Funeral services for Herbert Gene Mayfield, 73, of Cadiz, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Goodwin Funeral Home in Cadiz. Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at the funeral home. The Rev. Paul Cannon will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Drury-Bridges Cemetery in Trigg County. Goodwin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Herbert Mayfield died on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at his home in Cadiz.
Mr. Mayfield was a United States Army Vietnam veteran having served for 20 years in the armed services. After retirement from the Army, he began a career with the Kentucky State Penitentiary in which he worked another 20 years.
He was a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church. He supported numerous veteran’s organizations, including serving on the Pennyrile Honor Guard providing military funeral honors, was a member of the VFW post No. 1913, DAV Chapter 8 and American Legion Post No. 233.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward Mayfield and Gertrude Patton Mayfield.
Herbert Mayfield is survived by his wife of 52 years, Florence Bridges Mayfield, of Cadiz; one brother, Paul Mayfield of Kingsport, Tenn.; three sisters, Betty Blanton (and fiancé Harold Loyd) of Ohio, Joan Livengood (and husband Brian) of Ohio and Brenda Diehr (and husband John) of Ohio; two sons, Robert Mayfield of Clarksville, Tenn. and Steven Mayfield of Clarksville, Tenn.; one daughter, Laura Mayfield Fagersten (and husband Scott) of Newport News, Va.; five grandchildren, Eric Mayfield, Lauren Mayfield, Chris Mayfield, Heather Holland and Aaron Hawkins; three great-grandchildren, Bradley Mayfield, Ethan Hughes and Kayle Holland.
