John, your statement, if you are of the Martins Fork HENSLEYS, HENSLEY SETTLEMENT is your ancestors home. John that is not true. Where did you get this information John?
I'm a grandson of the settlers who settled HENSLEY SETTLEMENT and know the history of it. For a short brief. My grandfather William Sherman Hensley & Nicey Ann Hensley settled the Hensley Settlement in 1903. This land came from Nicey Ann's father William Burton (Gabby Burt) Hensley.
Before Burton Hensley bought the land it was used to graze Horses, Cattle, Hogs, & Sheep by the Bales Family. The Bales Family also owned Bales Meadows which is East of the area of Hensley Settlement. Bales Meadows is in Harlan County and Hensley Settlement is in Bell County. Many people over the years think they are the same place. The dividing line between Bell & Harlan Co. on this Mtn. is Chaddells Gap.
Grandpa Sherman Hensley lived on the Settlement until the U. S. Government decided they wanted the land and ran him off the mountain in the early 1950's. The government did pay for the land but at 1903 prices per acre. As a boy I spent a number of summers living on the Settlement with grandpa Sherman.
John I must dispel the notion that all Martins Fork Hensleys ancestorial home is Hensley Settlement. Nothing could be farther from the truth. However, all Martins Fork Hensleys are related on thru their ancestors. All Harlan & Bell Co. Hensleys are related. Their ancestors came out of NC, TN & VA..
