Virginia Garnes Smith, age 91 of Centerville, OH and a resident of Ohio Valley Manor in Ripley, OH, passed away quietly January 5, 2011. Virginia was born June 10, 1919 to the late George and Anna (Barrett) Garnes of Louisville, KY. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Gene W. Smith, and two brothers, George B. Garnes and Sherman G. Garnes and one sister, Anna G. Scherer. She is survived by two sisters, Vivian L. Lenberger of Louisville, KY and Delores J. Williams of Bedford, IN as well as several nieces and nephews and a life-long friend Anna Gilbert of Suffield, CT. She retired from Wright Patterson AFB in 1974 as a Management Analysis Officer with 35 years of service. At Wright Patterson, she also served as secretary to Brigadier General George W. Goddard (deceased), a pioneer of aerial photography; and she is acknowledged in his autobiography for her assistance in the research for his book. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Kettering and a 50-year member of Bright Star Chapter #16 O.E.S. A private graveside service for the family will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Arrangements by Tobias Funeral Home Far Hills Chapel, Dayton, OH.
