18 iv. Nelson Joseph, born Abt. 1832; died Apr 1860 in Long Creek, Magoffin County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Owens; born Abt. 1832 in Half Mountain, Magoffin County, Kentucky; died in Kansas.

Notes for Nelson Joseph:
Nelson Joseph b. 1832, d. Apr. 1860? His death date is unknown, Court records of Oct. 1864 indicate that he predeceased his father. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Owens, dau. of Robert Owens & Rutha Howard as sister to Abner's wife.
In 1860 c. Elizabeth lived next to John and Usley Joseph, declared a farm valued at $100. Nelson wasn't listed in that household, Elizabeth was head of that household with Polly Joseph age 5, and a infant girl, age 1 day.
Magoffin C. Deed book 4, p. 222 proves taht Nelson Joseph had only one living child in 1869. Josephine Joseph is stated in that record "As the only daughter of Nelson Joseph deceased." She received his 1/8 share in the estate of John Joseph, his father.

It is thought that Polly to be the daughter of Elizabeth Owens from the family entry in the 1860 Magoffin County Census.

7. Clema3 Joseph (William Clemmy2, Jeremiah1) was born Abt. 1804 in Wise County, Virginia, and died Bef. Aug 1884 in Leslie County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Helton Abt. 1828 in Perry County, Kentucky. She was born Abt. 1805 in Kentucky, and died Abt. 1890 in Leslie County, Kentucky.

Notes for Clema Joseph:
When Clemmy grew up people who lived near him said he was a witch. He was a very rich man in his day. He owned a lot of land and many slaves.

When the Civil War broke out, Clemmy and his sons were Union sympathizers. This often brought criticism from neighbors who were southern sympathizers. People all around Clemmy knew he had a lot of money and that he kept most of his money hidden outside of his house for fear of being robbed.

One day a band of rebels came to Clemmy's home and they demanded that he give tem money. No one in the family would tell where the money was hidden. The rebels shot Clemmy but they didn't kill him. They hung his wife, Elizabeth on the gate post. Finally someone told where three hundred dollars was hidden. The rebels found the money, took it, cut Elizabeth down and left.

Very soon after the Civil War was over, Clemmy freed his slaves. He left with his family, the Wells family, and perhaps others and came to Kentucky. They came along the trails that led into Cutshin County. There he settled and raised several children, they had three sons, a set of twin boys and three daughters.
