Hi Pam still stuck,
Rachel Lee, a wife of Henry C Bates of Letcher Co KY and Isaac Friley of Roanoke VA, and mother of my Hortense Lee (Hortense b. 1861) is still a brick wall for us. I am getting a few hints every now and then...I will share what I have or what I think I have. I can only hope I am following the right leads. Maybe someone else can help us!
Vickie Stevens transcribed a birth record here for Rachel Lee's daughter which lists Rachel's birth place as Russell County Virginia so we gotta keep digging in Virginia for info on the Lee parents.http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyletche/1874births.html
someday the answers will be found.
As far as David Lee and Sarah / Nancy Taylor goes I only have that hint from the annotated census that they are Rachel Lee's parents. Hortense named one of her children David probably after her grandfather but I am not sure that Hortense even knew her her grandparents or even her natural father. no father listed on her birth record.

Have a good weekend.
