I am looking for information on Celia Dunning b. abt 1868, m. Henry Sommerhiser on Dec. 10, 1886 in Rooks County. Henry appears in the 1900 census living in Sugar Loaf, Rooks County with wife Florence and 2 children Roland and Carrie. According to the information he married Florence in 1892. I would like to know if Celia died and if so, is she buried in Rooks County? The location of her final resting place. Celia is my 2x great aunt and I would be happy to share any info I have on this line.

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/QUAKER-ROOTS/2...

If the record you are requesting was "1897" there may not be information for that year. Vol 1 is 187 pages, vol 2 is 228, vol 3 is 133, and vol 4 is 215 pages, Selby publishing and Printing, Kokomo, Indiana.
---In a website dated back in 2008, the Selby company was selling these volumes. http://www.selbypub.com/kansas.htm

As far as William T. Wilson...this name is VERY COMMON. What you know about this person might help further identify his movements and to prove/disprove the above record actually concerns him. This person you inquire upon didn't just show up in Mt. Atr from Chalk Mound and you identified him as your person of interest. In another of your postings, you identify search for records of Anna Wilson, wife of William T. Wilson, who died in Montgomery County, Iowa on 4 Oct 1873. Is there some record you have identified that indicates this William T. Wilson was this person's husband? When you post, it is probably much more important to fully identify the person you seek first, by some criteria information, such as date/place of birth, parents, siblings, spouse...OR that the person's name happens to match a person that you had found somewhere else. I am SURE, POSITIVE, that the records from the Quaker meetings will not identify this person enough to connect him as being ANY of the William T. Wilson in the US at that time. In this case, it "appears" your search first begins with data concerning this Anna Wilson, or whoever was connected. This person's date of birth would be VERY helpful to finding his ultimate date of death, cemetery, etc.

Hi,

I found the following:

"Quakers settled Mt. Atr and Round Mound areas of osborne County and Laton and Chalk Mound portions of eastern Rooks County in 1877 to 1880."
Source: Rooks County Historical Society, 921 S. Cedar, Stockton, KS 67669, 785-425-7217
www.rookscounty.net/museum.htm

I think the book you want/need is the Kansas Quaker Monthly Meeting Records, Volume 1, Chalk Mound (1879) Rooks Co., Kansas.

Contact your local library and ask if they'll do an inter-library loan. If the holding library won't release the book for a loan, ask to have the pages copies where William T. Wilson's name appears.

I also saw that it was for sale when I did a Google search. Successful Searching!

I did the look-up for you in The Stockton (Kansas) Review. The obituary appeared Thursday, July 29, 1920, page 1. Note that I am not related and have no further information. If you would like the photocopy, contact me off site within 30 days at rbaker13@ sbcglobal.net
Kim Baker
Topeka, Kansas
__________________
OBITUARY
Sarah Ann Fisher was born in York County Pa., February 28, 1842. She moved to Pottawatomie County, Iowa, in 1874, and then moved farther west in 1886, settling in Rooks County, Kansas.

On December 6, 1892 she was married to Simon L. Tarbell of Stockton, Kansas and lived in or near the city until the day of her death.

At an early age in life, Mrs. Tarbell united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was always outstanding in her religious convictions and faith. She lived a devoted and consistent christian life, and attended regularly the services of the church of her choice till ill health prevented.

She was an active member of the Relief Corps of Stockton and was always ready to give her time and energy to the furthering of those interests with which she was identified.

Her ill health dates back for many months. She was a patient sufferer during all her illness, and kept asking her Lord for relief from bodily ailment, if it were His will, convinced that anything was not too much for her God. As the disease kept fastening itself upon her, she bowed submissively to what she interpreted as the Divine Will, and concluded she could not fully recover.

However, neither she nor her immediate friends had considered her so near the border line. The evening previous to her passing away, she gave instructions concerning the breakfast meal for the following morning, saying as she said so, she might not feel so well at that time, and would tell them beforehand. She left the circle of earthly companionship at the breakfast hour on the morning of July 26, 1920, to join in the breaking of bread in the Kingdom of God beyond.

The funeral was to have been held at the Methodist Church at three o’clock Wednesday, but a message from her brother en route informed them that he had missed connections and was making the trip by auto. The funeral was then delayed until Thursday at ten o’clock which would give her brother ample time to arrive before the services.

The services are being held this morning from the Methodist church conducted by her pastor Rev. C. A. Fisher and the remains will be laid to rest in the Stockton cemetery.
Hi,

I just caught something & had a question. In Sarah's obit, you state published 7/9/1920, but DOD mentioned toward end of obit is 7/26/1920. I'm sure it's just a typo, but was not sure on which date, whether she died on 7/6 & published 7/9, or died on 7/26 & published 8/9?

I would like clarification there.

Thanks again!
Amy

Thank you, Kim! Thank you so much! What wonderful information in these obituaries for Sarah & Simon. Sarah's confirms a suspicion I had that her name might have been Fisher as opposed to Reichart, though I thought it was her first married name, but I apparently it implies maiden name since it follows with birth detail.

Sincerley,
Amy

In the year 1880 they came to Kansas and located at Cawker City, and a year later took a homestead in Alcona township, Rooks county.
I'm a family researcher from Kansas, and have worked on my husband's family connections using old newspapers on microfilm at the Kansas Historical Society in Topeka. Miltonvale published its own paper, the Miltonvale Record, a weekly, with great little items sent in by county correspondents. Reels of this paper may be borrowed through the inter-library loan system. To find the reel numbers you would need, use the Historical Society's newspaper index:
www.kshs.org
Go to the research link, then find newspapers under that.
It's time consuming research, but sometimes I have found totally unexpected things.

I suspect your Jeremiah is the son of Etienne Bechard Beriade and his wife Adeline Marie Bessette. Etienne and Adeline were married in 1882 and had 13 children: Esther, Evalina, William, Peter, Michael, Jeremiah, Lena, Mathilda, Felix, Isadore, Edward, Ella, and Melvina. Jeremiah would have been born about 1890. Etienne's father and mother were Moises Beriade Bechard (1821)and Esther Marie Derome (1827). The next generation would be Louis Beriade (1792 in Acadie) and Marie Girard (1792). The next generation would be Louis Pierre Bechard Beriade (1748 in Quebec City) and his wife Clothilde Marie Remillard (July 6 1761 Quebec City). The next generation would be Louis Jr Bechard Beriade (Sept 22, 1725 Beaumont, Quebec) and his wife Francoise Marie Hemond April 23 1726). The next generation would be Louis Bechard (Nov 25, 1691) and his wife Catherine Ganet-Guenet-Dumont (Jan 31 1698). The next generation would be Louis Rene Bechard Beriade (1665) and his wife Anne Marie Valliancourt (May 7, 1672). The next generation would be Pierre Bechard (1650) and his wife Anne Marie Gallet (1655). That is as far back as I have the Bechard family. I have every generation's children. I am posting my Deserre gedcom on Ancestry that you can use to fill in all the children.

I believe my Jeremiah is your relative but I do not have any birth certificate to verify that situation. I would recommend you look in Catholic church records in Cloud county Kansas for verification.

I saw your post from 2006 and have a little information on William Richardson Chandler from the "Lest We Forget" book of the Rooks County Historical Society. I also have additional information on his wife Elizabeth Winner Kilgore Chandler who was my great great grandmother's sister. If you are interested please send me an email at mrm1970@aol.com.

Regards,

Mike Meisinger

regarding Harriet Betts-In 1911 she is listed as being from Logan , Kansas on her first daughter Alice's obit. Alice's husband nurdered her and then himself in front of their oldest child.(Seattle times archives june 7,1911.) In 1916 she is NOT listed as a child on her mother's requst for entrance into Retsil Veteran's home with her 2nd husband Otis Sanders. I'm thinking she died between 1911-1915.Her mother Martha Betts married O.S.Sanders. He died in 1920 and I can't find Martha anywhere after that.

I would suggest Luc Brown was the father of the Brown who married Helen Simoneau. Luc Brown was born in Munster, Germany. He married Louise Marie Couet who was born in 1761. I have three children for them at this time: Anne Marie Brown who married Charles Simoneau. They had eight children: Louise, Augustin, Francois Xavier, Joseph, Julien, Rosalie, Sophie, and Venerade. Their son Joseph born in 1822 married Angele Lacombe. They had a daughter named Helene who was born in 1850.
This is where the Simmoneau family connects with the Brown family.

Good luck in your search.

Married information: St John the Baptist Church Records, L'Erable, Illinois, page 305, entry #1587, marriage record, by Fr. John Rouquie, Witnesses: Baptiste Simoneau Sr, Joseph Simoneau, Baptiste Simoneau Jr. and Flavie Lanoue. Peter's age is 22 years.
Married record reads: "The 27 June eighteen hundred seventy five, I, the undersigned missionary priest announce the benediction nuptials of Pierre Simoneau, age 22 years, age of majority, legitimate son of J. Baptiste Simoneau and Olive Hebert, parties of the first part, and the bride Delphine Bechard, age 17 years, daughter of the legitimate marriage of Israil Bechard and the late Petronith Lanou, substitute in her place, Madam Flavie Lanou, her grandmother, The marriage was celebrated in the presence of Baptiste Simoneau, Joseph Simoneau, Baptiste Simoneau, son, and Dame Flavie Lanou.
(Signed) J. Rouquie
Interview with Ulysses and Eugene Simoneau, sons of Emile Sinoneau, grandsons of Peter Simoneau. Ulysses said his grandmother, Delphine Bechard Simoneau, would read from a new book, evening after evening, to his grandfather, Peter Simoneau. After the book was finished his grandfather could repeat the story almost word for word.
Ulysses recalled that his grandfather sang in the church choir and always held a songbook, but said he couldn't read. He played the violin left-handed and taught all his sons to play. Peter Simoneau was a carpenter and a farmer. He was a great story teller, and had short and long versions of the same story. The long version could go on for hours.
Eugene remembers when he was in about the third grade of his grandfather Simoneau telling the stories of his ancestor in France, describing the hills, trees and streams in the place where the Simoneau's lived in France. Eugene said his grandfather spoke of story telling parties on Saturday evenings. Guests would stay overnight and the host was always the storyteller.

1900 Federal Census
Federal Census for June 17 & 18, 1900, Richland City, Rooks County, Kansas
Simoneau	Peter	Delphine	Medore	Alice	Adela	Emily	Eveline	Emile	Oliver
Relationship to Family	Head	Wife	Son	Daughter	Daughter	Daughter	Daughter	Son	Son
Color and Sex	White, Male	White, Female	White, Male	White, Female	White, Female	White, FemaleWhite, Female	White, Male	White, Male
Date of Birth	Jan 1852	Jul 1858	Jan 1878	Aug 1882	Oct 1884	Dec 1886	Jan 1890	Dec 1892	Mar 1898
Age	47	41	22	17	15	13	10	7	2
Married Status	Married	Married	Single	Single	Single	Single	Single	Single	Single
Years Married	25	25	0	0	0	0	0	0	0
Number of How many children	0	12	0	0	0	0	0	0	0
Number of these children living	0	7	0	0	0	0	0	0	0
Person Birthplace	Can-Fr	Illin	Illin	Illin	Illin	Kans	Kans	Kans	Kans
Fathers Birthplace	Can-Fr	Can-Fr	Can-Fr	Can-Fr	Can-Fr	Can-Fr	Can-Fr	Can-Fr	Can-Fr
Mothers Birthplace	Can-Fr	Can-Fr	Illin	Illin	Illin	Illin	Illin	Illin	Illin
Occupation & Other Data	Farmer	N/A	Helps Father	Helps Mother	Helps Mother	School	School	N/A	N/A
Can Speak English	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	N/A
Can Read	No	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	No
Can Write	No	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	Yes	No
Owned or Rent	Owned	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A
Free of Mortgage	Free	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A
Farm or Home	Farm	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A	N/A
Volume # ?, Sheet 4, Line ?, Enumeration District ?.,
Peter is my g,great grandfather,
Research 3-16-97

The story of Maxim Desaire

Maxim Desaire

The Ninth Generation of Deserre-
Son of Frank Desaire
Father of George Desaire

Born -- January 11, 1885 at Rice Lake, Wisconsin, died April 5, 1957 at Damar, Kansas.
Married -- Blanche Newell, born April 21, 1886 at Damar, Kansas, married February 27, 1905 in St. Joseph Catholic Church at Damar, Kansas; died July 26, 1966 at Damar, Kansas.
He was baptized in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Dobie, Wisconsin. He is buried in the St. Joseph Cemetery at Damar, Kansas.

Maxim Desaire rode a paint horse all the way to Cloud County Kansas from Rice Lake, Wisconsin when he was 16 years of age. He later settled in Damar, Kansas first working for Mack Newell in a horse and mule livery stable. He then turned to farming until he lost the family farm following the Great Depression during "dirty thirties" when a severe drought settled over the prairie for a second time. Dust storms were so severe ropes were tied from the farm house door and stretched to the windmill so water could be drawn from the well and delivered to the farm house. Cattle and hogs were turned loose and roamed the prairie looking for any bit of green vegetation to eat. Most of them starved to death during the severe drought. After Maxim lost his farm ground, he fed his large family using his carpenter skills and common labor. He retained a meager income off a small farm he was able to keep.
Maxim was a severe alcoholic. While it is said that Frank Desaire never touched alcohol, Maxim gave Blanche a lifetime of heartaches because of his drinking. I recall one moment when I was about seven years of age. I found him burying a bottle of "rot gut" wine in Blanche's flower bed as she cursed him in French, "Cashaw" - meaning "the hog". He buried his bottle of rot-gut wine so Blanche would not pour his home-made wine into the hog slop bucket.
Maxim's sons were heavy drinkers too. Christmas and New Years were holidays when the whole Desaire clan would gather together at Memae's (the French word for Grandma) house. Many times the children would be herded into the north bedroom by the wives of the Desaire brothers, as the Desaire brothers had fist-fights in the living room while kicking out the windows of Blanche's home in the cold of winter.
All my cousins should appreciate this story. On Sunday mornings we would drive to town to MeMae's before going to church. Blanche would grab each kid by the hair of our heads and scrub our faces with her greasy, dirty dish rag before allowing us to enter the church. If her dish rag wasn't wet enough, she would spit on it and then scrub our face until it was squeaky clean!

Sorry to hear about your string of bad luck. When it rains it pours some time. I lost my mother to old age Feb 15, 2004. I was not with her but my sister and brother were there. Mom was in a semi-coma and my brother and sister were on each side of her bed telling stories about their younger days and were enjoying themselves laughing and carrying on. Well there is a very small space between laughter and crying and one of the stories got both of them crying. As they were wiping the tears, Mom opened her eyes and looked at them and said, "Don't cry," and drifted back off into her coma. She was still taking care of them until her last dieing breath.
We have introduced two new grandchildren since we last were in contact. Our son Tony an Lynn have a little boy Anton Maxiam (named after my wife Betty's father Anton Dome and my grandfather Maxim Desaire. He was born Sept 3, 2005 and his sister Jessie Lynn born Oct 8, 2007.
Our dauther Heather Desaire is a college professor at Kansas University. She is working on developing a vaccine for Aides and learned recently the man who heads up giving the research grants for the National Science Foundation is reviewing Heather's research for a large research grant to expand her research work. Heather is working in an area that other researchers have said would not work for about 5 years and she is about ready to begin to test a number of possible vaccines. She has developed her own company with two other women and they will market the products they develop through this company. Researchers around the world have been trying to develop a vaccine for about 25 years now without success. Heather's group has developed a technique whereby they can tell whether a product will work or not before a vaccine is every developed.
I have semi-retired from the seed business - I sell a little seed in Nebraska and I took on a company called Stoller that has some very good products. We are attempting to get the Stoller products into the largest seed companies. We have some success but not enough yet to be satisfied.
My wife Betty has 4 more years to go before she retires from being a grads school principal here in Grand Island, nebraska. We are looking forward to the day she can call it quits.
We have been doing some traveling over the last two years. We went to Paris, France two years ago with our daughter and her boyfriend. Then this summer in June we went to Rome Italy with Betty's sister and her family. Enjoyed both trips.
I am still doing the genealogy work every day almost. So far I have connected 198,850 names in my gedcom. I get a lot of inquiries from folks looking for their ancestors and I try to help them out as best I can. It is an enjoyable hobby.
Gold Bless you Larry and Betty
