Bettie Jean Snead Compston, 83, of Coal Grove, passed on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky.
The Greenup County, Kentucky native was born Nov. 29, 1930, the daughter of the late James Daniel and Helen Tordiff Snead.
She was also preceded by her husband, Ralph “Pug” Compston, who passed away June 23, 1988.

Mrs. Compston was a graduate of Ironton High School, Ironton, Ohio and a former stenographer for the CSX Railroad for over 40 years, retiring in 1991.
She was a lifetime member of the Central Christian Church and was a former Girl Scout leader for over 45 years.
She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, a church camp counselor, enjoyed participating in all church activities and researching genealogy.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James F. Snead; and two sisters, Barbara Snead Lawless and Mary G. Snead.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Compston Albert of Hanging Rock and Elizabeth Compston (Ronald) Darby of Ironton, OH; two sons, Ralph M. Compston of Proctorville and Mark G. (Brenda) Compston of Ironton; two brothers, Ralph T. Snead of Ironton and Charles J. (Yvonne) Snead of Coal Grove; a sister, June Snead (Dan) Calhoun of Houston, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Leah Rae Snead of Ironton and Lois Snead of Brookings, Oregon; 11 grandchildren, Kymberly (James) Owens, Kathy Bolen, Kerry (Christina) Albert, David (Lori) Darby, Billy Joe Darby, Travis (Jesse) Darby, Charity (Greg) Odom, Chris (Amy) Compston, Casey (Kimmi) Compston, Katie Compston, and Shelby Scior; and 26 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Woodland Cemetery with minister Phil Lemaster officiating.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home.
