To continue my "old-man memories": Aunt Iva Dean was to get a pix of Grandpa Sam Robertson taken before they left Greenup Co for Lincoln. George A's last wife I believe was a Von Grunigan from Angel Ridge. Sam was the one who married a fine "bluegrass lady" with lots of fine furniture and clothes. He had exaggerated about his fine house (He thought it was fine, though humble by standards even then.) and when they married and brought her goods and dowry and began to plod in a horse drawn wagon, up a muddy lane and she saw his house she wouldn't even let him unload the fine stuff. He went to annul the marriage and didn't even know her last name! I am full of old family stories, trivial at best and garbled, but I do remember lots of Clara's stories!
Sam was I believe in the famous "Orphan Brigade" and was a "seng-digger" of the 5th, formerly the 9th regiment of the 1st KY Brigade CSA. Having listened and farmed with Uncle Herbert and coon hunted with Leroy I was exposed to lots of family lore about the very land upon which I was raised.
Uncle Butler was a gunsmith like I was for many years and I know several stories about him. I talked to men who remembered Harvey Walls and Nathaniel Walls and Bob Walls, etc. and other Union veterans of the "Revolution" as Sam and French called it. My Grandmother Clara described it to me in her memories and I even remember French and Granny Robirds visiting when I was a very small child. I believe she was 102 when she died. Granny Robertson often held my oldest daughter in her lap and talked with me about old times. As a poor farm boy used to following a mule up long rows of tobacco and other crops where my ancestors did I felt very close to these stories. I grew tobacco on one of Butler's house sites and also Nathaniel Walls and Harvey's 2 houses. I helped farm Granny's farm and Herbert's, Paul & Velma's and uncle Marvin Gooch and Aunt Edith's. Being a good friend of Glyn and Juniors and William I got some Robertson stories as well. For example Uncle Burbon supplied a lot of moonshiners with sugar when they couldn't get it otherwise and I remember Uncle Mitchell Robertson well as well as all his children, legitimate and otherwise.
William is still alive as is Uncle Hubert and Aunt Velma.
I remember Johnny well and often saw him when he was in college living with Mike. More soon dear cousin. I look fwd. to sharing and exchanging photos with you. I will tell Mother I heard from you, too. We must work together, in our retirement, to gather this stuff for our kids. We have a family reunion each year, the Thompsons, but often have collateral relatives of all the Walls/Robertson etc. there too. Perhaps you can join us. I plan an excursion to the Foly cave this time and though I don't walk well I look fwd. to sharing family heritage with others. Please email me and open a line of correspondence, dear cousin.

Dear Cousin,
I sent an email to your address. I am indeed Janet's son and often played, farmed and hunted on all the ancestral land. I grew up on the family farm at Duncan and my girls made 12 or 13 generations of our family to live there!
Of course I often walked to granny's (Robertson) and Uncle Herbert's and Hiram's house. Also drank many times from the "Butler spring" I know where two of his homes were and even Harvey's and Nathaniel's homes as well. I am to heir a table from Butler's house on our farm. I also had many stories about Uncle Butler Wall. I even remember Granny's mother (Aunt Ruth's grandmother Robirds) More in your private email. I have several pix of family and will share anything I have!
So good to hear from a double cousin.

My gt-gt grandfather George A. Robertson was from Greenup Co. He was a Confederate veteran and married Emma Barr. Their son French Robertson, who I remember, was my great-grandfather. They all moved to Lincoln Co KY just before WWI. I remember hearing about Arch, Emmitt and also remember well Burbon and Roy Mitchell Robertson. All seem to have come to Lincoln Co with Geo A and French.

My great grandmother, whom I remember well, was Mary Catherine Robirds who married French Robertson. She belonged to James and Elizabeth Gibson Robirds. I can remember, barely, Elizabeth G. Robirds coming to my home just before she died. She lived to be 100 or 102 years of age! Two of their (French & Mary C.)children are still living here in Lincoln Co. KY. French & Mary C. moved here from Greenup Co when my grandmother was a small girl. Uncle Hiram Robirds moved here too and I remember his house well. It seems George A. Roberston, French's father moved with them and Hiram Robirds who was left to see to their belongings left behind in Greenup Co. soon followed.

I have to John and Margaret but that's as far as I have on mine, I probably have other stuff on them somewhere in this house, but because they were not my line of decent I had to cut of the info flow somewhere. My aunt was a York out of Ky. She is gone now of course but her family of Yorks started out of Va. its just so amazing how our families connect together. My daughter in law lives in MI and she is related to the Allens in VA and So is my son. So far I have not connected the two but they were from the same area. I keep telling them they are cousins lol must be that Irish blood line in them cause they are so much alike.

Sue

This line is my husbands line, Davis, LItteral, Richmond, Bryant, Nelson, Chappell, and Crabtree, Parsons LOL now the top 3 came from carter, Lewis, and Greenup co. and the others came from Meade co. to Indiana, and the Chappell and Litteral met one day by the Litteral working downtown at Blocks with the Chappell sister, the story they told was that he felt he had to marry her cause he borrowed 40 dollars from her and couldn't pay her back lol

My husband and I met on a Blind date thru my sister who worked with him 34 years ago. Come to find out that My mother and his two aunts went to church together years ago when we were both young and probably had met at some point in that same church so we got married there. lol It is such a small world.

My husbands some many great uncles was Isaac Crabtree, he was the one who was with Daniel Boones son when they were attack by Indians and killed, but somehow Isaac survived. It is so amazing the stories that come out of our families that we never knew about until we started doing this.
Sue

I have a Davis line out of the Yadkin Valley area of North Carolina, Rowen County.

My earliest ancestor there was Robert Clark Davis who married Elizabeth Redwine.

It is said that Robert Clark Davis son of a David Davis and since they had a son named that name also -most likely. Also there is supposed to be a marriage connection to the Crocket family that had also settled in the Yadkin Valley. One of Robert Clark Davis's daughter who died had this mentioned in her obituary. Never found the connection.

Davis, Clark, Pollard, Smith, etc.- some of my lines - there are so many of them it is almost impossible to trace.

Al

I think they were Welsch. They were marr'd in 1798 and came to Gibson County Indiana in 1816.

Good morning, Yes I did find this also, but its always nice to have your info checked and verified with someone else. I also thought that John was probably his son, and I am not sure but he most likely could be living with a married child. Moses Davis married Mildred in Greenup co. around 1829 I believe.
THe story was that Moses was born in Mason co. Ky. and moved to Rush co. Indiana with his parents but decided to move back to KY. after all he had no reason not to. James Davis was however another story. LOL He was caught with another mans wife, they fought he won, but the sheriff ordered him to leave Ky and not come back hence the move to Rush co. Indiana. I don't know how true the story was, but you know family folklore. This is what my husband grandmother told me.

So Moses is there in 1840 and married to Mildred by then.

But Moses could very well have been born in either Mason or Greenup, considering that when they became counites.

James Gibbs might not have moved at all in all those years, county lines just kept moving. I had a person once tell me that his uncle lived on the same farm all his life but lived in 4 different counties while alive. lol And from what I understand about Moses he also lived in the same area all his life once he came back to KY from Indiana.
So his farm probably sat in the same position just county lines kept changing. So its hard telling exactly where James might have been in 1840. the tax records for that year might help but I don't know how to find those.

Sue
Hi,

Did a little checking this morning and thought I would send along for your review:

1. I saw the Pension App you mentioned here. Dixie Dellinger is a member of our Gibbs DNA Group, a wonderful resercher ,but currently unable to do any because caring for a husband paralized by a stroke.

2.I found a John Gibbs in Greenup in 1820 census:
1 m, 16 to 25
1 f, 16 to 25
A young couple and most likely a son of James.

I also found that this John had a dau.Amanda who married a McGarlin and died 10 July 1853 at the age of 25. Mother not listed. Early Death Records of Ky.

3. From the Pension App on James I learned that he was born in Lancaster Va. Lived for awhile in Culpepper Co.,Va. Came to Ky in 1802. Lived 6 years in Mason Co.,Ky; 6 or 7 years in lewis Co.,Ky on the Ohio River and the remainder of his time in Greenup

4. 1830 Census of Greenup County Ky.

James 1 m 10-14, 1 male 80-89 ,1 f 30 to 39 and 1 f 60 to69 and 5 slaves.

John: 1 m, 30-39; 1 f un 5; 1 f, 5 to 9; 1 f 30 to 39 and 1 f 40 to 49 (lastly prob. a sister?

You may have all of this, but evry little tid bit helps.

I could not find James in the 1840 census ,Ancestry.com records. But he had to be there unless living with someone else - a married dau. perhaps??

Al

I placed his age at 1754 if he is the same James Gibbs that was in the REV WAr with a record. I found the record but it did not mention his children or wife mores the pity it mainly just talked about his service, he was in the Navy part of the service. And he himself did not know his age but he estimated it between 75and 80 in 1834 in Greenup co. KY. And he did move there from Culpepper co. va. Was he born there, I have no idea of that either, So was the will written that soon, yes it could have been, but the date I saw was probated on 1843 so until Carol gets back to me on it its had to say.

I goggled James Gibbs ,Greensup Co.,Ky. Seen mention of Mildred and possibly two others being possible daughters, individuals looking for information that is. Seems James Gibbs may have came out of Culpepper Co.,Va. Did find the following:

James Gibbs Will Book 3, pg 96 dtd Dec 19, 1835 and mention of two slaves: Henry & Charlotte. This was early for him to be writing Will unless he was aged???

Al

That's ok I will thank her for you as well, I have been working on the Davis line since 1980 and have tried unsuccessfully as well to prove Mildred Gibbs father, this will is the first I have heard that she might be mentioned in. I sure hope so. It would actually be nice for a change to find something positive. I am surprised that its not been posted before, but then I have only found out today that it existed and never tried to look before.

Sue

Hi I was wondering if you ever found any info on James Gibbs who was listed in the 1820 census. I saw where he had a will for Jan 1843 in Greenup co. that might have listed his children.

Thanks
Sue

Hey Vic, I am in Ct. and in the process of moving back to
The area. I was unhappy in Texas. I think that you have to be born there
to get it.

I am going to be driving through Kentucky and will round up a cousin of mine to see if we can find out where he lived. We can then go to the current owners and see if they know anything. Maybe they will even let us walk the property.

I will try.

Hope y are all well !!!

Laurel

My Great Grandfather's name in Elmer Monroe Braden "Bud" and he was from Louisville Ky. He married my Great Grandmother Louise (Nation) Braden and they lived in Kansas City, Mo where they owned a bakery and this is where he passed away in 1961 I believe. Could this be the same Elmer Braden you are looking for. I believe he had 2 sons from his first marriage and the last my Great Grandmother knew they were still in Louisville.

I am searching for any information about my great-grandmother, Margaret Atkers. She is listed as being born in Greenup County in about 1852. She married David Miller from Boyd County, KY, in about 1873. They had three boys: Edward, John W. and Robert R. I have not be able to find anyone with the Atkers surname nor any other close spelling.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
