ELIZABETH JANE ISAACS

Posted: 8 Feb 1999 5:00AM GMT
Classification: Query
Edited: 2 Nov 2003 11:29AM GMT
Surnames: ISAACS, THOMAS, JOHNSON
I am looking to verify that Elizabeth Jane Isaacs, born December 13, 1849 in Jackson County, Ky, and who married Lafayette Thomas is the same Elizabeth Isaacs Daughter of Samuel Isaacs of Madison County.

Descendants of Samuel Isaacs

Generation No. 1

1. SAMUEL7 ISAACS (JAMES6, SAMUEL5, GODFREY4, SAMUEL3, SAMUEL2, SAMUEL1) was born Abt.
1826, and died January 17, 1859 in Madison County, KY. He married (1) JANE JOHNSON September 14, 1847 in
Madison County, KY, daughter of HEROD JOHNSON and ELIZABETH ISAACS. He married (2) ELIZABETH
HARRISON March 09, 1854, daughter of JOHN B. HARRISON.

Notes for SAMUEL ISAACS:
From Janice Faulconer 4/28/1998:
Samuel Isaacs the father of Elizabeth (born 1850)
was murdered about 17 Jan 1859 (Madison Co. Vital Records). I don't
know who murdered him, but I do know that Samuel's brother, James R.
Isaacs was sent to prison in 1859 for manslaughter. James R. Isaacs is
listed on the 1860 census of Franklin Co. KY pg. 284, in the
Penitentiary:
James R. Isaacs (incarcerated 1859) 22 M KY - Manslaughter.

Notes for JANE JOHNSON:
Jane Johnson Isaacs, the mother of Elizabeth (born 1850) must have died
shortly after the 1850 census because Samuel remarried 9 Mar 1854 to
Elizabeth Harrison dau of John B. Harrison (interestingly enough the
other witness on the deed in Floyd Co.) Elizabeth Harrison Isaacs is
listed as a widow and living with her father in Jackson Co. in 1860 with
her three children by Samuel Isaacs.( pg. 868, household 191.)

Children of SAMUEL ISAACS and JANE JOHNSON are:
2. i. ELIZABETH JANE8 ISAACS, b. December 13, 1849, Jackson County, Ky; d. April 10, 1907, Laurel County,
KY.
3. ii. LOUVINA ISAACS, b. January 1854.

Generation No. 2

2. ELIZABETH JANE8 ISAACS (SAMUEL7, JAMES6, SAMUEL5, GODFREY4, SAMUEL3, SAMUEL2,
SAMUEL1) was born December 13, 1849 in Jackson County, Ky, and died April 10, 1907 in Laurel County, KY. She
married LAFAYETTE THOMAS, son of JAMES THOMAS and JELINA HUNDLEY.

Notes for ELIZABETH JANE ISAACS:
The data on Elizabeth is assumed due to census data and correspondence with Janice Faulconer April 1998.

Subject: Re: Isaacs

Fred,

I looked at all the Isaacs in Kentucky in 1860 and I think you are
right; the Elizabeth living with Elijah Johnson and Carlita is most
likely the one you are looking for. The only other Elizabeth in the
right age range is a 13 year old Elizabeth living in Pulaski County. I
don't think she is a very good candidate.

The Elizabeth living with Elijah Johnson is his neice. She is the
daughter of Samuel Isaacs and Jane Johnson. They were married 14 Sept
1847 in Madison Co. KY. Samuel's brother Fielding was the bondsman.
You will find Samuel and Jane in the 1850 census of Madison Co. KY pg
235, household #521:

Samuel Isaacs 24 M KY
Jane 27 F KY
Elizabeth 8/12 F KY

Samuel Isaacs is the son of James Isaacs who is on pg. 238, household
#570 in Madison Co. I don't know who James' first wife was, but he
married a second time to Elizabeth Davis 22 Aug 1847, in Madison Co.
KY. They combined two rather large families.

Jane is the daughter of Herod Johnson and Elizabeth Isaacs. Herod
Johnson's estate was settled in Floyd Co. (Book E pg 635):
27 Oct 1847 -" Herold Johnson's wife and heirs of Madison Co. on one
part, sell to William Hall of Floyd Co. on the other part. Elizabeth
Johnson and heirs of Herod Johnson sell for $600.00, 200 acres on the
right fork of Beaver Creek."

Wit: John B Harrison and William Isaacs, Sr. (William Isaacs, Sr., is
the brother of Elizabeth Isaacs Johnson. William md Sarah or Mary
Johnson, (listed one way on the bond, one way on the marriage return).
Sarah/Mary is most likely Herod's sister. One of William Isaacs'
daughters md William Hall.)

The deed was signed:
Samuel Isaacs and wf Jane, dau of Herod Johnson
Elizabeth Johnson
Elisha Johnson
Amy Johnson
Lewsy Johnson
Rachel Johnson

Elizabeth Johnson, widow of Herod md 2nd to Isaac Tillery who, on the
1850 census of Madison Co, (pg 240, household 590), is listed as 81,
and born in VA. Elizabeth is listed as 40, but that is most likely an
error as she is 57 in the 1860 census. Isaac Tillery didn't make it to
91, and in 1860, Elizabeth is again a widow.

Jane Johnson Isaacs, the mother of Elizabeth (born 1850) must have died
shortly after the census because Samuel remarried 9 Mar 1854 to
Elizabeth Harrison dau of John B. Harrison (interestingly enough the
other witness on the deed in Floyd Co.) Elizabeth Harrison Isaacs is
listed as a widow and living with her father in Jackson Co. in 1860 with
her three children by Samuel Isaacs.( pg. 868, household 191.)

The saga never ends....Samuel Isaacs the father of Elizabeth (born 1850)
was murdered about 17 Jan 1859 (Madison Co.

I have been told that the prison records can be searched, but I haven't
gotten around to it yet. I was also told by a cousin that James R.
served in the civil war in a prison troop. I should probably send for
his pension record, but I haven't done that yet either. James R. is
back home in 1870 living with the wife he left behind when he went to
prison. There are a bunch of land records listing the people who put up
a bond for his bail before the trial, and other things, but I haven't
researched this area as well as I would like to.

Elizabeth Isaacs who md Herold Johnson and William Isaacs who md Sarah
Johnson are both the children of Samuel Isaacs and Nancy Baldridge.
James Isaacs, the father of Samuel who was murdered, might be the son of
Samuel and Nancy Baldridge Isaacs as well, but I haven't proven that
yet. If he were that would make Samuel Isaacs and Jane Johnson first
cousins, but that isn't very unusal for the time period.

Have I confused you yet? At this point you are probably pretty happy
that I don't know a thing about your Thomas family.

Janice

12/23/1998 Additional data on Elizabeth and her sister Louvina is from Debbie Curry via her husband Ken Curry. Shae
gave her middle name as Jane and that her sister was Louvina who married Samuel Thomas the brother of Lafayette..

Notes for LAFAYETTE THOMAS:
Sunday 31 August, 1997 I attended a Thomas Family reunion at Salem, VA. Beulah (Thomas) King and her sons
(Delmer Jr. and Fred) and daughter Charlotte Karnes were there. Jim Dickenson and Jewel (Dickenson) Swartz were
there. Peggy (Thomas) Pividal was there. Many sons, daughters and grandchildren of the aforesaid were there. Jim
Dickenson gave me a copy of the Dickenson Family Tree which I have incorporated in this database.
Data given me at this gathering was: Lafayette Thomas died at age 38 and was thought to have been born in Owsley
County. The date of birth and death was not known. His wife Elizabeth Isaac died at age 62 and was thought to have
been born in Jackson County. The date of birth and death was not known. Data on children that I did not previously
know is: name of son Bluford Thomas, name of Anderson Thomas' wife Lizzie (the name I found on record is Martha
Cathers), name of Lee Thomas's wife Jane Pattern and had 3 sons and 4 daughters, name of Sam Thomas's wife Emmie
and had 1 son and 3 daughters, Bill Thomas had 1 son and 3 daughters.
Marge Turner did a CD lookup for me and E-mailed the following Owsley County Census data:
1850 Owsley, p.277
>James Thomas 22 VA
>Salina 17 KY

1860 Owsley # 196
>James Thomas 32 VA
>Sabina 25 KY
>Lafayatt 9, Dicy Ann 7, Samuel 5, Rafert G. 3, John 1

1870 Owsley, Travelers Rest Prec. #162
>James Thomas 41 VA
>Jelina 34
>Lafayette 19, Dicey Ann 17, Samuel 16, Robert G. 13, John 11, Ceecy (f) 8,
>Emily E. 6, James W. 4, William B.S. 2.

None are on the 1880 Owsley except perhaps son John.
I wiil use this data for Lafayette until I can verify by official records.

SAMUEL3, SAMUEL2, SAMUEL1) was born Abt. 1876. She married WARREN HOUSTON May 09, 1898 in
Laurel County, KY, son of JOESPH HOUSTON and SARAH UNKNOWN.

Notes for COLINA THOMAS:
Lina was known to live in East Bernstadt, KY, when Rice Thomas died in 1966.

On Friday 5/23/97 I went to London, Laurel County, Kentucky and got a copy of Rice and Bill Thomas's Marriage
Certificates from the County Clerk's Office.
The marriage of Bill and Mollie was witnessed by Mrs. Lina Houston (sister to Bill and Rice) and Anderson Thomas their
brother.

The marriage index at the Clerk's Office was by Groom so I could not find a Certificate on Lina. I did not know what her
husband's first name was and I was in a hurry to get to the Library. At the Library I found reference to a Samuel Houston
and a Warren Houston each of whom married a Lina Thomas. Through Census records I easily eliminated Samuel leaving
Warren as the best choice.

The 1910 Census listed Lina Huston head of household , age 34, widow, CB 03, CL 02, PB KY, FB, KY, MB KY,
farmer. Two daughters were listed. Mamie, age 11 and Carrie, age 10.

In the 1920 Census Lina Houston was listed as MIL living with George and Carrie Jackson. Her age was listed as 42 and
a widow. George's age was 28 and Carrie's was 20.

Notes for WARREN HOUSTON:
I talked with Grace Flannery on Saturday 12/13/1997 and she said that Warren disappeared and was never heard from.
Jewel Swartz said, 12/14/1997, that she heard that Warren went to a store and never returned.

6. RICE C.9 THOMAS (ELIZABETH JANE8 ISAACS, SAMUEL7, JAMES6, SAMUEL5, GODFREY4,
SAMUEL3, SAMUEL2, SAMUEL1) was born November 04, 1883 in Laurel County, KY, and died May 15, 1966 in
Castlewood, VA. He married DELLA MAE JOHNSON June 29, 1905 in Viva, Laurel Co., Ky, daughter of MASON
JOHNSON and ELLEN HANEY.

Notes for RICE C. THOMAS:
SSN 224-01-6736 (VA). Coal Miner, started at the age of 11 in Kentucky. He was born in Kentucky. Eunice said that
his middle name was just initial C , that he did not have a middle name.
Funeral services were by Huff-Cook Funeral Home in St. Paul, VA. Services were at the First Babtist Church Dante, VA
by Rev. Clyde Carter on 17 May 1966. Burial was at Temple Hill Cemetery at Castlewood, VA on Tuesday 17 May
1966. He and Della are in Section 8 the Hillside Garden.
7/5/97 I received a copy of his application for a Social Security number from the Social Security Administration, Office of
Central Records Operations 300 N. Greene Street Baltimore, MD 21201. I had mailed the request on 3/30/97. The
application listed his address as House No. 613 Dante, Va. Age at last birthday as 53. Date of birth November 4th,
1883. Place of birth Victoria, Laurel County, KY. Father's Name Lafayette Thomas. Mother's name Elizabeth Isaac.
Employer Clinchfield Coal Corporation at Dante Va. Date signed November 30 1933. The age and the date signed
conflict because in 1933 Rice was 50 not 53.
8/4/1998 After the Johnson Reunion at Kingsport on 1 August I copied the 1920 Census for Dante at the County Library
in Lebanon, VA. Rice Thomas age 36, Della M. age 30, Edith age 13, Inez C. age 11, Thelma age 10, Beula age 6,
Eunice age 1 yr. 4 mo.

Notes for DELLA MAE JOHNSON:
Her birth date may be 1888, 1889 or 1890. Her marriage certificate has her age as 16 in 1905. Her grave stone has her
birth as 1888. Joyce Hamilton had her birth as 1890 from the Carter County School Census for year 1896-1897. Could
she have been 15 when she married Rice? The 1900 census for Carter County, KY has her age as 11 and her birthdate
as Feb 1889.
I believe 1889 is the correct date. From the 1920 Census (see notes on Rice) 1889 would be the correct date of birth.
She would be 31 in February, one month after the Census.

Notes for WILLIAM THOMAS:
From Debbie Curry 12/23/98:
Lafayette was born September 25, 1850 and died March 19, 1888 at the age of 38.
His son William is who we descend from. "Bill" was only 7 or 8 when his father died, so he had little to pass on to my
husband's grandmother about Lafayette. He was 27 when his mother died, though. But they evidently didn't talk too much
about the family--not the talkative sort. My husband is like that too.
