JOHN F. F. JEWELL was born November 19, 1822, at Pageville, on Barren River, Barren County, Ky., where he was reared to manhood and has since resided. His father, Capt. George D. Jewell, was born August 4, 1797, near Lexington, Ky., where he was reared to manhood, and in 1818 located in Barren County. Here he engaged for thirty years as a freighter on the river, and amassed a handsome estate, which was greatly impoverished by the late war. He was a huntsman of great skill, and exceedingly fond of the chase, and probbly killed more deer than any other man in the county. He lost twenty-five slaves by the late war, and died in January, 1876. He was the son of Jonathan Jewell, Sr., a native of Virginia, who died in Barren County about 1840, at the age of ninety-four years, with his teeth all sound. In 1821 George D. married Merena, daughter of Fielding and Frances (Hardin) Fant of Allen County. She was born December 20, 1801, and died January 16, 1883, and their offspring are J. F. F., Louisa J. (Gibson and Winn), George W., William D., Thomas J., America (Davidson), Gustavus H. and Margaret (Claypool and Lyon). John F. F. was first married, February 8, 1853, to Eliza J., daughter of Anderson and Harriet (Gillock) Wooten, of Barren County. She was born in 1834, and died April 1, 1854. Their union was blessed by the birth of one daughter, Eliza J. (Boles). March 27, 1860, Mr. Jewell married Anna E., daughter of Dr. G. M. and Ermine (Frazier) Page, of Barren County. She was born in 1840, and died March 29, 1874, the mother of the following children: Anna C. (Claypool), Maud D., Lee F. F., Samuel P. and Willie N. At the age of fourteen years Mr. Jewell commenced clerking in his father's store, and thus continued for many years. In 1860 he began on his own account the business of general merchant, stock trader and dealer in leaf tobacco, and met with good success. In 1880
he retired from business, and is now farming and raising shorthorn stock. He owns 1,500 acres of highly improved land, and resides in his beautiful country mansion, called Beachland Place. His losses by war were heavy, including ten valuable slaves. He was formerly an old line Whig, but now affiliates with the Democratic party.
