ISAIAH LEWIS, farmer, was born in 1826, in the eastern part of Simpson County, where he grew up, and within a few hundred yards of where he now resides. His father, Leonard Lewis, was born in 1800 in South Carolina, and from thence removed with his parents to Simpson County, at the age of seven years. He was a son of Joab Lewis, Sr., who was of English descent. Leonard Lewis married in 1819, Sarah C., daughter of James and Ellen (Barnard) Williams. She was the mother of James W., Joab, Jr., John W., Isaiah, Mary E. (Hendricks), Uriah, Sarah F. (Lovelady), Enoch, Catherine (Chapman), Nancy J. (Alderson), and Melvina S. (Walton). Isaiah Lewis married, February 28, 1849, Susanna, daughter of Jeremiah and Lucretia (Nolan) Alderson. To them have been born America F. (deceased), William M. (deceased), Eliza A., Isaiah and George V. Mr. Lewis has a good English education and has been a deacon in the Cedar Grove Baptist Church for about ten years. He started in life with a farm of wild land and without a dollar, but has by his industry and perseverance increased his farm to 175 acres of well improved land in good condition. In politics he is a Democrat.
