Thanks. I've been utilizing my great aunt's paper work and research. They indicate that John McGinnis Johnson is in my family line. His first wife wife was Elizabeth Dalbey. From the marriage records they were married 18 Feb 1830 (Virginia Marriages 1740-1850). The children from that marriage were (from my great aunt and grandmother's genealogy records):
Joseph Asbury Johnson (my line) m Elizabeth Jane Burgess in KY
John William Johnson
James Edward Johnson
J. Hamilton Johnson
George F Johnson (Civil War Vet)
Josiah Dallas Johnson
The 1860 census shows Elizabeth Johnson in West Columbia, Mason, VA (which I believe is now in WV). She is living with the two younger sons George and Dallas. There is no indication when John McGinnis went to KY and he was not listed in the 1860 census. He was married for a second time and there were two children from this marriage.
Ulysses Grant Johnson
Phil Sheridan Johnson
Their records also indicate that the parents of John McGinnis Johnson were Joseph Johnson and Anna McGinnis (is that Harriet Anna McGinnis?). Elizabeth Dalbey's father was Rev Joseph Dalbey and ? Stowbridge.
My aunt has a book that belonged to PS Johnson (Phil Sheridan Johnson) of Oppy, KY that was given to Joseph Asbury Johnson and also a lithograph military encampment picture that was sent to Joseph from George F Johnson in 1862.
I cannot find either John McGinnis Johnson or Elizabeth Johnson in the 1850 census. In fact, the 1880 census is the first time I can find John McGinnis Johnson.
So I think we are somewhere in the Johnson-McGinnis-Dalbey line.
