I am reposting the photos becasue I missed two and they were very small. Sorry to bother anybody. These are quite large - about 2 1/2 ft. bt 3 ft.

We have had three photos in the family for generations. We think that they are of Rachel (died 1891) and Frederick (died 1902) Schatzmann who lived and died in Maysville. They are attached. But I have heard that sometimes these types of pictures can get misunderstood. Does anybody recognize these types of photos? The photographer?
It's hard to see much from the small photo, but I am making a guess that it is a charcoal enhancement. Read through some of the info on this "photo detective" site and see what you think:
http://blog.familytreemagazine.com/photodetectiveblog/defaul...

I'm not sure if you will get my message I sent you.I do not know of William Griffith the father of our ancestor Rachel Griffith who married Thomas Henry Williams in 1841 in Mason Co., Kentucky. This is my genealogy: Mary Clifton married Andrew Griffith they had a daughter Margaret Ann Griffith born 1829 Mason, Kentucky & she married Thomas Forrest VanMeter born 1821 Cape May, New Jersey {Made Deacon at Kentucky Conference}. Then Margaret Ann Griffith & Thomas Forrest VanMeter had a daughter Margaret Ann VanMeter {was called Annie at times} born 1857 Sardis, Mason Co., Kentucky. This Margaret Ann VanMeter married William H. Eppihimer. Margaret Ann VanMeter & William H. Eppihimer had a daughter Anna May Eppihimer born 1881 Louisville, Kentucky. Now Anna May Eppihimer married Joseph Edward Williams in Jefferson Co., Kentucky. But he is the only one I know of that was in Kentucky of this Williams family.Joseph Edward Williams was the son of Thomas Williams & Hannah Ashby.Thomas Williams & Hannah Ashby had 9 other children besides Joseph Edward Williams. I do know for sure this Williams line was in Crawford County, Ohio in 1880 Census. I have found 2 of the ten children births. My Joseph Edward Williams on the birth record it says Edward Williams & Mary {Carrie- known to me as} on birth record says Caroline Williams.Thomas Williams born 1833 England & Hannah Ashby born 1842 England said to have married in Wisconsin but haven't found proof.1 daughter was said to be born Mary Hannah Williams born 1860 in Wisconsin. I don't know if any of this helps.

But I am very interested in your links to William Griffith the father of our ancestor Rachel Griffith who was born in 1817 in Mason Co., KY and who married Thomas Henry Williams in 1841 in Mason Co., KY. I see you mention Williams in the surnames you are interested in. I have some hope.

Phil,

I was able to get to the library yesterday and found the Draper Manuscript source that you referenced. I found it as you had described, very faint. In fact, I don't think I would have been able to decipher much of it without your initial transcription. I have a slightly different interpretation, but mostly the same. The interview was conducted by Rev. John D. Shane (1812-1864) who collected histories of Presbyterian & pioneer life in KY. As you said, it is undated. Here is what I have:

1. Saml Campbell son of Thos. P.C. and grandson of John P.C. lives in the edge of Henry Co. - not far from ?Pleasurville. met with [?him/in] the _?_ between Henry & Louisville. Mrs. Eliz th C. Harris was a sister of John P. Campbell. Her husband died in Louisville. (was not his name Edward?) Her son Alfred Harris now lives in Louisville, on Jefferson Street, below Shi_l[v/n/u]y Street. Her daus were
1. Isabella - married in Louisville - married a Mr Gibbs - now lives in Hawesville
2. Margaret not married
3. Nancy married a Mr. [H/T/P]ill
4. Sarah married a Mr. Thornton __?__in Hawesville
__?__ married Thomas P Campbells [last/first] dau

Some of these details do not correlate with my research. i.e., Edward HARRIS, Jr. died 1824-1825 in Mason Co., KY. I didn't find a Will but there is a record of the sale of his property (Mason County, Kentucky, Wills and Estates Book "F", 1823-1826; pages 256-259; Dated 8 Apr 1824; Recorded 9 May 1825), and, Eliza Isabella HARRIS and Thomas Newman GIBBS were married in Hancock Co., KY (Hancock Co., KY Abstracts of Marriage Book 1B; page 29). However, I still think that the Isabella mentioned in the interview is my gg-grandmother, Eliza Isabella HARRIS, and that her parents were Edward Harris, Jr. & Elizabeth CAMPBELL.

I did find Thomas W. & Sarah THORNTON in 1850-1870 Hancock Co., KY Censuses. In 1850, they are living 5 housholds away from Thomas N. & Eliza Isabella GIBBS. Thomas W. & Sarah named their first child Isabel (1850-Eliza I.; 1860-E.I.; 1870-Isabel). Thomas N. & Eliza named their first child Margaret Wallace.

I would be interested in having whatever you want to share on the Campbell line (maybe Walkers later). From what I have found from a quick search on the Internet, John Poage CAMPBELL's parents were Robert & Rebecca (Wallace) CAMPBELL. I did find a reference to Robert and Rebecca's marriage in the Virginia Magazine of History & Biography (6V431), but it was more of a statement of fact than an actual marriage record. You can contact me directly if you would like at: jgwheat10@aol.com, or, here on this message board, whichever you prefer.

Again, thank you so much. I would never have found this information without your help.

Jane

Phil,

Thank you!! This is what I have been looking for, for a very long time. I am excited beyond words.

Thomas N. GIBBS & Eliza Isabella HARRIS were my gg-grandparents. They married Sep 1841, but the marriage record is in Hancock Co., KY [Hawesville, Hancock Co., KY Abstracts of Marriage Book 1B, page 1], so, a little more work needs to be done to be absolutely sure.

I have been working on the theory that Eliza Isabella was the sister of Alfred W. R. Harris. Alfred is in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY from 1830 through 1880 censuses. His parents were Edward HARRIS, Jr. & Elizabeth CAMPBELL, married 1799 in Mason Co., KY. Thomas & Eliza Isabella are in the 1850 through 1870 Hancock Co., KY Censuses. Thomas d. 1876. Belle d. 1880, apparently before the census was done, but she is in the Mortality Schedule which gives her father's birthplace as Massachusetts. Edward Harris, Jr. was born in Mass.

You have made me very happy. I think my local library has the series CC (Kentucky Papers) available. Thank you so much for your help.

Jane

Henry was the grandson of John Poage Campbell who was the brother of Elizabeth Campbell. The interview is not dated.

The ink has faded badly and the following is the best transcript I have been able to make:

"Mrs. Elizabeth C.
Collins. . . . well, that explains why I could never find Mary Ann in the 1860 census; after your note, I got the IL marriage record for her and Joseph Collins on the IL Archives site, and found her on the 1860 census, but his name was listed as Jonas; son Charles was listed as 'Mass' and a 3-year old Catherine is listed as 'Mass.' But, by 1870, she's listed as Mary A. Moss, head of household, with her son Charles M. Moss and his wife Adaline, still in Camargo, Douglas, IL; Catherine is not with MaryA. and I didn't find Joseph Collins. Then in 1880, she's listed with son John J. Moss and family in Rice twp., Ringgold Co., IA. That was on 29 June 1880, but on 8 June 1880, she was in Hopkins, Nodaway co., MO with her granddaughter, Sarah. Several years ago, I received a phone call from a man in IL, who said he descended from Isaac Moss's brother, Allen, who said that Mary Ann is buried in Muskogee Co., OK, but I've found no record of that yet, and the person did not offer to send any proof of that, so maybe she is, and maybe she's not. Her son John J. and his wife Hannah are buried in Sinnett Cemetery in Pawnee Co., OK. After I was there a few years ago and took photos, someone else took photos and put them on the 'Find A Grave' web site,

I knew that Mary Ann was the daughter of James and Anna (Wheat) Chaney (sometimes found as Cheney), and I have a marriage record for Isaac and Mary Ann 7 Jul 1827 in Lewis Co., KY; John James was born 18 Apr 1828 in Mason or Lewis Co. In "Historical and Biographical Record of Douglas County Illinois" 1900, it says "The original part of the village of Camargo was laid off in November, 1836, by Isaac Moss, Jos. Fowler, surveyor, and was called New Salem. When Moss' addition was made it was called New Albany, after which it received its present name."

I have not been able to pin down the parents of Isaac Moss, but in his will a Meredith Moss left a horse to his 'grandson' Isaac, and I've sort of hung on to that as 'my' Isaac, but don't know that for sure, and have not found Isaac as the son of any of Meredith's sons, so that is still a puzzle. But, have thought that the Meredith who was the bondsman for Margaret when she married Samuel Wheat might be her father and the same as the grandfather who left Isaac a horse. The trail to Lewis and Mason Cos in KY started in Prince William Co., VA, which was taken from Stafford Co., VA. And there, a Sylvester Moss had sons Meredith, Presley, and Triplett. And, I think all of these folks are connected to my John James. Do you think so, too?

As near as I can tell, we did not ever make contact during the time my query had been on the site.

I have been to the cemetary in Phillips County. It is out in the middle of nowhere and a storm destroyed most of the stones. It is a very scary graveyard and is on a big hill surrounded by woods next to a creek. Some of the gravestones are lost and some never had a stone. I was unable to find anything but they are there.

At one time I had made a connection between Dory Ashen and the Staton family. It had to do with Hill Drummond Staton and Hill D Ashen. I also have a letter from an aunt who nursed Ira Ashen Hammond and it contains a story about the family.
It says that was were from Charleston, SC but I think she may have been confused with Charleston, WV which within minutes of the county in Kentucky where William Ashen was born and possibly Dory. If you would like me to type up the story/letter and email it to you I can. Apparently they left Kentucky (then West Virginia) for Phillips Co, Arkansas because the Revolutionary War ruined them.

I haven't done much on the Moss's. I have been able to access on-line the Mason Co. early marriages but haven't been able find the Lewis Co. so don't have have the marriage record for Mary Ann Chaney & Isaac Moss.

Isaac Morse (sic) is next to James Chanley in the 1830 census of Vermilion Co., IL on page 114a. On page 106a, there is a Matheson Moss and on page 108a there is a James Moss. Isaac Moss & James Cheney acquired a land patent in Vermilion Co., IL in 1831. James Cheney acquired additional land patents in Coles Co., IL.

Since this is Mason Co. board, I am still trying to figure out the relationship also of the Drakes and Wheats, the Chaneys and Ricketts, and Edward Chaney & James Chaney.

It seems like somebody a few years ago was also asking about Mary Ann Chaney. There are 5-7 descendants from James & Ann Wheat - mostly from sons Samuel and James H.

Nice to meet you, cousin.
Also wanted to comment that Cyrus Savage was emancipated in Bracken County in 1836. From my research, I believe that Cyrus and William Savage were related o each other due to their living next door to each other and each other's family members up to the 1930 census'. I would love to know if Henry was also related to this family as both Cyrus and William had Henrys named in their descendants.

This is really interesting. I have the record of Emancipation of William Savage in Bracken County, 1850. Bracken is next to Mason. From the census records of that time, I know William to be my gg grandfather. I wonder if there's any connection between Henry and William since I don't really know where the Savage surname comes from.

I have in my possession an inscribed 1851 Navy Colt Revolver presented to Col.Leonidas Metcalfe from the 7TH Kentucky Cavalry that dates Sept.17 1862. Along with the revolver I have several peices of "photo copied" pages of info relating to him and his exploits during the war. The date of Sept,17 1862 which is inscribed on the revolver is interesting because it is the date of the battle of Antietam. Col.Metcalfe and the 7th cavalry were no where near when this battle took place, so why was the revolver inscibed to him at this time? And what is stranger is why the 7th kentucky Cavalry presented Col.Metcalfe a revolver when he resigned from the 7th in disgust over his troops deserting him on the battlefield of Big Hill?

Children of Edward Harris, Jr & Elizabeth Campbell, ca. 1800

Edward HARRIS, Jr. & Elizabeth CAMPBELL married in Mason Co., KY on Jun 7, 1799 (per Mason Co. marriage records). I am trying to find the names of their children.

Edward, Jr was b. 19 May 1768, Newburyport, Essex Co., MA. He died ca 1825, probably in Mason Co., KY. I do not have birth or death information for Elizabeth.

Edward, Jun. is Head of Household in 1810 with the following family:

3 males 0-9 (b.1801-1810)
1 male 26-44 (b.1766-1784)
2 females 0-9
1 female 16-25 (b. 1785-1794)
1 female 26-44

A presumtion could be made that the oldest male and female are Ed, Jr. & Elizabeth. Except for the female 16-25, the others could be their children, although some could belong to the female 16-25. There are many scenarios for this family group.

Edward, Junior is HoH in 1820 with the following family:

1 male 10-16 (b.1805-1810)
1 male 45&up (on or before 1775)
2 females 0-9 (b.1811-1820)
2 females 10-15
1 female 16-25 (b. 1795-1804)
1 female 45&up

Again, many scenarios for who these family members are. Two of the 0-9 males from 1810 are not in the 1820 census. One is possibly with his grandfather, Edward, Sr. Two females have been born between 1810 & 1820.

Edward HARRIS, Jr. is named as deceased in his father's Will. The Will of Edward HARRIS, Sr. is in Mason Co., KY Will Book 'F', pages 256-259; dated 8 Apr 1824; recorded 9 May 1825. I have only seen a transcript of it. Those named were: Wife - Margret; Sons - John ,dec, heirs of; Edward Jr. dec, heirs of; Daus - Nancy GREELY; Elizabeth WILSON; Sally BALDWIN; Abigail JOHNSTON, dec, heirs of; Son in law - Rev. Allen GREELY; Grandson - Edward A. HARRIS; Relationship not given - Ezra LUNT; David CALL.

I did not find a Will for Edward HARRIS, Jr. only a record of 'Sale' (WB 'F'; pgs 293-295; dated 4 Dec 1824; recorded 9 May 1825). Again, I have only seen a transcript.

I know of one son that lived to adulthood, married and had children. He was Alfred W R, b. abt 1803. He would have been one of the 3 males age 0-9 in 1810. A W R married Mary J. D. JOHNSTON in 1826 (not sure where). He is found in the 1830 - 1880 Censuses of Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY.

Does anyone know who the family members were living in the HH of Edward HARRIS, Jr. in the 1810 &/or 1820 Mason Co., KY Censuses?

Thanks for looking,

Jane
Thank you so much for taking the time to look up these details for me. I'm going to try and respond to your three posts within this one.

In a publication written by Edward HARRIS, Sr's great-grandson, William Preston JOHNSTON, it is stated that the ancestors of Edward HARRIS, Sr. were "evidently stiff-necked Puritans" [p.14]. "His family was one that had braved the wilderness to escape the religious persecution of the mother country, and were not only Presbyterian and Dissenters in church, but actually, if not avowedly, republicans in sentiment." [p.25]. Source: 'Edward Harris and His Ancestors 1634-1820' by William Preston Johnston; 1899, Louisville, Kentucky, Press of John D. Morton & Company. Based on that I would say their denomination was Presbyterian but I am not familiar with the churches in Mason Co. in that era. Wm Preston JOHNSTON was the son of Gen. Albert Sidney JOHNSTON. Gen. A. S. JOHNSTON was the son of Dr. John JOHNSTON & Abigail HARRIS. Abigail HARRIS was the daughter of Edward HARRIS, Sr. and the sister of Edward HARRIS, Jr. Gen. Albert S. JOHNSTON died 1862 in the Battle of Shiloh while in command of the Confederate Army.

The Worldconnect page that you referenced is that of Edward HARRIS, Sr. & Abigail ATKINS. A close look at the children listed there in comparison to the Mason Co. Marriages and Edward, Sr's Will shows this to be his family.

Regarding Mrs. Margaret HARRIS in the 1830 Census, I believe that is Edward, Sr's widow. His third wife and not the mother of any of his children. The only child of Edward, Jr. that I know of, Alfred W. R., is in Louisville, KY in 1830; however, if you are using Ancestry.com for Census information, you will find him (as well as 4 other Harrises) in Hopkins Co, Louisville Twp. This is an error on the part of Ancestry.com and they do not seem inclined to correct it. A look at the census page clearly shows it as 'City of Louisville'. Also, the 1830 Jefferson Co., KY Census in book form lists A. W. R. HARRIS there.

Regarding the grandson, Edward A., I do not know who his father was. My best guess is that he was Edward, Jr's son because Edward, Sr's other son, John, apparently "married a Miss TITCOMB, of Philadelphia, and was a merchant there." I suspect Edward A. is the male 10-15 in the HH of Edward, Sr. in 1820 Mason Co.

Thanks again for your help.

Jane

Mrs Margaret Harris is living alone in the 1830 census for the Washington area of Mason Co., KY and she is "of eighty and under ninety." I have to believe that some of her family was living nearby, but I'm not seeing them in that census line up.

On the 1840 census in Maysville Ward 3, Mason, Kentucky there is Bartley(20-30), Richard(20-30), and Thomas C. Harris(20-30) households.

There is am 1854 Mason Co., KY death record for Louisa Martha Harris, dau. of Joseph & Roseanna Harris. She was two and died of croup on Dec 23, 1854 in Germantown.

Do you happen to know what religion this Harris line was?
