this Perl Jones is the Perl Jones who married a distant cousin of mine (Madoline/Madeline Rowlett b. Mar 1890 in Missouri) in KC MO on June 13, 1908. This record was found at the Mormon site (Familysearch.org). Madoline/Madeline Rowlett was the daughter of John M. Roulette & Helen M. Canterbury. She had a brother, Lester Frank Rowlett. I've found Perl G. Jones in the 1910 census for KC MO, but his wife is "Vera E." So, I am wondering (if it is the same Perl Jones), if perhaps he and Madoline/Madeline divorced or she died before he married Vera. I have come across another person's family tree with this Perl G. Jones (son of Richard "Dick" Clayton S. Jones & Mary Hix). There is no wife listed, but there is a son - Walter Jones. I do know that this Jones family was in Matfield Green, Chase Co., Kansas. Many of the Jones' are buried in the Matfield Green Cemetery. Perl G. Jones died in 1979 at 90 years of age!

Any help is appreciated - just wanting to rule out if this Perl Jones is the one who married Madoline/Madeline Rowlett.

Diane Carter

I've learned new details abt William Jay Wilson b 1829 Ohio and family. I'm convinced that this William J. in Chase Co. is of my Wilson extended family. They were from Ohio, moved to Illinois 1833 to Missouri mid 1840's & on to Kansas. It appears William returned to Ohio, later to Chase co. In the 1900/1910 census Toledo, Chase Co. I find William and Maria.
The names of the family of 1st wife Anarah Evans are:
John, b 1861; Mary 1863; Charles Sumner 1867; Daniel 1869; Martha 1862; James O. 1874; Nathan 1862.
Charles Sumner is also the name of a son of Andrew Wilson (bro. of William)....I've not discovered the relevance of the Sumner middle name yet.
William's 2nd wife is Marie, the family names are Thomas b 1882; Margaret 1884, she m. Seward Yenzer.

I'm searching for info on William Wilson, I find Chase County KS family which seems to have the right timeframe. I believe he is son of William S. Wilson 1797 & Rebecca Pearce Wilson 1800 who were in 1850 Jasper Co. Mo. census.
They had come from Ohio in 1833 to Kendall Co. Illinois, abt 1845 they moved on to Jasper Co. MO. I've located some of the children from their marriage....Irving, Andrew, Matilda, John, Nancy, Elizabeth, Martha, Parry, Daniel, Marietta. Still searching for info on all of them. I'm from line of Daniel David Wilson b 1825 m. Sarah Combs 1845 in Jasper co. MO.
Grateful for any clues.
Viola
Matthew Agnew death notice Chase Co., 16 Jul 1885

Found that a Chase County, KS, newspaper of 16 Jul 1885 lists the death of Mathew (Matthew) Agnew. I know that he was born about 1804 in PA, married Anna, b. about 1811 in OH, raised a family in Bureau County, IL, where first son James B. and wife Anna died. Mathew's daughter, Anna Eliza, b. about 1836 in IL, married Orange Hezekiah C. Smith, and that family moved to KS in about 1877. Mathew Agnew lives with the Orange H.C. Smith family in the 1880>KS>Marion>Branch census. I find William Agnew, Matthew's youngest child, living with Orange/Anna Smith's daughter, Lillian Winner (Mr. Benjamin), in the 1920>KS>Reno>Hutchinson census. Any more info on Matthew Agnew, William Agnew, or Orange H. C. Smith in this county?
Peggy Hendricks
pphendricks@yahoo.com

CLERC - Chase Co., KS / 1887 - 1892 Lookup

Are there any local books written about the county history and it's citizens during the time period of 1887 - 1892?

I am looking for Pierre Louis Charles CLERC, who immigrated from France in 1887 and lived in Kansas until 1892. The remainder of his years were spent in Jefferson County, MO, where he made a living 'making' , packaging and selling his products, such as stove polish. He did quite a business with poultry products - from feed to medications.

Usually these types of things are documented in the county's history. If anyone can guide me as to where to find this information, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
Kay, FL
MehdiFakhar@aol.com

I am looking for any information concerning my great-great uncle Gus Wagner (b. June 1872 d. June 1941 Clements, KS), his wife Maude Stevens (b Feb 1877 d. 30 Jan 1961) and their daughter Lotteva. Gus and Maude were carnival performers; both had their bodies completely tattooed. Gus was also a prolific woodcarver (he carved totem poles and wooden scenes). For many years they lived in Clements, KS at Maude's parents' place known as the "Stevens' Place". Lotteva married Russell "Tarzan" Davis who may have been from the Lawton, OK area. Lotteva and Russell were also carnival performers and they may have owned a sign painting business. Gus and Maude are both buried in the Chase Co. Cemetery.

I would love to hear from anyone who may know about them!
Thanks, Chris Wagner

Hi,

I'm hoping to correspond with someone who has knowledge about the early Toledo Monthly Meeting of Quakers in the town of Toledo in Chase County.

Am researching a charter member of that group named Margaret H. Watkins.

I am already in touch with the archivist at Edmund Stanley Library/Quaker Archives at Wichita KS but would also like to find a contact in Chase County.

My particular interest is in the year 1866 when the Quaker Meeting was known as the Toledo Preparative Meeting......before it became a Monthly Meeting.

Thanks so much,

Karren A.

Early residents of Chase county - Sarah Melissa Martin and her husband James P. Worrall - lived in Jackson county near Holton KS for two years (1868-1870), in Chase county for about 12 years (1871-1883), then relocated to Council Grove in Morris County (1883-1901).

We are looking for a newspaper account of a visit by Sarah's parents, Ambrose Martin and wife Phebe from Tuscola or Camargo, Illinois, dated between early 1875 and late 1877. We also would like to find a copy of Sarah Melissa's obituary. She was born 1 Feb 1834 in Athens county Ohio, died 28 April 1901 at Council Grove, KS.

Also interested in any family-related information about Sarah Melissa Martin and her first husband, James P. Worrall, whom we believe was a wagonmaker. She was also reported to be married to Marot Walmsley later on, but this is not confirmed. There were said to be several children born to the Worrall marriage.

Thank you - Claudia Glass, Hutchinson KS
