I saw your post on the Mercer County list. I am also a descendant of Sylvanus Pipes. He is hard to document. There is some mention of him in land records and one American Revolutionary pension (not his pension) in NC. He is mentioned in his daughter's marriages in Mercer County, KY and he is probably the one living with Pleasant Pipes in Howard County, MO in 1820. I have never found a single document that connects him to the Pipes Family that came from NJ, but he is so often in the proximity of those other families, he almost has to be one of them. There is a lot of information on the web that he was married to Lucy Sparrow Hanks, but there is no record of that either. Some think that at best she was a second wife. Since you are close to where his father died, maybe you can find something about the children--Sylvanus and his siblings, but I don't think they ever lived in SC--just the father and his second wife.
