The last query for the day, I promise! I'm also looking for lineage information on the Snipes, the most elusive characters of all of them in my Carter County ancestors! Virutally no record of Willie Snipes (1892-1980) or his father Lilburn (1867-1944) is to be found, and I suspect that's just how they wanted it. I know from talking with my great-grandfather Willie "Poppy" Snipes when I was young that he ran a still somewhere in western Carter County, and he boasted about the fact that he had never done an honest day's work in his life.
Family legend has it that the path into the field where Willie kept his still was worn over a foot deep from all the traffic over the years. The last of Lilburn's four marriages was to Della Henderson, and their son Willie married Vina Webb. Through the Hendersons, I've traced back to early colonial Virginia, and through the Webbs I've gotten all the way back to mid 1500's England, but Snipes hunting has proven to be a much trickier game!
