The brutal murder of William Arles "Curly" Shelton electrified the community in early December of 1957, and remains unsolved to this day. Someone uaws hia bare fists to beat Shelton to death, and then threw him face down into the front seat of his 1953 Ford convertible, which was parked at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Club on US 41-A, according to reports in The Gleaner and the Evansville Press. Some said that Doug Oldham did it but he was ruled out by the police. The only suspect named was a big fellow from Madisonville named Shelly Knight, who had taken up with one of Shelton's former conguests called Judy Cates.
She stated she was Shelton's wife and he was the father of her son born six weeks before his death. Fernwood Cemetery was where he was buried Dec. 8, 1957. Still an unsolved murder in 2010.
