According to John Brown's son Andrew Jackson (through his son John W, who told his grandson), John was not hung by Yankees, but by NC Home Guard. He was accused of stealing money from them. They then burned John's wife, Sarah, and kids out of there home. The wife and kids lived in somewhat of a cave in the mountains through the winter after John's death. Many of them then went into Virginia. I talked to John W's grandson, who told me that his dad, Andrew Jackson, relayed to story to him about the cause of the death. He has taken me to the area where the hanging took place as well as the site that the family lived in after the hanging.
