Guess/Gass connection- and info on a COL Guess...

Looking for info on the Madison County Guess family; early ancestor was John Guess, b: 1760, d. 1822. I want to see if/how there is any connection between this John Guess, the "famous "pioneer John Gess, and David Gass. I understand that Gass/Gess/Guess are variants of the name. I want to see how my ancestor ties into the first Kentucky settlers.

Also, looking for information on (COL?) John Guess (the above listed Guess' son- b.1797, d. 1880). I was told that he was a soldier, and some say a Colonel. If someone has any evidence of this, and could tell me his rank and affilliation, I would really appreciate it. I am currently in the military, and all of this would be nice to know.
