I am from New Zealand. I have an American skeleton that I would live out of the closet!
The family story goes that Eustace Frank Allen (b.1846? Kentucky, Tennessee) jumped ship in Timaru, NZ sometime prior to 1877 (when he married).
Unfortunately this is the extent of my information on him. He was something of a black sheep, not accepted by his in laws and when his wife, Annie, died in childbirth (around 1882) he was shut out of his 3 children's lives as well by his mother in law.
He died in 1896, aged 50 years. No other details were given on his
death certificate - supposedly because no one around him knew the
details of his parents or of his marriage and children. It does state
that he was from Kentucky, USA and that he'd been in NZ for around 20
years. Curiously, the death certificate states he was a teacher, but
we have been unable to substantiate this claim (records only started
in 1929 in Kentucky).
Considering he was in his 20's when he arrived in New Zealand, I wonder whether he had a wife and children in USA prior to his departure?
If anyone has any information on Eustace OR more broadly on the Allen family of Kentucky I would be so very grateful!
