Need Info. on Davy's Run in WIllard & Carroll Family Who Lived There:

I have some information but looking for more on Hattie Carroll-Hicks - if any of this is familiar to anyone please let me know.

I was told by a cousin that Hattie was born in 1876 - the daughter of James Carroll & Sarah Adams-Carroll. Hattie's mother supposedly had 8 children, but we only have names of a few of them: her brothers were Tom, Andrew Jackson & Will (don't have info. on Hattie's other - siblings). I was also told that her mother died in 1901 after being struck by a train.

Hattie's father James was from North Carolina and rode with the Confederate army w/Cantrell. My g-grandfather Martin (Mart) VanBuren Hicks married (1st marriage) Hattie on 19 March 1896 on Davy's Run at the home of her father James(or John) B... Carroll (near the school ??) Hattie was born abt. 1876 and died abt. 1901 - They also had two children Luther C. (Cecil)(DOB: 08 Dec 1896 & DOD: 15 Apr 1977) &
Myrtle (DOB: 4 Feb 1899 & DOD: 30 Jan 1980) I am looking for more background info. on Hattie's family. I was wondering about land records or other information that would include any purchases made by Hattie's father John or maybe other siblings.

Also looking for information on a church - the First Christian Church in Willard. We went by there several years ago...I was told there was a cemetery behind the church...trying to find out if Hattie could possibly be buried there...if not wondering if she could be up on
Davy's Run...where her family home was. - Deb

William Henry Craig & Laura Leddingham/Leadingham

Does ANYONE know ANYTHING, good or bad, about this couple? I am not certain of Laura's spelling of her last name. They lived in Willard, Carter County, Ky. Their children(not sure of order of birth) were Gladys, Violet, Geneva, Harold, and my father's mother, Lucille, born on 11/4/1912 in Willard, Ky. At some point some or all the family moved to Gary, Indiana, some called it East Chicago, Indiana. I do know my father was born in Gary or East Chicago, Indiana in 1937 with Laura's address on Kentucky Ave.(ironic street name) listed on his birth certificate.
I know Gladys married Will Doege, Violet married Wally Reiner and Harold died at age 19 from a drowning, atlthough I don't know what year that was since I don't know when he was born. I'm not sure who Geneva married. By the way, depending on the story heard or believed, Harold was murdered since he was supposedly a competition swimmer and his death was a result of drowning.
Can anyone help with any info at all?
Thanks,
Lynda M.

I had the opportunity this week to finally visit the land that the McDavid family has called home for so long. I was amazed at all of the beautiful hills and how friendly everyone I spoke with was. I have a refound excitement about picking back up with my research on the McDavid family...even being from the "California McDavids" (often spelled "Mac" and not "Mc".

I have posted the photos of my visit to the two McDavid Cemeteries, I hope they may be of some use to you. If you have anything you'd like to share, I would greatly appreciate it!

I am definitely going to plan another trip to Carter County and spend a few days doing research and talking to kin still in the area!

Info for ggf Martin VanBuren HICKS, d. ca. 1944, Grayson, Carter Co., KY?

I'm trying to locate some information on my great-grandfather Martin Van Buren Hicks, who died in a Grayson Hospital (exact date unkown). Elder family members have only been able to give approximate date of death as between 1944-1945 and they remember that the weather was warm. His widow would have been the former Victoria Taylor who died in 1959.

I was told that the courthouse in Grayson that housed vital records had burned down a long time ago, so I'm not sure where else to turn. I am thinking that in his obituary (if there is one) - it may have mentioned that previously he served as sheriff of Carter County in the mid 1920's.

I would appreciate any suggestions that may help me find this information.

Thank you.
Deb

Article regarding Madison Flake's 100th birthday

The Leader and the Kalkaskian, Kalkaska County, Michigan
PUBLISHED: Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Madison Flake celebrates his century mark

By Brooks Vanderbush
Staff Writer

KALKASKA - In 1908, Henry Ford introduced his Model T to the world, William Howard Taft was elected president and Mother's Day was celebrated for the very first time.

It was also that year on June 18 that Kalkaska County resident Madison Flake was born.

Flake was born in Greenup County, Kentucky to Michael William and Effie (Arthur) Flake. Flake enjoyed life in that quiet county until 1920 when his family moved to Carter City, Kentucky. Life in Kentucky could be quite hard at that time. Money and work were scarce and Flake has woven tales of how he and his brothers were forced to ride the rails throughout the country just to find enough food to survive.

By the mid-1920s, Flake had made his first trip to what was soon to be his home state. (Michigan) He traveled with his brother James to work at the lumber camps in Newberry.

In 1937, Flake returned to Kentucky to bring his parents and siblings to Montmorency County where the family spent years working in the timber industry. Michigan agreed with the family as evidenced by the fact that they remained for the rest of their lives.

Flake enlisted in the U.S. Army Nov. 24, 1942 and served until he was discharged and married in 1945. Flake married Opal (Sparks) Short Feb. 28, 1945 in Mancelona. The marriage produced five children, three sons and two daughters. Flake also raised a step daughter from the age of two.

Flake was a farmer on Twin Lakes Road until the mid-1950s. At that time Flake ventured to Grand Rapids to work for McInerney Spring and Wire. He spent the next 25 years devoted to that position. His family remained in the Twin Lakes area, looking forward to Flake's ride home every weekend after a long, hard week in Grand Rapids.

Longevity seems to run in the family. Flakes father, Michael, died on March 11, 1979 in Munising just shy of his 106 birthday. Flake's brother Max passed away at the age of 93 and sister Thelma just recently passed away in April at the age of 97.

Flake continues to reside in the Twin Lakes Road home that has been his for decades. His son Lonnie has lived with him since the mid-1980s, always ready to offer dad a helping hand about the house.

If you see Madison Flake out and about, shake his hand, and wish him a happy century.

Brooks Vanderbush can be reached at bvanderbush@michigannewspapers.com.

My father, Madison Flake born June 18, 1908 in Greenup Co, Ky and moved with his parents to Carter City, Carter Co, Ky in the early 1920's will be 100 years old on June 18th. I have decided to do a card shower for him again. He has been in and out of the hospital lately and in failing health. He loves to get mail so if anyone is interested in sending him a card for his 100th birthday, please email me at kalkaska43@yahoo.com. It has been many years since he has been back to his birthplace but remembers Greenup and Carter counties very fondly.

Pauline Hammond
Looking for more info regarding the family of Andrew Jackson Arden, born abt 1847 in VA, moved to Carter County area with his wife Elizabeth Taylor Arden. Had a son named Charles that was born 1875 in VA so the move obviously took place after 1875. They do show up in the 1880 Old Town/Greenup/Kentucky Federal Census. Charles eventually married a Rachel McGuire and they had several children that seem to have literally vanished. Arthur (b1903), Luther (b 1906), Everett V (b 1914), Edith Esther (b 1916), Robert Edgar (b 1920), Alvin J (b 1923), Virginia L (b 1925). Annone know anything about these folks?

My Great Grandfather Arthur Wright was born in December 1889 in Willard, Ky according to his WWI draft registration.
He married Louise(a) Bennett in 1908 in Whitley Co. Kentucky. I have tons of info on the Bennett line but I have hit a wall on the Willard, Ky Wright's that Arthur comes from. Any Wright info that might tie to him would be a great help.

The past few weeks there has been a lot in the Lexington Newspapers about the Eastern State Hospital and the Eastern State Cenetery. The State is wanting to build a new hospital at a new location and they are wanting to move all the people buried in the Eastern State Cemetery. They estimate that 10,000 people are buried there, We the Eastern State Cemetery Group are trying to save this historical cemetery that dates back to about 1823, mary Hatton and myself are pulling death certificates daily trying to find the names of all the peoople that are buried here as the hospital has no record of who is buried there or in what grave,We would like each of you to write your congress person to ask them to save this cemetery. Enclosed is the web site of the Eastern State Cemetery & Hospital grounds http://kykinfolk.com/esh/. look it over and click on Mary Hatton to give a comment and let her know that you will help support the cemetery committe efforts to save the cemetery. There are a lot of people from Carter County buried there.
Not so famous Lamberts

I know my family was not very famous however I am wondering if anyone has any information on the following persons:

Samual/Samuel Lambert - 1944-about 1910. He was a Veteran of the War Between the States and his name is inscribed on a monument somewhere in Carter Co. Who where his parents and siblings?
Phenita/Fynetta/Finettie, and somestimes Annette Lambert his wife daughter of Burrell and Elizabeth Lambert.
The great mystery surrounding these people, my g--g-grandparents is their daughter Elizabeth who married John Milton Lambert. (yes another Lambert) I believe Samuel and Phneita were cousins however I find no record for John Milton so I do not know if he was another relative or not. John's father according to the 1920 cesnus was from VA and his mother KY and he was born in KY. I would hope he was not another close relative but I am not counting it out. (There is no serious genetic diseases in subsequent generation. We seem to be very intelligent and capable people.)
I would like to find out information mainly for my 82-year-old father. He loves my research but would like to know more about his beloved grandfather John Milton Lambert. My father has been ill and hospitalize twice in the last two weeks and I hope to find this before it is too late for him. My mother has Alzheimers so I cannot travel to do my research. I am counting on you good folks to help me. Donna
