Sipes Family

I am interested in any information anyone might have re. the family of Lawson W. Sipes and Sarah Louisa Connely Sipes. They lived near Canton, McPherson County from approx. 1875-1886. Their children were named Prissilla Ann, Sarah Louisa, Mary Francis, Lawson Ira, Lura May, Cyrus Newton, William David, Adda Medora, Paul Augustus, Hiram Henderson, and Ernest Emery. The last 3 appear to have been born in McPherson County in 1877, 1879, and 1881. Several of the daughters appear to have possibly married men from this county also. These might be: Prissilla Ann married Thomas Albert Holmes; Mary Francis married Orpheus Koplin, Lura May married Eli Pray; and Adda Medora married William Ira Nall. If you have any information about any of these individuals, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

I am doing research on the descendants of Peter Erlandson/Peterson who left Öland, Sweden in the year 1870 (approx.) and settled near the Smokey Hill River in McPherson County, Kansas in the town of Freemont.

After a few years (1876) he sent for his children. Their names were: Helena E.(b.1 Apr 1859); Maria Mathilda (b. 6 Aug 1860); John Peter (b. 19 Jun 1864); and Nils Magnus (b.
17 Feb 1867).

Is there anyone in the McPherson CO. Lindsberg area familiar with the descendants of this early family to the area?

Did Peter Peterson remarry?
Helen Peterson married a John Nelson. Are there any descendants from that union?
Maria Mathilda apparently never married.
John Peter apparently maried my great aunt, Kristina Elisabet Svensson/Nilsson in Pueblo, Colorado. This branch is well documented.
Nils Magnus information is quite sparse. Information needed.
I would like to correspond with anyone that has information about the Strahan family in McPherson County. Thomas Strahan was born in Scotland around 1838 and his family including son William b ~1860 in Canada moved to near Galva in about 1866. William had four sons, three of which survived and grew up in McPherson, Elmer, Dale, and John Norman. John's wife was Bessie Ward, and I have very little information about her although I have a ton of pictures (most of which are not identified in any way). Elmer was married to Evelyn (sic?) and lived in McPherson all his life.

I am looking for information on the death and burial of William Winner. His son Ephraim Winner is buried in McPherson County. Ephraim and his wife were born in Western Illinois but moved to McPherson County shortly after the Civil War. Ephraim's Father-in-law, Hezekiah Hulse, also moved to McPherson County and is buried there. I have not been able to find any information on the death or burial of Ephraim's father, William, in Illinois and wonder if he also moved to Kansas before his death. Another of William's childred, Hepsibee Winner Hulse, moved with her husband to Rooks County, Kansas after the Civil War. If anyone has any information on William Winner's death or burial, I would appreciate it if you could share it with me. Thanks, Mike Meisinger
Solloda M. Foye (1831-1897), oldest son of William and Jane Miller Foye (of Ohio), was, I assumed, a bachelor farmer until he is listed in the 1895 Kansas state census, in McPherson County, as having, evidently, a wife listed as A.V.T. Foye - a 55 year old white female born in Ohio, living with him. No mention of her in his May 13, 1897 Ohio obituary, and she disappears from subsequent census records. Does anyone know who she might have been - is she in a McPherson County cemetery? Or, might she have been a live-in "friend", who was politely listed with his last name?
John Wolfinger - Atlanta, GA

We have a postcard from "Minnie".

A photo of Henry Haber and wife.

And a photo of four (I'm sorry, but not very attractive women) Julia, Louisa, Amanda and Hannah, no last name.

We'd love to know who they are.
Please respond to the e-mail below.
Thanks
Valerie
valerieak1@hotmail.com

Abt 1891, Charles R. MUNGER of Newton, his banking business defunct, set about to develope the gulf coast paradise of Pasadena, in Harris county, Texas. The 1st deed was purchased 31/Dec/1892 by Martin L. HOCKER of Kansas. John RICHEY, Dr. W.W. MURPHY, Charles W. WEBSTER, Mr. HOFFMAN & John F. WAFER came down from McPherson, KS with MUNGER late in Jan 1893. The overnight prospects were boarded by Wm Wiley & May ANDERSON w/children Floyd, Ida, Pearl & Lucy, also from Kansas. On 30/Jan/1893, John RICHEY purchased 20 acres for $500 & for the first time, "Pasadena" was used legally to describe the area. Today the city is the home of massive petrochemical plants... and the Johnson Space Center (NASA) sits not in the city limits of Houston, but in the City of Pasadena, settled by Kansas folks.

Rosalie Essex CHAPIN (1888 - 1924) Obit

From the
McPherson Daily Republican
McPherson, Kansas
(McPherson County)
Tuesday, April 15, 1924

Rosalie May Essex was born April 16, 1888, and was adopted in childhood by Elisha and Mrs. Harriet Essex of McPherson, Kansas.

She joined the church when she was a girl and about ten years ago united with the McPherson Presbyterian church of which she has been a consistent member ever since. She was married September 19, 1905 to Archie D. Chapin to which union were born five children, all of whom survive here.

They are: Charles, eighteen years old, Ernest sixteen, James thirteen, Jennie May ten and Dorothy Maxine seven, all of whom survive their mother. Her mother, Mrs. Essex and her husband also survive and will keep the children together.

Mrs. Chapin has been a great sufferer for a few years but not a great complainer, for she bore her sufferings in a most remarkable way, thinking more of her family and the welfare of her little children than of herself. She departed this life April 11, 1924, 12:55 A.M. in McPherson.

The funeral service was held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, April 13, in the presence of a great company of friends of the family. Rev. L. H. Eakes, her pastor conducted the service. The large congregation and the many beautiful floral offerings were indications of her good favor among her acquaintances and friends. The ladies of the Degree of Honor of which Mrs. Chapin was a member, conducted the committal services at the cemetery.

The many friends of the family extend sympathy to the bereaved father and children.
I am searching for information on family members who immigrated from Russia to Inman, KS to farm. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kliewer and their daughter, Margaret Kliewer, came to America when Margaret was 12. She was born August 12, 1860 in Mariewhol, Russia. They were members of the Mennonite religion. Margaret's first husband was Cornelius Froese, and her second husband was Martin P. Riemer. (She also had two more husbands, Heinrich Janzen and Jacob Doerksen!)
I have fairly good records of their lives after they moved to Oklahoma, but would like more info about their lives in Kansas, and possibly information about their farm near Inman, in McPherson County.
Thanks!
Daisy married Don Kinney in McPherson, KS and they both died there in the 1960's. They had a son named Don. Third is Anna Mae born 1897 in TN. Anna married Behtet Eugene Zumbrun in 1921 in McPherson. They had 2 children, Mary Ann and Max. Last we have Alva Alvester born 1910 in TN. He marred Hazel Oberg (?) in 1946. They had a son named William. Robert E and Suzy were my great grandparents and I would love to learn more about their other chilren and grnadchildren.
Also, does anyone know anything about a cigar factory in the town of McPherson in the 1900's? Census shows Daisy Pearl worked there.

Pat

I would appreciate assistance locating an obituary for Lura Ellen (DAVIS) ALLEN who is listed with a burial in the McPherson City Cemetery about 19 April 1958. Lura seems to have been a resident of McPherson through most of her life.

A transcription would certainly be appreciated. I would be glad to pay reasonable costs for the lookup and a copy if that would be easier.

Lura's husband was Charles B.
Byron Dennis

I am trying to find info about Byron Dennis, who may have lived in McPherson around 1886.. The last record I have for him is the 1880 US Census, on which he lives in Rush, KS. At that time, the family consisted of Byron, his wife Nancy Zemira "Myra", and adopted daughters Joicee Lizzie and Lillie B. I think the family may have moved to McPherson before 1886 because Byron's son, George Albert Dennis, stated on his WWI draft registration that he was born in McPherson, KS, in 1886.

I believe that Byron died around 1888, but have been unable to find a death record for him. Family tradition says that he was murdered. His wife and two sons who were born in KS returned to Michigan. I've found no further record of the adopted daughters.

If anyone can find any info about this family in KS, what happened to the two adopted daughters, and especially the circumstances of Byron's death, I would be very grateful.

Malmstrom

My great-grandfather was Axel Ulric MALMSTROM who was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He came to the USA at age 16 and worked on ships in the Great Lakes. Later he moved to Prairie Co. AR where he married Sarah E. Russell in 1885. He enlisted to serve in the Spanish/American War in 1898 in Kansas City. After he was released from the service he disappeared. He is sometimes was called Alex or Eric. There are Malmstroms in McPherson Co. KS. It is believed he remarried and started a new family after he war. I am collecting info on Malmstrom families to see if I can find new relationships to this family. I wish to find where Axel died [possibly abt 1914].
