From the LaRue County Herald Feb 12, 1970 in the Looking Back section: Feb 17, 1886: A BOLD BREAK FOR LIBERTY -- Last Sunday Jailer Elliott concluded he could let his "pets" in the cage do without his presence for one day, and went to the country to spend the afternoon with some friends. when he returned he heard considerable racket in the jail - music, singing and dancing. He quietly opened the door, stealthily tiptoed up the steps and peeped in. Cad Goodin was on his heels doing the "Mobile Buck." Simon Perkins occupied the musician's stand, and Dan Hunt was down on his knees with a saw, made of a case-knife, sawing the iron bars of the cage. Mr. Elliott's presence stopped the proceedings. LaRue County Herald News, Oct 11, 1894: We have in our possession two acorns, which are almost as large as hen eggs. They were brought from near Mt. Sherman by Mr. S. L. Johnson. They are of the Chestnut Oak species and grew on a tree which stands at a point where Green, Hart and LaRue Counties join. So the question may be raised now as to which county the honor of producing such large acorns belongs.

UNDERWOOD HELD TO THE GRAND JURY
The Man Who Shot And Killed Jeff Hash Held To Circuit Court - $2,500 Bond.
Henry Thomas Underwood, charged with killing Jeff Hash, had his examining trial before County Judge W. T. Hendrickson Saturday afternoon. He was held over to await the action of the grand jury under a bond of $2,500. Underwood claims that he acted in self defense when he shot Hash, and the testimony of a number of witnesses who were examined at the trial seemed to justify the claim. It was brought out by several witnesses that Hash went to Underwood's home and started the difficulty which arose between men and caused the killing. The defendant was represented by attorney Abell Harding, while the Commonwealth's interest were looked after by County Attorney Fred Faulkner and Commonwealth's
Attorney J. R. Sanders.
As stated in this paper last week, Underwood shot and fatally wounded Hash at the home of the former, Tuesday night, December 11. Hash died shortly after the shooting. Underwood is a World War veteran and has the reputation of being a peaceable citizen.

Perkins Family originated in France with Thomas Morlaix, on to England about 1265 with Perres Kin de la Morlaix, then to Henry Perkins in 1309 at Hillmorton, England.
According to a Perkins History, the first record of the Perkins family is found in the year 1500, when William the Conqueror became King of England. He brought with him from Normandy his brave and faithful Soldier Warwick and John Perie, his steward, who had charge of the thousands of acres of land granted by the King to Warwick.
According to a decree of that time, every first son should bear his father's name with the addition of "kin", so John Perie's son was called John Periekin 2nd. He succeeded to the Warwick stewardship at his father's death and his son, while still a young man, succeeded to the office of steward. Later he married a Warwick daughter and had his name changed to Perkins, 3rd, and was granted the Perkins Coat of Arms. Through his wife, he became a large landholder. His son became an influential man and his grandson, John Perkins, 5th, brought a shipload of provisions to the starving pilgrims in America, arriving in Cape Cod, Mass, on November 15th, 1630.
This John Perkins settled in Connecticut and was influential in founding Yale College. (from LDS records) a Pierre DeMorlais that married Agnes Taylor....both born around 1350 whose children's last names were Pierrekins, and Perkins. Later in this lineage, there are some John Perkins....one of which was born in 1583 England, and died in the New England, date unknown.
I have read much about this alledged Pierre de Morlaix from Brittany, France. If true and if he was a true Breton, then he is descended from the Welsh tribes who established the Kingdom of Amorica in northwest France, thus giving their name to what is now call Brittany in the 5th century. These same Celtic tribes feeling the pressure from the invading Saxons left for Brittany and returned some five centuries later with William the Conqueror comprising a full one third of his army. After seizing control, they were given lands in the west and the north among the local native British tribes. They were blooded kin. This is all historically documented.
Technically, the family orginated from French ancestors. The Frenchman Pierre de Morlaix changed his name to Peter Morley. His first son as a "kin" became Pierrekin. Henry Pierrekin's son became John Perkyns (the orginal spelling)who changed it to the English spelling Perkins.
The Perkins name originated almost exclusively along the current border between England and Wales.Since the Welsh people populated this region in superior numbers and again used exclusively, patronymic names as their surnames, it is reasonably accurate to conclude that for the most part, that most Perkins families originating in this region were indeed Welsh in blood, but could have been living in the English counties along the border. The Normans use the Welshmen,in great numbers, as their Soldiers, Seneschals and tentants in the Marches. The Warwick Castle Perkins line is a good example, they being part of the Ufton pedigree and the progenitor being one Peter Morley Perkins from Salop, the heart of Welsh Country in England. In this family we find a old pedigree taking it back to the Kingdom of Meroineth in North Wales.

Note: Roberts birthdate has been questioned. It is listed as Aug 1892 a number of places. His headstone is engraved Aug 11, 1893, the date he usually gave when asked.
In 1900, William Thomas Perkins family is listed between Lewis C. "Paddy" Warren and William Thompson.
In the 1910 LaRue County Census, Otter Precinct, Fam #199, William T. Perkins was 36 years old and his wife, Josie, was 34. Their children were: Robert, 14; Charlie, 12; and Everett, 8 months.
The 1920 LaRue County census, Otter Precinct, fam #180, shows William Thomas Perkins (age 46) wife Jocie Howell Perkins (age 43). Living with them are their son Robert M. Perkins (age 26) and his wife Stella B. Huber (age 21) (my parents); Gaines H. Perkins, (my oldest brother) is 7 months years old. Also living in the house were James Everett Perkins (age 10) and Mildred Perkins (age 5) (William T. and Jocie's youngest children). The family is next door to Virgil Thompson and James D. Loyall.
In the 1930 LaRue County Census, Buffalo district, Willie Perkins was family 139. He was 55 years old and his wife, Josie, was 53. He married at age 21, she 19. The children were: Everett, 20; and Mildred, age 16.
One of the first things I (Russell Perkins) did when I was discharged from the U S Navy in September 1954, was to help dig the grave for Will Tom Perkins. He died September 18 of that year. The weather was very hot and very dry. Digging the grave by hand was a real chore. The ground was so hard and dry we had to use a pick to loosen the dirt. We would pick the ground about 2 inches deep and then shovel the dirt (and rocks) out. The walls of the grave were shaved off smooth and true with an axe. I do not recall everyone that helped dig the grave, but my brother Gaines was there as was my cousin Kenneth Perkins.
Notes for Hannah Josephine (Josie) Howell:
It is my understanding Jocie and Will Tom had several stillborn children that are buried in the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery near their gravesite.
Some of the graves are marked with simple fieldstones and/or concrete blocks.
Note: In the 1920 census, Otter Precinct, there is a family #183 living in the Ball Hollow area. They are next door to Uncle Charlie Perkins and George W. Morris:
Howell, John J. (Head) age 43
Allie B. (wife) age 33
Lucindy J. (Mother) age 70
I do not know this Howell family or the mother. Could be a previously unknown relative of my grandmother, Hannah Josephene Howell. I could not locate anything on them except there is a death certificate for Allie B. Howell. I have sent away for a copy.
Allie B. Howell
471103, 62 yrs age, died in LaRue, lived in LaRue, Vol 50, cert #24790, death vol. 47.
From the Death Cert:
Allie Burt Howell was the wife of John J. Howell. Her father was Henry Brewer and her mother was Betty Hoback. She was born in Kentucky Feb. 20, 1885. She died Nov 3, 1947 and is buried at Levelwoods.
George W. Morris is also buried in Levelwoods. His wife was a Howell, so there may have been a connection between John J. Howell and George W. Morris' family.

Notes for William C. (Curley Bill) Thompson:
Zelmotis (Loyall) Perkins reported that her grandmother, Mellie Houston, had always told her that Mary Jane (Perkins) Houston's father was William "Curley Bill" Thompson. Likewise all of Jane's siblings were children of William "Curley Bill" Thompson. Their mother never married, so her maiden name was probably Perkins.
"Curley Bill" must have been very busy. Ruby (Howell) Underwood reports that he was also the father of Alice Howell. Alices's mother was Cindia Rill (Cinderella) Howel, who was never known to have been married. Alice was the mother of Josie Howell Perkins. Josie's father is unknown.
America Thompson married Garrett Warren. Curly Bill was her father. Curly Bill was murdered by rebel guerillas at his home in Green County (family oral history says that America saw the murder and that Curly was shot in the back while running for cover. They also said that Curly had his gun with him at the time. I guess that he planned to fight back. It was also said that Curly was widely know for his boxing skills and that strangers would sometimes challenge him to fight). A diary account by a Bloyd says that it was Capt Marion and his men that killed Curly Bill. A few months ago I was scanning my Civil War OR CD and found that Capt Marion was killed by Union cavalry only a few weeks after Curly's murder!
Curley Bill was a member of the Home Guard.
He was killed by Guerrillas headed by Captain Marion.
Diary Entry: (The following was taken from page 118 of William Bloyd book by Nichols/Simpson)
November 6, 1864
This is a day long to be remembered on a cold day. The Greensburg Yankees, killed the Guerrilla George Wright, on that day he fought them, until he fell, mortally wounded. He died with in two hours after he fell. Having never been any Rebel Guerrillas thru here since that memorable day until Feb. 16, 1865. Guerrilla Capt. Marion, with fourteen men robbed old Mr. Dick Skaggs, Jerry Skaggs, and Daniel Estes, Danel Williams and set fire to John Walkers house because he would not give money. They put it out themselves. They met Louis Bloyd, in the road and robbed him of $30.00 and robbed John H. Bloyd, they robbed Mr. Hagans store of $100.00 worth of goods. He had three ladys hats, they put them on and walked out and said "This is the way, we gay Guerrillas go." They then came on to James A. Howell and took some whiskey from him, they met Charlie Mat Buckner and robbed him, they come to James A. Scott and took from him a horse and broke his musket and told his family, I'm was at home. They would kill him for he had often reported to them as a Home Guard. Next they came to Gabe Warrens and combed his head with their pistols and took his money. They went out to Dr. Hazelwoods, there they stayed all night, there from Dr. Hazelwood, they took one pair of boots and one pistol. From the Drs. they went to Jim Edwards. Jim was not at home, they beat mat and robbed him of his money and boots, took his hat, left ladys hat, in the place of one. They told the children to tell Jim, that if he would go to John Bloyd and surrender his arms to him and take the oath, they would never pester him any more. From Edwards, they went to Bill Lees and gave Henry a whipping. And took a quarter from old Mr. Lee, inquired for Bill Lee, said they intended to kill him. Mrs. Lee told them he had gone to Munfordsville, From Lees they went to George Drewens, they beat him and said they intended to kill him, then ask his name. He answered George Drewen. The Capt. immediately ordered his men out of the house. they all went out and then came back to the door and ask his pardon, for treating him so said they was mistaken, they was at the wrong house. They then left him and went to William C. Thompsons, they killed him. They shot him three times. They also killed one of their own men, for begging for Curly's life. The man was on his knees with one hand lifted towards heaven, praying for Curly, when they shot him and killed him. They burned up the house and everything in it. Shot Curly's two horses. (Willard Skaggs knows where the guerrilla is buried. It is a unmarked mound on the farm of Billy Buck Skaggs, near the old Ward's Store. A short distance south and to the left.

Letter from: Rhonda Calhoun, dated May 4, 1995: to, Barbara Wright, Campbellsville, KY:
Dear Barbara,
Thank you so very much for the information you sent me! It was a lot of help, Along with Drury, there is a Ratliff Thompson & a Keren Thompson. I think they must all be connected with Wm. C. Maybe someday I'll figure it out.
My husband, Billy, was told the Thompson's walked through the Cumberland Gap. There is also a family story that Wm. C. was killed by a rebel, but I noticed the suit that said he died in 1870. Supposedly he was being looked for and hid. When the rebels left, he came out of hiding and they come back, shot him and put his body in a house & set it on fire. Someone saw this, pulled his body from the house after the rebels left, and he was buried on a farm on the ridge. No one knows exactly where the grave is but know the general area. Since Wm. died in 1870, I guess this story is more legend than fact.
I think Lucinda's marriage application states her parents were born in Green Co., Drury was there about that time, so maybe he is Wm's father. I sure wish they had left wills. I also noticed that several Thompson's married Warren's. Do you think siblings married siblings?
From the information you sent on the Circuit Ct Records and the ones I found in Green Co, it seems this is going to be an interesting family to work on.
If there is ever anything in my area, I can look up for you, let me know. If I find out anything, I'll let you know.
Thanks again,
Rhonda
Russell,
A couple of years ago my Aunt Leona Bennett and I went searching for old family churches. One of the churches we visited was the Sand Lick Meeting House. There wasn't a cemetery near the church, but I was told that it was on down a lane past the church. I have had other people tell me that the church
didn't have a cemetery and it's not listed in any of the Green County Cemetery Books.
My great uncle Arvin Thompson told me that they "broke the dead guerrilla's arms and wadded him in a goods box and buried him by the side of the road up near Ward's store". My mother said that when she and her friends walked to school, they always walked on the other side of the road when they passed the guerrilla's grave. Apparently they still knew where it was maybe eighty years ago!
Bill (William T. Smith)
Russel,
The Sand Lick Cemetery is not at the the same location as the present church. It is on the farm of Lilian Johnson, my grandfather's first cousin's widow. I have been to the cemetery, there are more than 100 graves but only two have headstones, Jackson Skaggs, son of Richard Skaggs, and David Roberts, son of Jesse Roberts. Sand Lick was established prior to 1800 and in 1847 Randolph Robinson and Richard Skaggs bought the 250 acre estate of Drewry Thompson and donated land for a new church and cemetery. The old log church building is long gone, but as I said before the cemetery remains, but in a grown up condition. The old deed mentioned a cave and when we went to the cemetery we went over the hill and found the cave. I was told by Rhodom Skaggs that when he was a child, potatoes were kept in it.
On the same farm are two other cemetery's. Both are Skaggs cemeteries. One is the family cemetery of William Skaggs and Jeremiah Skaggs, son's of Richard and Jense (Martin) Skaggs. It is fenced off and in great shape. The other cemetery has 3 graves, Richard Skaggs, Jense (Martin) Skaggs, and
their son Greenberry Skaggs.
About the Guerrillas. In February 1865 Richard and Jense Skaggs were robbed of all there horses except a mule and 700.00 in gold. These were probably the same guerrillas that murdered Wm. Thompson. I hope this helps you out.

Green County, KY Circuit Case #1132 21 april, 1875
Hillery S. Johnson vs. Jeremiah Skaggs
Hillery S. Johnson obtained a judgment against Jeremiah Skaggs on 10 Jan, 1874, but the Sheriff could not find enough property of Jeremiah's (Jeremy) to pay the judgment.
Johnson says that Skaggs owns 80 acres on Brush Creek that he bought from William C. Thonpson. Thompson is now deceased. Thompson did not make a deed to Skaggs, even though Skaggs had paid in full. Johnson wants to claim this land for the judgement.

2nd Depo. of Hillary S. Johnson (19 June 1883)
age 56; lives Hodgenville. I am the owner of the debt sued on. I was guardian at the time of the note and my wards have long since come of age and I had to pay them off. I could not collect this debt or pay them with it. I don't owe the ward a cent.
3nd deposition of Hilary S. Johnson ( 5 Dec 1883, LaRue County, KY)
age 56; lives Hodgenville. I'm the plaintiff. There's a suit on file of William Howell vs. Myself as guardian of the Bowling children.
Jeremiah Skaggs denies that he bought the land from William C. Thompson.
Depo of Friend Carter (16 Nov. 1977 At the farm of Joseph Warren) age about 64 years old. I have known Gabriel Warren about 15 years. I live 1/2 mile from the land in contest. There's about 80 acres. I carried the chain to run the land. The land was owned by Bill Thompson. Jeremiah Skaggs and his boys have been cultivating the land 10 to 15 years. Sometimes Skaggs claims it and sometimes Gabe Warren claims it.
Gabriel Warren denies that Jeremiah Skaggs purchased the tract in controversy from William C. Thompson. Jeremiah's wife is Gabriel's sister. Skaggs became involved in debt and owed Gen. W. T. Ward an attorney fee. He purchased 50 acres from Skaggs many years ago and paid him, and Skaggs paid the money to Ward. Afterwards, on --Feb., 1862, he exchanged the 50 acres to W. C. Thompson for the 80 acres in this suit and Thompson gave him a title bond. He brought suit against Thompson for the deed. Skaggs and his sister were without a home so he let them live on the land for 3 or 4 years. He told his sister that if she would pay the taxes on the land that she might tend a portion of the land. Skaggs has not lived on the land for 16-18 years. He has permitted Skaggs and wife to tend a portion as agreed. It is wrong for Hillary Johnston to charge fraud on him or any other person in covering up their property to prevent creditors from making their debts. He forgot that people who live in glass houses ought not the throw stones.
Depo. of Jeremy Skaggs (13 Nov., 1877)
age 65 or 68; reside in Green County. I am the defendant in the suit. I have never purchased any land from W. C. Thompson and I don't own the 80 acres in question. I don't own any land at all. I owned 50 acres about 1860-1861 and I sold it to Gabe Warren for $125. Isham Thompson lives on it now. I lived on the land about 5 years under a lease from Gabriel Warren. I left there about 5 years ago. I now live on the land of my son Alfred Skaggs, and have for over 10 years. My wife pays the taxes on the 80 acres. She was to pay them and tend the land and improve it for the-----

In the 1860 Green County census, W. C. Thompson and Lydia are family 346 living in the Brush Creek area of the county. He is a farmer, age 52. She is the same age. The children in their family were:
Susan, 25; Jesse, 20; Isam, 17; Drucilla, 16; Martha, 14; Lucinda, 13; and America, age 11 years.
The following entry is from William T. Smith's Thompson book:
In the Census of 1850, Curley Bill was listed as a head of household in Green County, Kentucky. He is reputed to have had 27 children. This census lists his wife, Lydia and 12 children. In the 1860 census, they are still living in Green County and have a 13th child, America Thompson. He had two more children with his second wife, Martha, but if the 27 children legend is true, the mother of the other 12 was not his wife! His grandson, Arvin Thompson said he always heard he was a pretty wild old bird and "that there were old women back in that neighborhood, who said they had some kids by him." Various Howell and Perkins researchers have told me that Curley was their ancestor. Their families have told them that he had children with Cindarella Howell and with Mary Ann Perkins.
Bill was the plaintiff in a lawsuit against Leopold Hartfield and Louis Elmore April 14, 1859 in Green County, Kentucky. The defendants, James B. Wright and William S. Thompson failed to appear and Curley was to recover $500 from them. The records don't tell us what the case was about.
Curley Bill fought against the Confederate guerrillas, who found him in his living room. He had married Martha Houston after Lydia's death and they had two small children. He had one of these children (America Thompson) on his lap when he looked out the window and saw the guerrillas coming. He tried to get away by going through the back, but they caught up and shot him. They then went up and shot him two or three more times, killed his horses and burned his barn. One of the Guerrillas, who had gone the other way around the house, got in the line of fire and he was killed also. They say, they took a good's box, broke the dead Guerrillas's arms and legs and wadded him in there and he's buried by the side of the road, up there near Ward's store. Curley Bill's great granddaughter, Beatrice Thompson Smith recalled, with shivers, that when she and her friend's walked to school they always walked on the other side of the road when they passed the "Guerrilla's grave." That was in the early 1900s; I wonder if the Green County kids of today still have that phobia?
Bill's grandson, Arvin Thompson, who recalled this story, said that Ben Druin, whose dad lived down the road in a hollow, confirmed it. Ben was home on furlough and had part of his uniform on. They came by their place because they thought he was Curley Bill. He said that if they hadn't seen him with his uniform on they would have killed him.
