MRS. W. H. LESLIE, resident of Ashland, early 1900s

While perusing my local antique mall, I came across two old cardboard fans which belonged to Mrs. W. L. LESLIE. Both fans were from Ashland funeral homes. I remember one was a picture of Christ in Gethsemane. Mrs. LESLIE's address was written on the back in (I presume) her handwriting and was, if I recall, something like 2156 Carter Ave.

I have researched it a little bit on the census and there was a Wade Leslie and wife, Hattie, living in Ashland ca. 1930. They had two children, at least, one being Wade, Jr. and the other, Kathleen (again, I *think.*) I'm doing this all from memory.

I am not related to this family (that I know of), but it always bothers me when I see personal items at flea markets and antique stores such as memorabilia and especially pictures which family might be interested in.

I would be happy to buy these 2 fans (2.50/apiece) if they are still available by the time this is read, and mail them to any interested family member. You never know when someone is looking for something.

Vance C. NEESE descendants

Please help if you can!

I am looking for descendants of Vance C. NEESE. who died in Ashland, Boyd Co. KY on Feb. 14, 1977. Was this man the same Vance C. NEESE who was born in Wythe or Tazewell Co VA ca 1897?

The Vance C. NEESE I am interested in was the son of William Grant and Emma May (HEDRICK) NEESE who were married ca 1893. Emma May was my aunt. She died just a few months after Vance was born. I believe that William Grant NEESE then may have married a Roxie M. UMBERGER.

I have a photo of William Grant NEESE with his second wife and with Vance (age about 5) and an infant daughter named May.

Would like to contact any descendants of this Vance C. NEESE to share the picture that I have and to, hopefully, find a picture of my aunt Emma May HEDRICK NEESE.

I am hoping that someone in Ashland or Boyd Co. will contact any descendants they may know of and ask them to contact me - (812-935-6693) or alendman@bluemarble.net.

Thanks so much for any help you can give!

Allison

Greetings all,

I have a DC that has "Coroner's Report" written in the "nature of death" area. The death is listed as an accident but the family has always been suspicious and the immediate family would never go into much detail.

What I'm wondering is how long would a Coroner's Report be kept?

This DC is from September 1, 1933 in Boyd Co. Kentucky for Bernard Emerson Karnap.

FANNING/ FANNIN/ FANNON ANCESTRY
FANNING DNA PROJECT

A DNA Project was initiated in 2006 for the surname of Fanning. This project also includes various spellings of this surname, such as: Fannin, Fannon, Fannan, and other variations. As of February 25, 2008, we have 21 participants in the project covering four different lineages and reaching from the USA to Ireland, Spain and Australia.

The overall goal of the project is to connect as many branches of Fannings as possible. In order to test for this project, a male DNA sample, preferably the oldest male with surname of Fanning (again any variant) should test. A cheek swab is sent to the testing company and within six to nine weeks, in most cases, results are available.

The project uses the Y-chromosome test. The Y-chromosome is passed from father to son for generations. If you have spent any time researching your family history, you have probably reached a point where you cannot identify earlier ancestors. Perhaps you have documented 3 generations, or 6, or 8. But, at some point the trail grows cold. DNA can be a wonderful addition to your research, pointing you in the right direction, connecting you to new researchers and opening new doors. The Fanning DNA Project is intended to help provide additional answers to those questions. DNA testing is not a magic wand that can solve every mystery or answer every question. It is another tool that can complement our search of written and oral records, graveyards, etc.

The Y-DNA tests require a male with the surname of Fanning, etc. Only males can test for this project. Females can also participate by encouraging male Fannings, Fannins, etc. to test or by contributing to the financial costs of another’s test. On the Fanning website under the recruitment tab there is a link for contributions. Family Tree controls the "trust" accounts for each surname. A person can donate for a specific test such as Middleton Fanning descendants or just donate to the general fund. The link is:

http://www.familytreedna.com/contribution.html

For more information about this exciting DNA Project visit the following websites:

www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/f/fanning or www.familytree.com

You may, also, contact the Fanning Project Administrator, Cathy Stoppel at: pstoppel@wvi.com.

We hope that you or others you know will join our project. The more tests that are made, the more effective the results of the project will be. There are many genealogical mysteries that may ultimately be affected by this new scientific tool. Thank you for taking the time to read this posting.

Pat Fannin, a Fanning DNA Project participant
jpfannin@hotmail.com
CWVE HOWELL, William 1845/KY married Elizabeth Kate Dobbs 1867/England died 1917/WA

Pvt. William Howell joined the 45th KY Infantry on 7/14/1863 at Catlettsburg, Boyd Co. KY and was discharged 12/24/1864 at Catlettsburg. He stated in his pension records that the was born 10/30/1845 at Greenup Co. KY His brother Thomas Howell also joined the 45th KY infantry. William death record gives his parents as EVAN HOWELL & ANN WILLIAM but I cannot find those names in KY 1840 or 1850? Would love to connect with anyone researching this family and share what I have.

I cannot find William or his brother Thomas Howell in KY at all nor can I find Evan or Anna Howell in KY. The first time I find William Howell for sure is in 1900 in Granby, Newton Co. MO. I checked, KY, MO, IL, Colorado, Wyoming, WI.

1880 Joplin, Jasper Co. MO James Dobbs 1841/England machinist, Susan 1843/England, James R. 1865/England, Kate 1866/England (this should be Elizabeth Kate b/1866 that married William Howell in 1887 at Jasper, MO.),Thomas 1870/MO, Henry 1872/MO, Bessie 1880/MO.

Elizabeth Kate Dobbs married William Howell 5/7/1887 at Jasper Co. MO

1900 Granby, Newton Co. MO William Howell 10/1846/KY miner, Elizabeth K 4/1867/England had 2 chd 2 liv, De Etta 1/1888/CO, James W. 1891/New Mexico

1910 Spokane, Spokane Co. WA William Howell 1846/KY, Katie 1867/England married once 2 ch 2 liv, De Etta 1888/CO, James 1892/New Mexico.

William Howell died 12/11/1917 at Providence Hospital in Everett, Snohomish Co. WA giving his address as the hospital. The hospital was informant so no idea why family was not noted as James W. his son was noted in bio in Everett, said he was married born 10/31/1845 in KY and that his parents were EVAN HOWELL b/Wales and ANNA WILLIAM b/Wales and he was a miner. Could not find parents in KY 1840 or 1850 to prove their names.

Elizabeth Kate Dobbs Howell remarried to a Ormma M. Holcomb 10/20/1924 in Washington Co., OK but I cannot find either in 1920 census in OK. James her son was in Yolo Co., CA in 1920 cannot find De Etta Howell Graves so maybe she was with her.

Elizabeth K. Holcomb requested CW pension from her first husband Wm. Howell service with 45th KY Infantry when her 2nd husband died 5/23/1929 in Dewey, OK.

Elizabeth K. Holcomb died 2/21/1936 at Santa Cruz Co. CA and the informant was her son J.W. Howell living in Watsonville. Her death record stated her father was J. Bodds (but it was really Dobbs) b/England. James said she was born in Halston, England 4/22/1867.
Everett Daily Herald
12/30/1917

William Howell died Yesterday afternoon at the Providence hospital after an operation on Monday. He was the father of J.W. Howell, physical director of the Everett Young Men’s Christian association, and now acting secretary. William Howell was 72 years of age. He was a Civil war veteran, and the local G.A.R. will have charge of his funeral which will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from Challacombe’s chapel. Howell had spent most of his life in Colorado and Wyoming, in the days when that territory was the “farthest west”. He was a noted scout and hunter and took part in many Indian battles. He numbered among his close friends, Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill, and other famous Indian scouts. Besides his son, he leaves a widow, who resides in Everett, and a daughter, Mr. W.L. Graves, of Nelson, B.C., whom is expected arrive in Everett tomorrow. N.B. Challacombe is in charge of funeral arrangements. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. The G.A.R. and the Women’s Relief corps will conduct special exercises at the funeral. Howell was a member of the Forty-fifth Kentucky regiment of mounted infantry during the civil war.

I am looking for information on my ancestor John Henry Wallace (b. 1842) and who married Sarah Alice Vermillion (b. 1847 in Lawrence, Ohio). My understanding is that they had ten boys and one girl (Frank, Charles (from whom I am descended), George, Clinton, Lafayette, William, John, Fred, Harry, Hattie and Ray).

I am looking for two pieces of information:

1. I do not know John Henry Wallace's parents.

2. I believe that John was married before Sarah Alice. He has a son Lincoln who was born in 1865, and on the 1880 census, it lists his mother's birthplace as being Kentucky. Any information on Lincoln and his mother would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

George Lewis Kazee, Ersula Jaynes, William Colbert, and Mary Jones

Hi! I'm doing research on my Boyd Co., KY, ancestors, and I was wondering if anyone out there had information on the following individuals from my family tree. George Lewis KAZEE (or KESEE) was born on January 13, 1866, in Boyd Co., KY, and died on July 29, 1931, in Ashland, KY. He married Ersula JAYNES (or JANES) in 1890. She was born on September 18, 1866, in Greenup Co., KY, and died on December 5, 1942, in Ashland, KY. George's death certificate lists his parents as John KAZEE/KESEE and Emily DIXON. Ersula's death certificate lists her parents as Henry JAYNES/JANES and Mary DARBY. The 1880 U.S. Census lists George Lewis KAZEE/KESEE living with his parents in Bloom Furnace, Scioto Co., OH, but I believe they only lived in Ohio for a short time. The other individuals I'm looking for William COLBERT and Mary JONES, husband and wife. I have no information on them, but believe that they lived in Boyd Co. The Kazee's and Colbert's were the parents of my great-grandparents, Earl Kazee, Sr., and Pearl Colbert. Thank you for your time and please e-mail me if you can help...

Hello,
I am trying to find the graves of Drury Tolliver, his wife Mahala and his sister Tabitha. Drury/Drew/Dru died 1926. Mahala died 1913 and Tabitha died 1916, all died in Johnson Co., Flat Gap area.
I went to Flat Gap a few weeks ago, but had no luck in locating the graves. No one that I talked to in that area could help me. I plan to go back again sometime and give it another try.
I noticed by the Census that some of the family ended up in Boyd County, am hoping some of the family will see this and give me some idea of locating the Tolliver graves.
My great-grandmother was a Tolliver and a sister to Drury.
I have been in touch with Drury's granddaughter, but she not been there in years. She's in her 90s and lives down south.
If anyone knows any thing that might help, you can post a message here or e-mail me at clariceky@yahoo.com

Any help greatly appreciated.
Clarice Kelly

I'm searching for any information on the parents and siblings of Nancy MILLER who married Levi STEED on Aug. 28, 1836 in Wood Co., (W)VA. Levi STEED, b. abt 1800 in PA, was the s/o Aaron STEED and grandson of Peter STEED. Nancy MILLER may have been Levi's second wife.
Levi is listed on the 1840 census for Wood Co., (W)VA with three males under 15 and three females under 15 in his household. An older female (age 40-50) may be his wife, Nancy.
Before 1860, Levi moved to Boyd Co., KY and appears in Ashland on the 1860 census. Other STEEDS in Ashland are Aaron, George, Henry and Levi STEED, Jr. I would appreciate any help with this family.

I would like to find a picture of the old cigar factory located in Ashland. It used to be located where the bowling alley is at now. It was run by my great-great-grandfather in the early 1900's. He passed away in 1925. His name was Casper Henry Forson. He arrived in America from Germany in the late 1880's so it would be dated sometime between those years. I would appreciate and help that anyone would be willing to offer.

Thank you,
Debbie

Looking for information on an Edna Johnson, lived in Fairview, Kentucky (not sure which county) and attended church in Westwood in the 1920s. Probably born 1900-1910 or so. I have her 1927 diary . . . speaks about a man named Hager Cartwell (?--handwriting is hard to decipher) and their on-again, off-again relationship. No relation--and sounds silly--but I'd like to know what happened to her and if I find her family, I'd love them to have transcripts of her diary.
