Yes, David Dinwiddie could have been referring to Hells Bend - I hadn't thought about that. Joe Mann & his brother had a little shop there in the late 40s or early 50s. They were snake hunters, especially hunted poisonous snakes to sell, & had displays of preserved snakes in jars in their little building. At the entrance door was a box with a sign saying something like "See baby rattlers inside" & if you lifted the lid, you saw human baby rattles. The Manns often hunted snakes on our property NW of LaCygne. They'd sometimes bring their gunny-sack bags of snakes to the house to show us a really big one. They didn't get them all - there are still plenty of snakes along the river bluffs.
