Johnson County Kentucky Wills, Vol B, (approx dates 1860-1900 so far transcribed and abstracted)
Tips:
-I included every surname. They will include names of branches, hollers, land boundaries, and witnesses. Don't be turned away by unfamiliar names. A better look at the abstract should show you which surname identifies what.
-date written; Some of these wills had no date.
-nothing was added to these wills, even if I knew the maiden name of the wife etc, I added nothing.
-if the same individual appears to be listed twice or more in the will, I listed them only once. If they appeared to have been listed by name and nickname I included the nickname by inserting a slash between the names and listing them as one person. Example: James/Jamey or
William H./Willie
-court date; Kentucky law required a death to be reported to the county court for settlement of estate within three months after death. If not the court would appoint an administrator for the estate. The second court date, if any exists, shows that the executor of the estate came forward and proved that the will had been carried out, or that the estate had been settled, if no will existed. Some estates were handled in one court session, while others, depending on arguments carried on for years. If the second court date leads you to believe some 'dickering' went on as to who got what, check the archive holdings in Frankfort, as the original civil court records are there in packets.
Because I am human, and am even more human than most Please get a copy of the original document. Remember I have sometimes abstracted 2 or 3 pages down to 6 lines or so, simply because all it said was that the wife got all and then the person listed was 'all' was. The purpose of my abstracting this wills is so that you can find them, not for you to take my abstract as gospel.
