Aurelia Anna Hoyt Davis obituary

Aurelia Anna Hoyt was born at Big Prairie, Kalamazoo county, Michigan, Nov. 22nd, 1847. She was married to Lyman A. Davis Aug 28th 1864 in Banger, LaCross county, Wisconsin. They moved to Nemaha county, Kansas in 1866 and settled on a homestead a few miles northwest of Goff where they resided until about four years when they moved to Bancroft, Kansas. There were five children born unto Mr and Mrs Davis, those surviving are W E Davis, H G Davis, D E Davis and Mrs W D Calder all of Bancroft, Kansas. The husband died January 8, 1910.
Mrs Davis has been a member of the Methodist church for about forty-five years and has lived a devoted Christian life. She has a host of friends who cherish her memory. There is something nearing the divine to have lived in a community so long and gather to such a host of true friends. The secret of this is that she herself was a true friend to all.
The funeral services were conducted at the home of her son, H G Davis and the sermon preached by Rev Chas A Richard. The interment was in the Fairview cemetery north of Goff beside her husband.

Lyman Alonzo Davis obituary

Lyman A. Davis was born at Florida, N.Y., September 6, 1839, died at his home in Bancroft, Kansas, January 8, 1910. Was married to Annie A. Hoyt at Bangor, Wis., August 26, 1864, to which union were five children born: viz. Wm. E. Davis of Ontario, KS., H.G. Davis and D.E. Davis of Goff, Mrs. Alice A. Calder of Bancroft and Effie, died in infancy. Beside the four children he is survived by the wife.
Enlisting in the 3rd Wis. Cav. in 1862 he served one year when he was mustered out with honorable discharge at Leavenworth, Kansas. Emmigrating to Kansas at an early day he passed through and experienced all the vicissitudes of the pioneers of this section and his lot like that of most of his neighbors, in those days was anything but the most encouraging. However, with a persistency of purpose almost invariably among the most invaluable asset of the early settler, he won out and lived to see the country develop into one of prosperity and plenty, conditions to which he contributed a full share through the agency of honest toil and the spirit of good fellowship, and working to a common end, viz. advancement.
Lon. Davis, a name by which he was familiarly known to all, was a man made of the stuff that makes a country. Always a whole souled jovial personage, he enjoyed the highest esteem and implicit confidence of a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Every fiber of his being seemed the embodiment of cheerfulness and this trail in his nature, no doubt had much to do with the way he lingered in his last illness.
Death was the result of typhoid pneumonia fever with which he was taken ill early last fall. Only about a week ago he was moved overland from his former home in the Maple Shade neighborhood to the new home at Bancroft, which he had purchased not long since and where he and Mrs. Davis had expected to spend their declining years. The trip was made without him seeming any the worse for it. During Friday night his condition took a turn for the worse and death resulted early Saturday morning.
Funeral was held in Bancroft, Sunday at 11 o'clock p.m. (sic) conducted by Rev. Clawson and was attended by the Goff I.O.O.F. lodge of which order he had long been a member. Burial was in Fairview cemetery Sunday afternoon according to the ritual of Odd fellowship.

I am looking for this Clarence McKee. He was born in Salem, Columbiana, Ohio in May 1873. He lived there, was married to Ida and raising a family through the 1910 Census. In 1915 Clarence, 41, is listed in Rock Creek, Nemaha KS with his widowed father William F. McKee, 66. William's sister was Mary McKee Cotton, for whom the Sabetha library is named. Mary had died in Sabetha in 1912 a wealthy woman so perhaps William and or Clarence had inherited some money or land there. William returned to Ohio and died there in 1918. But Clarence is listed in the WW I draft registration in 1918 in Sabetha KS with his nearest relative as Millie McKee also in Sabetha. In the 1920 Census Clarence, 46, is again listed in Rock Creek, Nemaha Co. with wife Millie, 46, born in Canada. I have been unable to find a marriage or death record for either Clarence or Millie or any records after this 1920 Census. Does anyone have any suggestions of places that I might look further. I have tried ancestry, rootsweb, findagrave, USGENWEB archives.
Thank you in advance.
Nancy McKee Smith

Do you also have James and Jennie Stephenson?

James traces back a few generations to Edward Stephenson, who was killed in a famous Native American attack at Paint Lick, Ky., in Madison County. Edward's father was also Edward, b. about 1714, d. 1766 in Amherst Co., Va. That's as far back as I've been able to go so far. I'm descended from Edward Jr.'s brother Robert.

I'd be interested in obituaries on any of the people mentioned in this thread. Ada would be my fourth cousin, four times removed, so it's a pretty distant relationship, but a group of us have traced the Stephensons back to about 1714. I'm trying to flesh out what I know about the various Stephensons in my tree.

MikeSt (at) aol.com

My great-great-grandfather is buried in Oneida. Elijah Howard "Ebenezer" Ward was born c.1835 in Canada of Irish or English descent. Settled in Richardson Co. NE, worked at a veterinarian, died 1901 in Oneida KS. I would love to know the circumstances of his death and why he is buried in Oneida. His grave marker is a stack of red bricks with "E WARD" chiseled into one of them. I do have a photo.

Ebenezer's wife, Sarah Ann Orner, was born in PA in 1840 and is buried as "Mrs. Dr." Sarah Ward in Tecumseh NE in 1921

Their daughter, Eva Jane Ward, was born 1877 in IA, worked in a restaurant in Seneca KS, and married Julius Howard Orlick/Orlik/Orlich in 1897 in Seneca. Julius was a German immigrant who worked at a livery stable in Seneca.

If you come across any info of this family I would love to hear from you.
Thanks for your efforts!
kathy@wrighthorse.com

Does anyone have access to obits or death notices? I am trying to locate any information on my Great,Great Grandparents that died in Seneca, Kansas. I found one reference which stated that Mary Eliza Strong Warrell Died on April 30, 1900. and found another reference that stated her husband James Henderson Warrell died either a few days before or after her.
Would like to have any information - they have several children that seem to have been split up immediately after their death. Have found very little information on James Warrell. Thanks
Great-grandparents met and married in Seneca KS in 1897. Their daughter, Mabel, was born there in 1899. Julius Orlik/Orlick was a German immigrant who worked at a livery stable. Eva was the daughter of Canadian (possibly Irish) immigrant Ebenezer Ward & Sarah Ann Orner/Arner/Ahner Ward of Tecumseh NE. Julius & Eva then moved to St. Joseph MO. Ebenezer died and is buried in Oneida. He may have worked as a veterinarian in the area.

Would appreciate any local information or period photos showing the livery stable/blacksmith shop and/or restaurant. Particularly interested in cause of death of Ebenezer on 24 Mar 1901. Julius & Eva left Seneca in 1902. Sarah and remaining family stayed in NE. She died in 1921 and is buried in Tecumseh.

kathy@wrighthorse.com

The Northwest Route and The Route of the Leavenworth, Kansas and Western Railroad, 1871 - 1935, by Leon Lowry

Booklets on the library shelves of the Jackson County Historical Society: "The Northwest Route", published in 1972 and "The Route of the Leavenworth, Kansas and Western Railroad, 1871 - 1935", published in 1980 by Leon Lowry. Not indexed.

These informational booklets, complete with pictures, are helpful as an overview of the routes covered by these two railroads. Both railroads parted at Circleville, one going northwest, the other west. As in all research material, it’s always good to check and verify additional sources.

The Kansas City, Wyandotte, and Northwestern Railroad came into Jackson County at Denison, after leaving Valley Falls. From there, depots were at Birmingham, Holton, Circleville, and Ontario. The line left Kansas at Summerfield.

As stated in Lowry’s second book, the Leavenworth, Pawnee and Western Railroad was established after the signing of the treaty with the Delaware Indians in 1860. It was renamed the Kansas Central in 1871 and changed to the Leavenworth, Kansas and Western (LK&W) in 1897. It’s route across Leavenworth and Jefferson counties brought it to Jackson county at Larkin [now Larkinburg]. It continued on to a siding at Bevard (two miles west of Larkin); another siding at Drake (four miles west of Bevard); Holton; Circleville; and Soldier. From there it entered Havensville in Pottawatomie county, continuing with stops across that county, Riley and Clay counties, ending at Miltonvale in Cloud county.

Contact us at: www.holtonks.net/jchs

Ontario cemetery

Ontario cemetery is located on the Nemaha county side of the road on 286th Rd between I & J Roads. A stone marker was engraved by the Jackson County Historical Society as follows: Ontario, probably named for Ontario, Canada, was located one-half mile east of here near Elk Creek. It straddled the Jackson-Nemaha county line. Settlers came here in the 1850s, following the 39th Parallel Trail connecting Atchison, Kansas, to Denver, Colorado. The post office existed from 1862 to 1922. The Kansas City, Wyandotte, and Northwestern Railroad promoted growth in the area and existed from 1887 to 1919. A log cabin school in the late 1850s (on the Jackson county side) was replaced with a frame building in 1871 in Nemaha county as District #2 N & J. It had 106 students in 1891; it closed in 1954. A church was built in the 1890s for all denominations. It later became a Methodist church, closing in 1949. Businesses on the Nemaha side included the depot, stockyards, and elevator. Businesses on the Jackson side included a general store, blacksmith, barber shop, telephone exchange, doctors' offices, and cider mill. Marked by Jackson County Historical Society, 2007. [Original] Wooden marker set in 1980 on the south (Jackson county) side: Ontario settled here on a six acre site on the Parallel Trail in 1862. Post office 1862-1924. Kansas City Northwestern Railroad 1887-1920. Depot located [northwest] of this marker. School 1870-1954. Birthplace of George A. Allen, Jr., Kansas State Superintendent of Public Instruction 1929-1933. All faith’s [?] Church 1890s, later Methodist until 1950. [Cemetery 1/2 miles west of marker.] Jackson County Historical Society - Chartered 1979. She & James were rumored to have married in Carroll County, Missouri, although I do not have any proof of the marriage.

James Stephenson's parents were David & Louisa Temple (Griffith) Stephenson, who were married on 09-21-1856, in Nodaway County, Missouri, and they were my gr-gr-grandparents. David is buried in the Bellemont Cemetery, near Wathena, in Doniphan County, Ks. Louisa, per her death certificate, is buried in the Summit Cemetery in Lawrence County, near Mount Vernon, Missouri. However, there is no record of he burial. Rumor has it that she died while visiting a brother, John F.
I checked an index to the Shawnee County, Kansas marriage records 1856-1994 for you. There are no matches for a Charles SAMS marrying anyone with a name similar to Rosa/Lottie. However, there is an entry for Rosa S DENNIS marrying (or applying for a license to marry) Daniel E BLAKLELSY (that is how the last name appeared!)on September 15, 1893. I didn't find a Rosa BLAKESLEY (or any permutation of that name) or DENNIS or SAMS marrying anyone else in this index.

Good luck with your search.

Kim Baker
Topeka, KS

I am seeking information on Rosa L.(Lottie?) Dennis. She was Born about 1876 in Kansas (perhaps Nemaha or Shawnee County). Her parents were Parran C. Dennis and Martha Elizabeth McGehee who were married in Shawnee County, KS.
Parran was the son of Samuel Dennis born KY - lived in Nemaha County. Rosa married Charles Sams in Shawnee County around 1895. She had a child with surname Blakesley or Blakeley. She may have been married more than once. I am trying to locate names of her husbands and place of her death and burial. Thank you for your help.
Charles B. Hinamon

I am looking for information that would provide me with the day and month the Charles B. HINAMON died in 1939. I know that he is buried in Security Association Cemetery, Topeka Kansas.

His head stone there simply gives the year of his death, but I don't know where to turn to learn of his month and day of death. I believe that he died either in or near Topeka. His granddaughter believes that he was involved in mining and that the death could have been caused by asthma.

Ultimatly, I am hoping that a local paper published a death notice or obituary that I can find a copy of.

I know from Ohio records that he was born in March of 1866. His family moved to Missouri when he was a child, but from there things get sketchy.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
