Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Boyle County.

LEONARD GRAVES EDELEN was born at Lebanon, Marion Co., Ky., February 20, 1839. In 1860 he removed to Boyle County and engaged in farming; in 1868 he located at Big South Fork, in Casey County, where he conducted a large tannery, but at a severe financial loss, until 1877, when he removed to
Lebanon; and in 1881 he located near Alum Springs, in Boyle County where he has since resided. His father, Leonard Edelen, son of Geo. Edelen, was born at Baltimore, Md., in June, 1800, and located at Lebanon with his parents in 1804; was a very successful manufacturer and dealer in hats, at which he amassed a comfortable estate; had his residence and business house on the same ground for more than forty years; was for many years a magistrate and a member of the court of claims of Marion County; was by
all regarded as an upright man, and died on the day President Lincoln was assassinated, in 1865. His father, a Catholic, settled near Lebanon in 1804. His offspring were Robert, Benjamin, Leonard, James, Lucy (Hamilton), Mrs. Medley, Aletha (Hamilton), and Priscilla. Leonard Edelen married Susan, daughter of William Bruce, born in Virginia in 1799, moved to Lincoln County, Ky., in an early day and died December 8, 1856, and their union resulted in the birth of Sarah (McAfee), William B., Catherine (Williams), James H., Lucy (Riley), Leonard G., Robert H. (deceased), and George T. July 17, 1860, Leonard G. Edelen espoused Miss Mary E., daughter of William L. and Julietta (Maxwell) Tarkington, of Boyle County, born March 30, 1844, and to them have been born William T. (deceased), Catherine B., Georgia M., James L. (deceased), and Allen S. For the past eleven years Mr. Edelen has been engaged as a commercial traveler as the general southwestern agent of C. Buell & Son, of Waterville, N. Y., having supervision of the territory south of the Ohio River. He is comfortable and pleasantly located on a small farm of well improved and
productive land. His surroundings are agreeable and his hospitality generous. He is a member of the Southern Presbyterian Church, also of the K. of H. and a conservative Democrat.
