Hi Bill - I may have a clue. :-)

I am seeking info re: Catharina Margaretha Lehrer/Lair b.1747 Phila., PA. Her family removed ca 1753 to Brock's Gap, Rockingham Co., VA. Catharina m. ca 1767 Rockingham Co. WALTER NEWMAN - 10 ch.

Their son Jonathan Newman m. bef 1793 VA Hannah Spears - 7 ch. They removed to Jessamine Co., KY ca 1793. A son David Newman was born in Ky. 1794 & m._?_ KY? Esther Huston Boggs. He built his home "Cedar Grove" in 1820; also had a tavern on the Ky. River.

Source: Lair Family Hist., Lafferty& Nisbet c1958 They also relate a Newman family story that a dau. of Walter & Catherine Newman went to live in Ohio; on a visit to her uncle, Joseph Lair, in Licking Co., OH, Indians killed her husband and a number of the settlers (bur. in a mass grave). Joseph Lair went to Licking Co. ca 1809/10 & d. 1823.

I desc. from a WILLIAM WARD b.1810 Licking Co., OH who named a son Lair Runyon (after the Meth. minister?). In 1830 his father-in-law to be Nicholas L. Holton was appointed his gdn. (no other info in ct. rec.) I have not been able to find Wm.'s parents and wonder if he was orphaned and raised by someone of a different surname. All these famileies seem to be conneted in various ways. Meg McCalla
