I too would like to find the death date for Aley and George. I am unsure of her first name, I have found it listed as Aley, Asa and Alice Ann. Her parents are buried in the Old Willow Springs cemetery. I wonder if George and Aley are buried there or if they moved away after 1910. They married in 1876, I have never found any children listed for them. Sorry I can't give you any more information. If you find any additional information on them please email me at pamgrissom@scrtc.com

1840 Census for Liberty - Cooley, Minor, Moore, Willis, White?

Does anyone have information about James C. Minor who is in Liberty, Casey County, KY in the 1840 census? What about the folks near him on the page?

He is mixed in with a bunch of my families on the same page of the Liberty, Casey Co, KY census pages 45 and 47 in Ancestrys version:
- John Cooley and Thomas Cooley (I suspect they are related to the next person - Elizabeth (Cooley) Moore)
- Elizabeth Moore (mother of Nancy Jane, George, William and John - maiden name was Cooley)
- James White - would love to know more about him too
- James C MINOR
- - Next Page --
- William White - again, would love more information
- Henry Willis (Son of William Willis and brother of Parthena Willis, who married John Moore... son of Elizabeth (Cooley) Moore)

Nancy Jane Moore (daughter of Elizabeth Cooley Moore) married Eli White, my GGG-Grandfather, and I am trying to figure out how else he fits into this group of folks in Casey, KY.

I'm at a brick wall with Eli White, so I have been investigating his children. One of their kids is Frances White (sometimes listed as Delia Frances White) who married Peter Clavier. They had a son named Charles Franklin Clavier. Charles married a Pearl Ann Mills... Pearls mother is Martha Minor. Martha's father is William Guthrie Minor. William Guthrie Minor is married to a Minerva MOORE (ding!). Williams father is James C Minor - and I am back to the same set of folks in Liberty, Casey, KY!!!!

I feel like I am circling around the same families and something really obvious is just waiting to be discovered. I KNOW there is a connection... I'm just not figuring it out.

Again, here is the flow:
Elizabeth Cooley married Henry Moore
- Nancy Jane Moore married Eli White and had...
-- Delia Frances White who married Peter Clavier and had...
--- Charles Franklin Clavier who married Pearl Ann Mills
--- Pearls parents were:
-- Martha MINOR and Thomas Mills
- Marthas parents were William Guthrie MINOR and Minerva Moore
Williams father was James C MINOR... and we are back to Liberty, Casey County, KY!

These folks all seem to have migrated from Kentucky to Illinois on to Kansas and even to California then back to Illinois and beyond.

There is more... but I feel like my brain is melting just explaining that part :)

So, does anyone have ideas about how to connect the rest of the dots?

Thanks!

I am also researching the Samuel L. Miller family of Casey Co. Ky. he was briefly married to my GG Grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Butler Smith in 1909 in Casey Co. KY. He was born ca 1835 and I believe he died between 1910 and 1916. He, my GG Grandma and an adopted child of hers Addie Lee Smith can be found in the 1910 Casey Co. census in Dunneville. I am searching for Samuel's death date and where he is buried. His children ...Samantha A. , Sarah E., Benjamin F., Martha W., Samuel T., Perry N., Sophronia B. and Andrew G., James W., and Lucy (not sure about last two). This Samuel stated on his marriage bond to Sarah E. Butler Smith that it was his third marriage. Any help would be much appreciated , please contact via email mfair@kc.rr.com.....thanks Marilyn M Fair

to that area of Casey County and all along what is now hwy 127.My family is the Bartholet Lee group.I am not so sure what drew folks to that area in such numbers. It seemed to really pick up in the early 1850's and again after the Civil War. That is when my crew moved.I'm afraid I'm not up on most of the other families though.Have you checked with the library in Liberty? They have family files and some really good resources and county histories. They are on line, accessible and eager to help.

Thank you for your reply and information you found. The only thing I have to go on is the DC of Mary E. Shepherd. Incidentally, the spellings on the name Shepherd could be Sheppard, Shepperd, Shepard etc, but I'm sure you would have seen any with those spellings. Thank you again.
This is a pretty old thread, so am not sure if all of you are out there ... but figure I will give this a shot.

I am descendant from an Alonzo Caldwell Weddle who was born in 1872 or 1873. On his Masonic Lodge application (in Benton County Indiana), I am told that he put his place of birth as Caintown, KY. I am thinking that this is near Cains Store, KY which is on the Casey county border w/ Pulaski county. By 1880, I believe I see Alonzo living with Samuel D Vaughn (mis-spelled as Vaught in the census). There is a story of his running away and I am not sure if the rest of the family was broken apart or not.

I am seeking information about Alonzo's parents and/or siblings, but don't have a ton of information. Below is what I suspect to be true:

- He had a brother, John Perry Weddle, who moved to Oklahoma.
- He had a sister, Mary F Weddle, who I believe moved to DeWitt Illinois and married Samuel Argo. From the Mary's obituary, it sounds like she was born in 1860 and left KY to live when her aunt when she was only 9 yrs old. And, it also indicates that Mary's (and thus Alonzo's) father was "John", and there there was one other brother that I wasn't aware of and 2 more sisters that I am not aware of.

My father recalls that Alonzo's mother was a Sarah Hudson, but this has not been proven through records and has only been passed through word of mouth.

If anyone in the Casey/Pulaski area believe they may be able to shed some light on this family that was in the area in the 1860s-1880s, I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Thx.
Randy

I believe the Salem Cemetery abstraction, and church record on the cemetery, that is often quoted is the one that I did back in 1984. Obviously it is time to update it. I had planned on getting back this late summer to do and am afraid I may have waited to late for this year. I am in the process of scanning (that old typed copy and not on a computer) that 1984 list and posting it on the Casey County cemetery site. I hope to complete this in the next month. Please note that the Russell County Public Library has a copy in their files which one could make copies of and the Casey Library should have one as well.

I wrote you at Babe@netdirect.net, but it came back & noticed on the Casey Co.,Ky. message board, that you didn't want your email address to be known, so hope you find my message under this subject listing.
Would you have any idea if Casey Co. has any death records for the year 1884? I'm wondering if there might be a death certificate/record for Alford M. Jacobs who died in Casey Co.,Ky. on Aug. 9, 1884 & if so, if his parent's names might be given or named on it?
I noticed that you were a descendant of Alford's, so thought maybe in your searching, you might have looked up to see if he had a death record.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Don in Indiana

I have a good deal of info. on this line as my Grandmother was Tilda (Matilda) Cochran. I'm just now beginning to enter the info in Ancestry along with some other relatives. following is some of the info:

The Cochrans, my maternal grandfather's forbears, descendants of JOHN, Earl of Dundonald, of Paisley, Scotland, who went over to Ulster in the north of Ireland before 1570 with his three sons-HUGH, JOHN, and JAMES, believing they would be free to follow their faith in the Presbyterian church. But this was not to be. They were not allowed to worship openly and their marriages were not honored unless done in the State Church. They were taxed heavily and had no rights in government. So they fled Ireland to save their wealth, if not their lives, and came to America, very likely before 1720. Before 1724 COCHRANS first settled on the Susquehanna river, then the frontier. Scotch Irish fighters served as a shield to Penn's pacifist Quakers.

…………………………………………………………..
Found at this site: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/e/r/Don-E-Perki...

82. Pedigo b: 1811
_____________________________________________

Edward and Nathan Cockram

In researching the Cockram family of Franklin and Patrick County,
Virginia I have found evidence which leads me to believe Edward Cockram who
died in Franklin County, Virginia between May and June 1816 was the son of
a Nathan Cockram. Following is the evidence that has lead to this belief:

The earliest to date I have found Nathan Cockram is a deed recorded in
Halifax County, Virginia Deed Book 5, page 102, dated 17 May 1764. In this
deed Henry Lansford and his wife Catherine convey to Nathan Cockram 220
acres on the south side of Smiths River, in what is now present day Henry
County, Virginia, for the sum of 40 pounds. The metes and bounds of the
property are as follows:

"Beginning at Dogwood on river, South 3 deg. East 102 poles to a white oak,
West 226 poles, crossing the river to a white oak, North 4 deg. East 64
poles to a red oak, North 50 deg. east 309 poles crossing several branches
to a white oak, north 70 deg. east 46 poles to a white oak, south 85 deg.
east 88 poles crossing a branch to a white oak, south 65 deg. east 56 poles
to Elkin's corner gum, south 33 poles to a hickory on the river, down the
river as it meanders to the beginning."

In Halifax County Plea Book 5, page 249, for the July term 1766, Robert
Chandler is appointed surveyor of the road from Marrowbone Creek to Smiths
River. It was also ordered that he with Elisha Harbour and his male
tithables "do forthwith clear & keep the said road in repair according to
the law." Among these tithables were listed ________ Cockram, Edward
Cockram, William, Thomas, James, Thomas Jr. Edwards, Merry Webb and Preston
Kendrick.

In Halifax County Plea Book 5, page 400, in the February term of 1767,
William Rice is appointed surveyor of the road leading from Goose Island
Foard (possibly present day Morgan Ford) to Cascade Creek. The court
further ordered Nathan Cockram, Edward Cockram, Preston Kendrick, Thomas,
James and John Edwards among others to maintain the road according to law.

Later the same year the portion of Halifax where the Cockrams lived was
included in the formation of Pittsylvania County, which brought the court
house a little closer to them, but still at a good distance.

In Pittsylvania County Order Book 1, page 97, June term 1769, Peter
Perkins, as assignee of Henry Lansford brings suit against Nathan Cockram
for a debt, but the case is dismissed.

Nathan Cockram brought a suit against the aforementioned Henry Lansford in
the June 1771 term (Order Book 1, page 309) but it was dismissed it "for
reasons appearing to the court".

In Pittsylvania County Order Book 1, page 396, in the March term 1772,
James Roberts brings a suit against Nathan Cockram for a debt Cockram owes
his. Judgement is awarded Roberts, but no amount is given.

In Pittsylvania County Deed Book 3, page 24, on 13 April 1772, Henry
Lansford and his wife, Catherine, and Nathan Cockram, all of Pittsylvania
County, convey to Isaac Basnett of the same a tract of 77 acres on the
north side of Smiths River and bordering "the county line" for 50 pounds.
The Lansfords sign by their marks, and Nathan signs his name. The source of
ownership of this tract is not yet known.

In the September 1772 term Nathan Cockram was again a frustrated plaintiff
when his suit against William Frogg was dismissed and the judge ordered
Cockram to pay Frogg's expenses (Order Book 2, page 71)

In the March term of 1773 the Roberts vs. Cockram suit is listed on the
docket again, but no information given (Order Book 2, page 140) In the
September 1773 term, Charles Gallaway and Constant Perkins bring suit
against James Rea and Nathan Cockram, who both fail to appear. Judgement
for 2 pounds, 9 shillings is entered against them (Order Book 2, page 265)

In January of 1777 the area in which the Cockram resided was separated
from Pittsylvania and created as Henry County. Shortly there after Nathan
Cockram died. The Order Books of the new county begin describing the
settlement of his estate and apparently identify his wife.

On 20 April 1778, Sarah Cockram is granted Administration of Nathan
Cockram's estate, (Henry County Order Book 2, page 2) with William Taskell
and Walters Nunn as her securities. An inventory of Nathan Cockram's estate
is to be made by Humphry Scoggins, James Edwards and Josep.............
