ATKINSON COLLEGE AND BAILEY DORMITORY READY FOR SEEKERS OF EDUCATION.

Interesting Exercises Last Sunday Afternoon by Bishop Walters And Others.

Atkinson College for the higher education of the colored people is now one of the certain and assured institutions of Madisonville. The school building is finished, the dormitory is finished and the whole was dedicated last Sunday afternoon by Bishop Alexander WALTERS, of New Jersey, of the Methodist Episcopal Zion church. The exercises were conducted in the chapel and before a large audience. Several prominent white citizens were present by special invitation from President WALKER.
Bishop WALTERS is an intelligent and educated colored man, was born in Kentucky, is perhaps 50 years of age and we understand was the first of his race from the State to be made a bishop. He took for his theme the text, "What hath God wrought?" The subject was well handled and his dedicatory sermon was a splendid effort. His talk was one that could be heard with profit by any people. He paid a high compliment to the white people of the South, whom he considers the best friend to the colored man.
The college has been built almost entirely through the untiring efforts and energy of Rev. G.B. WALKER, of the colored Methodist church. He was sent by his conference some two or three years since to the church at this place. He at once became inspired with the necessity of a school for the higher education of his race. He had only $13 with which to begin the building, but nothing daunted he started out to raise the funds. He finally got enought to start with and some time since Mr. J.B. ATKINSON, of Earlington, and Mr. I. BAILEY, of this place, two men who are always ready to do good, came to the rescue and furnished money to put the buildings in good shape. While many of the white people subscribed various sums, yet it was these two men who have been the most liberal in the work. On account of the liberal donation of these two philanthropic citizens the school is called Atkinson College, while the dormitory is name for Mr. BAILEY.
The college can accommodate about 100 or more students and already several have entered. Next spring it is expected that there will be a good attendance. Rev. G.B. WALKER is president of the institution. He is a good christian man beloved by his race and respected by the whites who know him. He is doing a good and noble work for his people. The Hustler has always felt a kindly interest in the colored people and has always rejoiced at any of their undertakings that had for their object the bettering of the condition of these people. We hope to see the school do well and may it live long and prosper. (Source: Madisonville Hustler, FRi., Nov. 23, 1894) note: This college was located on the south side of what is the present day 800 block of West Broadway in Madisonville. The top floor of the 3 story brick structure was destroyed in a tornado in the early 1960's and the remainder of the building was later torn down. prb
