ELISHA M. NEWMAN is a native of Marion County, Ind., was born September 13, 1840, and is a son of Thomas and Margaret (Watson) Newman, natives of Fleming County, Ky. His grandfather, John Newman, was a native of Loudoun County, Va., and came to Fleming County, Ky., about 1785.
Jephtha Watson, maternal grandfather of Elisha M. Newman, was a Scotchman who came to Fleming County, Ky., at quite an early day. Thomas Newman was born in 1811, and is now a resident of Maysville. Elisha M. Newman was reared to farming, and came to Mt. Olivet, Ky., in 1864. He first engaged in farming and merchandising, and next, in 1874,
entered the tobacco trade, and the past year he purchased 350,000 pounds of that article, and the net profits to himself were $12,000 on this purchase, his chief selling points being Cincinnati and Louisville. His farm of 140 acres is situated one half mile from Mt. Olivet, and his
warehouse is 40x80 feet. February 2, 1860, he married Miss Minerva E. Humphreys, daughter of John Humphreys, of Fleming County, and this union has been blessed with four children: John T., Ora, Anna and Charles H. Mr. Newman is a Freemason, a Prohibitionist, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
