TIP# 102 - KY TIME LINE 1868 THROUGH 1871:
1868:

Jan 27: Judge Andrew Monroe disappears of Louisville; body found the May 28th floating in the canal opposite the falls; possibly accidental drowning.

Feb 25: Legislature makes it legal to import Texas cattle between Nov 1 to April 1 annually, but importer to be fined if any disease brought in with them Feb 26: Lead ore found on Payne's farm in Bourbon Co; Ruddell's Mill on Esq. Nunn's place. Feb 28: Elder "Racoon" Smith of Bath Co dies in Mexico, MO - preached from 1808-1828 in the Baptist church and 40 some yrs in the Christian Church.

Mar 2: Legislature divides the state into 2 divisions, eastern & western for the lunatic asylums. The eastern division covered Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Marion, Taylor, Adair and Cumberland and all the counties east of these and the western division Meade, Hardin, Green, Larue, Metcalfe, Monroe are in the western division along with counties west of them. The eastern asylum will be at Lexington and the western at Hopkinsville. Mar 11: Elder John Gilbert, age 110, dies in Clay Co, a scout and soldier in the closing years of the Revolutionary War and a Baptist minister for 60.

Apr 9: Heavy snows blanket KY - 6 inches at Maysville; Paris has inch ½ inch thick. Snowed, hailed and rained at Paris.

July 1: In Clark Co, Malinda, a former slave and the original property of Smallwood Eaton dies at age 115. July 13: Extreme temperatures in KY - many cases of sunstroke. In Covington 5 have died, horses and cattle dying. July 26: Courthouse at Edmonton in Metcalfe Co burned with all the books and papers except the circuit court records. July 29: At Bullitsburgh, Boone Co, Wm G Willis, age 47 dies, supposed to be the biggest man in KY - nearly 500 lbs.

Aug 29: Jack Foster and his wife, Sallie; son Richard and his mother, Lucy Armstrong, black, hacked to death in Lewis Co by John Blyew and Geo Kennard.

Nov 21: Earthquake in Hickman, Fulton Co.

Dec 1: Death in Owen Co of John Rowland, age 104. States he was born in 1764 on the Yadkin River in Roane Co, NC. His wife, age 80 died 2 ½ yrs ago - all children still living (11) the youngest 49 and the oldest 70. 85 grandchildren living. Dec 20: Four young girls (3 age 13 and one 16) - Anna Reed, Mary Jeffrey, Mattie Brown & Lizzie Statton finish reciting the entire Holy Bible. Dec 25: 2nd amnesty proclamation of President Johnson guaranteeing a full pardon and amnesty for the offense of treason in the late rebellion.

1869:

Feb 20: Earthquake shocks at Lexington.

Mar 1: Menifee Co established out of parts of Bath, Montgomery, Morgan, Powell and Wolfe counties. Elliot Co established from parts of Carter, Lawrence and Morgan Counties. The remains of George Rogers Clark ordered to be removed to the Frankfort Cemetery and a monument erected. Mar 8: Velocipedes becoming popular in KY towns. Mar 13: John R Key, wealthy farmer of near Maysville, killed by his son, John J. Key.

Apr 3: Thos. Lancaster, confined for murdering Dr Gatewood, taken from prison and hung at Brownsville in Edmonson Co.

May 5: Oil well which flows at 100 barrels per day struck at 136 feet on Boyd's Creek in Barren Co. May 17: A woman presented to the grand jury of Owen Co for witchcraft. May 20: Confederate soldiers' graves decorated at the Louisville Cemetery and at other locations in the state.

June 12: A huge fire at Georgetown in Scott Co destroys 25 buildings - 2 blocks east of the courthouse. June 24: Parts of Russellville, Logan Co, now lighted with gas.

July 3: An accident at Bank Lick Creek bridge on the Covington and Louisville RR kills 2 and wounds 15. July 10: Assessor's book shows the largest landholders in Harrison Co to be Jos Shawhan Sr (2,500 acres), Thos. Negibben, 1816; Gen Lucias Desha, 1,194; Ed D Cason, 100; Andrew Garnett, 762 and Paul King Sr, 733.July 31: KY, the largest whiskey producing state in the union, has ,429,541 gallons in bond.

Aug 7: Fire at Elizabethtown, Hardin Co, causing loss of $125,000. Total eclipse of the sun - the most remarkable since 1806.

Sept 15: A black woman in Calloway Co gives birth to sextuplets. Sept: Waterworks establishing at Bowling Green, Warren Co. Sept 26: Death in Calloway Co MO of Capt Samuel Boone, 88, born in Madison Co KY 1782, grandson of Daniel Boone. His wife of 65 yrs survives him.

Nov 15: Death in Simpson Co of Alexander Chery, age 1805, a citizen there for more than 50 yrs.

1870:

Jan 3: Remarkable and beautiful aurora borealis seen between 4-5 a.m. Jan 17: Tornado hits Barren Co at Cave City, 5 killed, 3 mortally wounded, 19 dangerously wounded, 11 slightly wounded. Masonic Hall, 2 churches destroyed; every house damaged between Cave City and Glasgow Junction where there were 9 lives lost.

Apr 15: Steamboat Raven explodes near Newport killing 3.

June 8: Destructive hailstorm in Bourbon Co 3 miles south of Paris.

Sept 20: 112th asteroid discovered at the Hamilton co NY Observatory and named Iphigenia.

Oct 3: Fire in Frankfort destroys the Christian church and 2/3rds of the square, half of the Capitol grounds.

Nov 23: The Drennon House burns at Covington; several guests badly burned, L S Waugh of Carlisle dies.

1871:

Jan 1: There are over 12,000 members of the order of Good Templars in KY. Jan 12: The Regulators or "Kuklux" created outrages in Athens, Fayette Co and other locations.

Feb 12: Dr A Powell of Sand Hill, Lewis Co, drowned while being baptized by Rev J H Hough of the Christian church.

Mar 9: Fire at Richmond in Madison Co destroys almost a square block including 2 hotels, post office and several fine stores.

Apr 20: Hailstones fall in Bath Co as large as hen eggs.

July: The Eastern Railway finished to Grayson in Carter Co.

Sept 10: In Woodford Co, Jacob Harper and his sister, Miss Betsy Harper, both nearly 90, murdered. Sept 15: In Shasta Co CA, Harvey Thacker dies at aged 128, relative by marriage of Daniel Boone.

Oct 2: Two deaf-mutes married at Wilsonville in Spencer Co - service by sign language, held at the KY Deaf & Dumb Asylum - Geo Schoolfield to Miss Emma Beard. Oct 7 thru 10: The great Chicago fire. Oct: James Jeffries of Russell Co has 19 children which includes 7 pairs of twins. He has 10 brothers and these brothers have 37 pairs of twins.

Nov 15: Death of Thos Brannon, Ballard Co, at age 100, a soldier of the battle of New Orleans.

Dec 27: Great fire at Somerset in Pulaski Co - destroys courthouse, 2 banks & 14 businesses. Dec 31: Terrible storm in Mason, Robertson, Scott, Harrison, Bourbon, Fayette and Franklin Counties.
