His father Joseph is buried in Grave 2. Joseph's wife name was Jane and in 1940 they were living in Oklahoma City and had a daughter Delores H Leonard age 10 mos. At the time of Joseph's death they lived at 2569 South Mead, Wichita. Joseph's parents were Joseph Leonard and Daisy Hornbeek. Daisy was from Cowley Co Ks and Joseph b Indiana. Daisy may have married Arthur George Maurer who is also buried in Maple Grove Cemetery and died in 1959. Daisy's parents were George Francis Hornbeek and Mary Elizabeth Beaver

I can't find that Jane is buried with Joseph so she possibly remarried. I am trying to determine Jane's maiden name. In 1935 she was living in Memphis, Tenn and was born around 1908 in Louisiana.

I'm hoping to get an obituary which will give me the names of the survivors or if someone may have known Delores, Jane, or Joseph.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
A Kansas death certificate obtained from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Department of Health & Environment, will provide the information you want. But it will cost about $15.00 as the other reply stated. Additionally, you must be a relative.

If you Google the above, it will take you to their website where you can order online or print out a copy of the death certificate request.

It is a memory book, a sort of scrap book.

Several of the pictures, including previous classes are clipped from newspapers. Your only chance would be locating newspapers from Valley Center or Wichita, possibly on microflim at the local libraries.

Family trees on Ancestry.com say (and census records seem to bear it out) that James' father was Andrew Jackson "Andy" Toy and his mother was Amanda Jane Hatton. Both James Toy and Alice Williams were from Bath Co., Kentucky. Of course, you would need to do your own research--those trees may be incorrect.

I have no idea why they came to Kansas unless it was the reason most other immigrants did--to obtain cheap land. James and Alice appear on the 1885 Kansas State Census in Sugar Creek Twp., Miami Co. However, they returned to Bath Co., Kentucky and are there on the 1900 census. By 1910 it seems they have come back to Kansas to stay, as they are in Coffey County. They are also there on the 1915 census, and of course James dies two years after that.

Do you know if Alice had a brother named Isaac B. Williams? When James and Alice were back in Bath Co. there were several mentions in the local paper about them visiting the Isaac B. Williams family. Then there was one saying that "Mrs. Isaac Williams and children were going west to Neosho, Mo. (Jasper Co.) to join her husband." That Isaac Williams died in Jasper Co. Mo. in 1930.

I had never heard of his Oxford connection or service in the Queen's army. Interesting. I know him as partner in the family-held English company called Kansas and New Mexico Land and Cattle Company. Together with his brother Harold, they purchased land in KS, NM, CO, and UT where they ran thousands of cattle until about 1894, when Harold switched to sheep. I have suspected the change may have been influenced by Edmund's death and have been hunting anything thing that could confirm or refute that notion. I appreciate your informative post.

I found a wonder write-up about him in a Wichita paper-unfortunately it does not tell how he died:

EDMUND CARLISLE DEAD.
Englishman Who Mas the Oxford Stroke Dies at Mt. Hope.

Monday evening Edmund Carlisle of Mt. Hope, died. He owned a ranch of 2,000 acres near there. He leaves a wife and five children. Mr. Carlisle was a man with considerable history. He was an Englishman and known to every college man in Great Britain at one time. He was finely educated, having been a student at Oxford University. At that time he was a wonderful specimen of sturdy manhood and he became stroke in the Oxford crew and was one of the best the university ever had. Later he was an officer in the English army in India, and before he died he loved to tell of his experience there in the queen's service.

He came to America about ten years ago as the agent of a land syndicate which bought extensively of lands in Kansas and New Mexico, principally in that territory.

Mr. Carlisle was a thorough nimrod and the Wichita people who were entertained at his house say that he was the greatest host in the country.
(Wichita Daily Eagle, Oct. 3, 1894)

It's true, they moved to Las Vegas in 1959, when my mom moved me and my brother and sister. I was studying with Wayne in high school, so he probably died around 1966 or 7. Does that help? He was amazing! They were both great players and knew many famous people in Paris. Muriel, on the other hand, was cruel and would slam the keyboard down on my tiny fingers when I screwed up. I begged my mom to study with Wayne then. He was amazing! From there, I went to USC Music School from 1068-1972.

FIRST, Don't waste your time with the links provided by the other poster, they have no information of value. They would not show the obit for Ben Dickson, nor could you find the obit for Mary unless you knew her married name:

"I checked the list of marriage affidavits at the Midwest Historical & Genealogical Society, http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/mhgs/marriage.htm but didn't find hers."
---Those records only go to 1941.

"MHGS obit scrapbooks, http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/mhgs/obits.htm"
---This is just a listing of NAMES. I found a Mrs. Mary L. Watkins, death 13 May 1955. BUT, there is no way to tell just who this is without knowing the married name of Mary. In 1956, Mrs. Mary L. Peterka...who is she? You would have to pay $5.00 for anyone ...
--Since they start in 1955, they won't have Benjamin Dickson's.

"US Gen Archives, http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/sedgwick/obits/"
--This one is even worse. After clicking on a last name initial, it gives a listing of last names, which has date of birth, date of death and the ones I saw don't have the name of the newspaper.

"Obituary files, http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/sedgwick/archives/"
--This has lots of databases...all worthless for this search. All of the OBIT databases go back to the same one.

"Wichita Genealogical Society, www.wichetagensoc.org/requests.html "
--Gee, this link didn't work... Another one Judy.
The correct one: http://wichitagensoc.org/requests.html
--You would have to pay $5.00 to see if they could find Benjamin Dickson's.

Now, here is some very limited suggestions:

Lester died on 24 Feb 1939 in Wichita. Sarah Jane Johnston, born 22 Oct 1904, died 12 March 1975 in Wichita (You state Mary's name was not in Sarah's obit). Based on your belief/knowledge that Mary had died before Sarah, Mary's name would probably not be on Sarah's Death Certificate. However, the name of the Informant IS a "potential" lead, as it could be the husband of Mary, or one of her children. HOWEVER, I would not attempt to obtain this for a couple of reasons, Kansas' "privacy" laws, and the potential is small.

Benjamin and Sara Jane are buried in the Wichita Park Cemetery:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=di...;
I'd suggest contact of the cemetery for any of his records. Sometimes cemeteries have obits, death certificates, etc. Mary "might" have been the Informant on his death certificate. If they have name of the funeral company, contact them, they often write the obits and have records...but, we're talking 1950. But, these would be good potential leads.

My comment above: http://wichitagensoc.org/requests.html
--You would have to pay $5.00 to see if they could find Benjamin Dickson's. But, it should be done in the attempt. I do NOT like to tell people to spend money in genealogy research. IF someone qualified can't do the research for you locally, then, it would be my suggestion.

Another suggestion is the Classmates database. If Mary was born in 1928 timeframe. She "might" be listed in a high school yearbook around 1945/1947. That would not give you a married name; but many times those schools have alumni sites and reunions. One of her classmates "might" have known her marriage. This is a DIFFICULT possibility, especially without knowing where and what school, or even if she graduated. However, I am a member of classmates and will do some searches. IF I am successful, I will post, otherwise, I couldn't find anything. ... I did a number of searches on Classmates.com, without success. As suggested, a difficult potential. She may not have graduated. Or, her information was not in the listings, and/or her yearbook wasn't posted.

Her wedding "might" have been announced in a local paper....BUT, that would take quite a while to discover, unless you happen to find the newspapers had been digitized and are available.

The Kansas privacy laws make all other suggestions difficult...UNLESS you can qualify as a family member.

Hi,

You might already know this but Kansas does not publish their vital record dates. They consider them confidential and will only release copies under restricted circumstances. For more info go to Kansas Dept. health & Envirnoment, www.kdheks.gov/vital/genealogy.html and www.kdheks.gov/vital/index.html.

I checked the list of marriage affidavits at the Midwest Historical & Genealogical Society, http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/mhgs/marriage.htm but didn't find hers. You might want to contact them and see if they have any issued in the 1950's.

I also checked the Sedgwick County Engagements, Weddings & Anniversaries, http://genealogytrails.com/kan/sedgwick/engagementsindex.htm... but didn't find her.

I imagine that it's not old enough to be released at this time.

I looked for the Dickson obit online but didn't have any luck with that either. Here's the list of places I checked in case you want to take another look.

MHGS obit scrapbooks, http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/mhgs/obits.htm

US Gen Archives, http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/sedgwick/obits/

Obituary files, http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/sedgwick/archives/

Genealogy Trails, http://genealogytrails.com/kan/sedgwick/obitssurnameindex.ht...

There is a volunteer for this county at www.gengathering.com. You do need to create a user ID and password to enter this web site but access to the volunteer section is free.

If that doesn't work out, I'd contact the Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society, http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/mhgs/obits.html

OR
Wichita Genealogical Society, www.wichetagensoc.org/requests.html. Successful Searching & Happy New year!

Hi,

IF you're still looking for this obit and he died in 1818, I'm sure one wasn't published.
The following information was from a family tree on Familysearch.org It did not include Howard Miller, however. You might try posting on the Jackson Co., Missouri list to see if someone could find the obit for you:

Juanita G. Organ Miller
born June 16, 1908 Henry Co., Mo. to Leslie C. and Dora Nutt Organ
died Dec. 13, 1988 Kansas City, Mo., buried Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City
