Mock Funeral Home made arrangements. And yes there are two seperate death certificates for 1920 - one Ruth in your query clearly stating buried Willard, Kentucky and the other Ruth Virginia Johnson buried in Ashland Cemetery.

I really appreciate this information, it tell me that I want to look in Willard, Carter, Ky for the cemetery.

That is incredible that 2 Ruth Johnson would be born and died in 1920. Ruth V Johnson is a different one than the one I want. Mine was Ruth Frances Johnson born 28 Jan 1920 and died 17 Apr 1920 at Hill Top in Ashland.
Jean

I have a death certificate for Ruth Johnson that states she was buried in Willard, Ky. They lived in Ashland and I can't image why they would bury in Willard which is Carter Co. Could it be the Willard Cemetery in Ashland? I don't even know if there is a Willard Cemetery in Ashland or what their connect would be to the Willard name. Is there a Willard Cemetery in Ashland?

I just discovered that my great-great grandmother was Margaret Marrow, (full or part American Indian?) born 1861/62 in Missouri or Illinois (or ?), witnessed the burning of Atlanta in 1864, married George Simonson (Evans?), her husband or father was a horse trader, by 1920 she was a servant in a private house in Dayton, Ohio; died between 1920 and 1930. I need proof she was American Indian.

wonder if the Lawrence county Historical society would have and obit for your Andrew J. Brown who died March 6th, 1896, Steece, Lawrence county Ohio. Mabe they know the newspapers that were in circulation at that time and you could look through them on microfilm, or mabe someone has already composed a book on this and they may know more about it..

Mabe Andrew J. Brown was traveling in 1880 and that is why you cant find him, or like you say ,may be spelled wrong. I think I had it wrong again on your Calvin M. and thinking wife was Lucinda when it was Estelle. I dont know your Brown line very well, but trying to learn in case there is a connection to my Brown line.

Hope you find what you are looking for and I will certainly post something here if I should find Andrew J. Browns obit.

The Lucinda I found as married in 1880 but without her husband on the form was married to Andrew J. Brown...he is the missing husband. His death year of 1896 was mentioned elsewhere in this thread and is attached to him every tree I viewed, but I don't know the source for that year.

I have Calvin's wife as Estella. I did find their 1900 record, and they were in Ashland, District 15, page 79, starting with line 60.

The cemetery was photographed - every standing stone a couple of years ago as part of the cemetery board project. I just handed them all in to the library. If you stop in there Jim Kettel head of the department would burn you a cd if you don't get to all the stones while visiting. Might save you some time.

The prisoners keep the cemetery mowed.

If I'm not mistaken it was also called the Hicks Cemetery up at Summit. The family story goes that my gg-granpa Jesse Hicks bought some of the land there and then as the story goes in our family sold some of it back to the prison.

My cousin still goes up there to tend to our family up there. And you are right, prisoners do go up there to tend to the graves. Unfortunately we haven't been able to go up there for a few years now. Hearing about Summit brings back a lot of memories for us :-) Deb
Am trying to find the grave site of my Great-Grandmother Rosa Sparks Young. She was married to George w. Young. She died in Martin Co. Kentucky, however, on a certified copy of her death certificate is states she was sent to Ashland for burial. It does not say which cemetery or the name of the funeral home. Her Death certificate has her name as Mrs. George W.Young. She died in June 1912. I have checked the Ashland Cemetery, Golden Oaks and RoseHill without any luck. I have looked at Mark Meinhart's Boyd Co. sight through all of the cemetery listings and still nothing..
Any leads would be extremely appreciated.

Forgot to mention that I have a Joseph Calvin Brown b. 1857 in Eastern Kentucky and was raised in the Boyd co. Ky area. Parents John & Matilda Brown. John son of isham Brown Sr. Isham had son , Isham brown Jr. who had a son Benjamin Franklin Brown. who married Rebecca Jane Bartram, which was a first cousin to Nancy Bartram who married Benjamin Brown... dont know if there is a conection to our Browns, would like to know somehow. Isham Brown SR. lived in the Wythe, Smyth , Montgomery co.,VA. He was b. ca. 1793 VA or NC. Him and wife Christina Brown migrated to Greenup/Boyd co.KY by 1850.

The Andrew J. Brown that I listed being the son of Benjamin and Nancy Bartram Brown had several children. ONe of them Stephan Brown b. ca. 1834, may have been born in Grayson co., VA. ...Grayson is locasted a county below Wythe and SMyth co. of VA. My Isham Sr. Brown and your Benjamin Brown must have been in VA. and not too far off from each other at one time before migrating on to the Boyd KY and Cabel WV area....intersting but no proof related.

Lucinda husband Calvin M. Brown died 1936, in Boyd KY., so you right, she must not have been widowed in 1880. Sometimes they would go off for weeks back then to a job, or hunt , and he may be listed working or living with someone else like a close relative. Did you find him and Lucinda on the 1900 census?
Somehing else interesting was the ISham Brown Jr. married into the Robinett family too. He was married 2 times, This Brown family married into the Bartrams and Robinette family that lived in the Boyd/Greenup area... or mabe the Bartrams and Robinettes were from WV and Ohio too. The names of the children of your Benjamin Brown and Nancy Bartram Brown are similar to the names running down Isham Browns childrens line. My John Brown had a son Andrew Jackson and Joseph Calvin(mine). Isham Brown Sr. had a John (mine), James, and possibly a George(not sure on the George). Isham Jr. had a son Benjamin Franklin.

Missing from WWII Honor Roll?

If anyone has tried to assemble a WWII Honor Roll of casualties from Boyd Co., and you located a serviceperson in your records who is *not* on "official" lists, please post them in this thread to help other researchers. I will start with two fellows who are not on a NARA list or a Boyd tribute I found, and they are not on the comprehensive list posted at the WKYU-PBS site.

Handley Riffe Ross (20 Sep 1922 - 7 Oct 1944, Army) KIA in Germany. Buried in Ross Cemetery. Son of Paul & Edna (Bolt) Ross.

Warren Guy Bolt (18 Sep 1915 - abt 1944, Navy, originally MIA while serving on a carrier in the Pacific, later revised to KIA). Son of Clyde M. Bolt (Edna's cousin) and Willia (Ross, Paul's sister) Bolt.

These two young men were born in Boyd Co. and were cousins.

http://www.thebookplace.org is another good place to search for burials in Boyd, but I didn't find her in their database. I have sometimes found death certificates where Ashland funeral homes were used even when the burial was in a different county, such Lawrence County, Ohio or Lawrence County, KY.

You might try here: http://www.lawrencecountyohio.com for their list of cemetery readings.

On the 1880 Census record, Lucinda is noted as "married," not "widow," but I cannot locate her husband anywhere else on the Census. I looked for misspellings, prisons, and entries for all states, but no one matched. If he is listed somewhere, his name may be very badly spelled or not legible. He may just have been left out due to being somewhere on a job and thinking he'd be counted at home.

In the family of Calvin M., there is a young Estella born about 1915 on the 1920 and 1930 Census (Ashland). One time, she is marked daughter, and the other is granddaughter. Does anyone know more about her, if she married, etc.?

Just to add to your helpful posts, Lucinda Handley was born 1825 in Virginia (?WV) to Samuel Handley (b. 1795 in VA, d. July 1855 Lawrence Co., Ohio) and Elizabeth Barger (b. July 1800, Monroe, VA (WV), d. 1880 in Lawrence Co., Ohio). Many of this family Handleys moved from WV into Lawrence Co., and one of them, Christopher (m. Sarah Adaline Campbell) moved to Athens County, Ohio, then to Boyd County, KY. One of his daughters was Amanda Jane Handley Robinett Bolt, second (and last) wife of William David Bolt of Boltsfork, Boyd County, KY.

I haven't explored the Robinett(e) line much, but Manus Alexander Robinette (1857, Wise, VA, to 1889, Boyd, KY) was buried in the Fannin Cemetery in Boyd. I have seen a few other items with Robinette/Fannin kinship. I think this branch of Fannins has a large presence in Lawrence, OH. Manus's father Elias was born in Wyethe, VA, in 1830, and also lived in Wise and Russel before relocating to Greenup, KY. His wife Julia Wells was born 1837 in Grayson, VA. Manus was the first husband of Amanda Jane Handley Robinette Bolt (my g-granny).
