I posted this in response to a message on the Salley BB.
Hi Kathi - I ran across your post in my search for any links regarding George W. Salley, my gggrandfather. Currently, I'm looking for GW's parents. I got the this email from a mailing list a few days ago. The George mentioned in the email is indeed my gggrandfather but I've concluded that GW's father's name is misspelled (Hircael) and is Hiscal because I cannot find a Hircael anywhere in my search. In any event, I hope the information helps some one in search of their Salley relative.
"Hi Mark,
First let me say, I asked my Mom who is 100 about Robert Mason Salley and the shooting.
1920 Hazel green (Wolfe Co.) Ky. census
93 SALLEY
Robert 26 HH/wid
Orene 5 dau
Byrd 3 son
Robert Mason Salley was shot and killed on election day by Clifford Peck. Mr. Peck was married with children and his family were neighbors of Judge Day family. Mom/Cora Day went to school with Clifford and his family was very nice as she recalls. She thought they rented their house but not sure.
She thinks the parents of Clifford were Jack and Melissa Peck and he had a sister named, Myrtle.
Now:
Do you have the book, "History of Wolfe County"?
In that book, I see:
Hircael Salley was born in Virginia in 1836, married Patsey first, and moved into Kentucky about 1860. He remarried to Martha by 1870. Hircaels children were: George (1855), Sarah Jane (1858), John F. (1860), James (1862), Greenberry (1864), and Rebecca (1867). Hircael and his son, John F. both died in 1879. Their deaths were recorded in the special Mortality Census Records taken in Ky. for that year.
1-George Salley married to LouVerna. They had a son named Floyd.
2-James married Marthat Hampton, Their children: William Howard Taft, Rosie, Calley, Meddie and Freeland.
That is in the book pg. 387.
Good luck and hope this helps.
