Robert Carter Collins was born 12/20/1855 in Letcher Co., KY, died in Douglas Co., KS after Sep. 1900. He married Sarah Catherine Tyree who was born in Clay Co., KY on 9/10/1873 in Letcher.

Robert Carter was the son of Robert Collins and Anna Banks. Robert was the son of Thomas Collins and Nancy Williams. Thomas was the s/o Samuel.

According to many sources, the Collins were not of Indian lineage, but were Melungeons.

In the 1830 census in Ashe Co., the Collins were listed as Free Colored People. In later census, they are simply listed as white. Wm. P. Grohse of Sneedville, TN wrote "WAlk Towards the Sunset". The play was held for several years and folded about 1975. Not factual account of the Melungeons but more to publicize the town and heritage. Most people there traced their heritage to Vardy Collins who was born in Grayson Co., VA, lived in Ashe Co., NC before moving to TN.
