Maurice E. Towne, Sr., 84, died Dec. 11 at Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan.

He was born Aug. 24, 1918 in Waupin, Wisc., the son of Harold E. and Emily (Steuba) Towne, and had lived in Manhattan since 1976.

He served in the United States Navy during WWII from July 31, 1944 to Aug. 28, 1945 and had the rank of seaman second class. He worked in construction and was well known for being very skilled with concrete and bobcat work, and in his later years was known as "The Handyman."

He was a member of College Avenue United Methodist Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and was a former member of the Manhattan Builders Association and the Topeka Moose Lodge.

On Feb. 14, 1982 in Clay Center, he was married to Leah D. Brown. Mrs. Towne survives of Manhattan. Additional survivors include six children, David Towne of Denver, Colo., Maurice Towne, Jr. of Topeka, Mitchell Towne of Madison, Wis., Sheila Mulligan of Clay Center, Helena Towne and Emily Towne; two step children, Marcile Shippy of Woodbine and Sam Brown of Topeka; one brother, Gordon Towne of Madison, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one daughter Shelley Towne; one brother, Jasper Towne; and one sister, Stella Wegenke.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave.

MANHATTAN --- Maurice E. Towne Sr., 84, Manhattan, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at a Manhattan retirement community.

Mr. Towne worked in construction for many years and was skilled in concrete and bobcat work. He served in the Navy during World War II and was discharged at the rank of seaman second class.

He was born Aug. 24, 1918, in Waupun, Wis., to Harold W. and Emily Steuba Towne. He had lived in Manhattan since 1976.

Mr. Towne was a member of College Avenue United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He was a former member of the Manhattan Builders Association and Topeka Moose Lodge.

He married Leah D. Brown on Feb. 14, 1982, in Clay Center. She survives.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. Burial will be in Greenridge Cemetery east of Industry. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to College Avenue United Methodist Church and sent in care of the funeral home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, 66502.
