Spencer County Kentucky is the birthplace of my Great Grandfather William Edward Stevens. According to his death certificate (1950) he was born in 1862, the son of James Stevens and Sarah E Brown.
Have found geneaology records and gravesites linking James C Stevens and Sarah Elizabeth Stevens to Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Briar Ridge Kentucky. James C Stevens was born in 1828 and died in 1864. Apparently William was an orphan. I found William in the 1870 Spencer County Census living with the family of a John Herrington. He was listed as an 8 year unrelated child.
Am seeking conclusive evidence that William was the son of James C Stevens. The dates and location fit very nicely, but am lacking documentation.
Found a Spencer County record showing that Sarah Elizabeth Stevens married a Thomas Stewart in Nov 1864. William may have lived with him for a while, but can find no record of such.
To complicate matters a bit, I find that James C Stevens and his parents Edward and Mary Stevens' names were changed from Stephens to Stevens between the 1850 and 1860 Censuses.
Would appreciate a response from anyone knowledgeable about this bit of history. Any suggestions?!
