TIP#95 - KY TIME LINE 1865 THROUGH 1867:

1865:

Jan 6: Gov Bramlett reports, while in Washington, DC, that the total enrollment of persons liable to military duty in KY to be 133,493; of whom from the beginning of the war until 1 Jan 1865 - 76,335 volunteers have been furnished to the US Army (61,417 white and 14,918 black). Jan 8: The court house and public records at Owensboro are burned by guerrilas under Davidson and Porter. Jan 9. US Senate passes a bill setting free the families of slaves who have enlisted in the US army. Jan 10. A young man named Allen from Todd Co of Col Malone's Confederate command is captured and shot to death by the Federals in retaliation, while in Christian Co, for the shooting of a Federal soldier by one of Malone's men. Jan 20: Nathaniel Meeks of Grayson in Carter Co, a Confederate of Co A, 10th KY is executed at Louisville for being a guerilla. Jan 21: Legislature imposes a tax on dogs in KY of $1.00 each to benefit the common school fund; owners now responsible for all damages their dogs do. Jan 25: Guerrillas reportedly have burned the court houses at Albany in Clinton Co; at Marion in Crittendon Co and at Taylorsville in Spencer Co. Jan 27: Military prison at Louisville set fire, 30 sick and wounded rebel prisoners escape but one prisoner, John A Moore is burned to death. Jan 28: 18 Federal Home guards go into Bloomfield in Nelson Co and plunder the stores; 60 guerrillas under Sue Munday and Magruder dash into the town and attack them - 17 are killed.

Feb 2: 25 guerrillas under Capts Sue Munday (Jerome Clarke) and Quantrill dash into Midway in Woodford Co, robbing the citizens, burning the railroad depot, and robbed farmer R Aitcheson Alexander of 15 horses. Feb 7: By an act of legislature, among other items, it is noted that "if no officers authorized to grant marriage licenses in the county where females intending marriage reside, a license may be obtained in an adjoining county. Feb 21: Guerrillas burn the court house at Hodgenville, Larue Co.,because it had been used as a barracks for Federal soldiers. Mar 12: Sue Munday, Capt Billy Magruder and Henry Metcalfe are surprised and captured near Webster in Breckinridge Co by soldiers from the 30th Wisconsin.

March 23: The extensive hotel at Drennon Springs, Henry Co, destroyed by fire.

Apr 9: General Robert E Lee surrenders the army of Northern VA to Gen Ulysses G. Grant at Appomattox Court House. Apr 14: President Abraham Lincoln assassinated in Washington, D.C. Apr 15: Andrew Johnson inaugurated President. Apr 26: John Wilkes Booth killed in St. Mary's Co, MD. Apr 28: The steamboat Sultana explodes and burns above Memphis with 2,175 people on board, 1,966 of them paroled Union Soldiers. Over 1,400 die, many of them Kentuckians.

May 8: Negro enlistments in KY discontinued. May 24: Gen Palmer disbands all the independent Federal scouts in KY. May 31: Samuel Robertson, condemned by a military commission for being a guerrilla, hung at Lexington.

June 15: Approximately 1,200 deaths reported among Negroes refuged at Camp Nelson, Jessamine Co, during the past year.

July 1: The average rain fall at Lexington reported to be abt 45 inches, yet this year has been 65.73 inches. Aug 15: The US Secretary of War issues an order to muster out of service 5,000 of the 21,000 men who are on duty in the state of KY.

Nov 5: Mrs Hannah Sweat of Owensboro, died at age of 106. Nov 25: Lead ore is being mined in Fayette Co, 7 miles from Lexington.

Dec 1: The remains of Samuel Kenton removed and re-interred at Oakdale Cemetery in Urbana, OH. His stone noted that he was born 13 Apr 1855 in Culpeper Co VA; d 29 Apr 1836, aged 81 yrs and 26 days. Dec 15: Large fire in Owensboro burning 10 business houses. Dec 29: Bowling Green, Warren Co, hit by tornado which blows down part of the brick walls of several houses and takes the roof off the Branch Bank of KY.

1866: Jan 9: Mysterious murder of Rev Thos J Fisher of Louisville. Jan 12: The salary of circuit court judges raised to $2,200 a year, court of appeals judges up to $2,700. Jan 13: John Spears in Boyle Co dies, age 95; had been at the surrender of Cornwallis. Jan 23: Hog cholera rages in several counties. Jan 24: Small Pox breaks out in alarming numbers among the Negroes in Louisville. Jan 26: Storm in Logan Co destroys a number of tobacco barns and stables and other heavy damage.

Feb 5. William Sampson of Glasgow, Barren Co dies - chief justice of KY. Feb 6: Aaron Dupee dies, age 78, faithful servant of Henry Clay. Feb 10: "One-Arm" Berry, a noted guerrilla, tried, found guilty on 11 counts, condemned to be hung on March 3rd. Gen Palmer commutes the sentence to 10 years in the penitentiary at Albany, NY. Feb 14: Legislature passes 7 acts concerning Negroes including relieving them from most of their legal disabilities as slaves, making them subject to same punishments for misconduct as whites (except for rape of white women), schools to be supported by taxes from Negroes, and pauper support. Feb 27: Christian Shultz and his wife, Charlotte (dau of Gen Henry Lee) celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary at Maysville.

Mar 26: Duel fought on the farm of Jas K Duke in Scott Co between Capt Joseph Desha and Capt Alex. Kimbrough, both of Harrison Co. Kimbrough wounded in the hip.Mar 27 & 28: Negro arrested, taken out of jail and hung for the rape of a white child at Paris, KY. Mar 28: Bertrand, a returned Negro soldier is hung by a mob at the same location for murdering and raping a daughter of Thos. Doolin.

Apr 1: Lead ore is discovered in Owen, Scott, Fayette, Grayson and other counties; oil is discovered in Barren, Cumberland, Pendleton, Montgomery and other counties. Apr 26: Ten distilleries are closed in the Louisville district for violations of the internal revenue laws.

May 3: More hangings of Negroes for rape - one in Jefferson Co, one in Frankfort and later, one in Owensboro. May 4: Thos Joyes dies in Louisville, a Captain, aged 77 who was the first white male born there. May 12: Large emigration by wagon through central KY from North Carolina and East TN to Illinois and Indiana. May 12: Robert Merimee murders Robert T Armstrong in Paris, KY. May 30: Hemp is selling at $16 per 100 lbs.

July 23: Flood in Brush Creek, Owen Co, 14 feet higher than ever known; dwellings, cabins, stables, fencing swept away - the residence of Mr. Noel carried off and his whole family of 9 drowns. July 26: Whirlwind over Danville tears off the roof of Cadwell Female Institute.

Aug 7: Stamer Bostona No. 3 burns near Maysville and the wife of Rev. Jonathan E Spilman fatally burned. Aug 9. Mr. Buford's stable at Nicholasville, Jessamine Co, burned and 26 horses

died.

Sept 28: Over 10,000 people view the hanging at Newport, Campbell Co, of Allen P. Eggleston, alias Walter B. Watson, for the murder of Capt Almon P. Mentor, leader of the noted "Menter's Band" of musicians.

Nov 18: Duel near Bowling Green between Jno H Grasscup and Jno Blair, both officers in the late Confederate army - both slightly wounded.

1867:

Feb 5: A man named Trowbridge, charged with stealing, taken by force from jail and hung in Danville, Boyle Co. Feb 17: The "regultors" break open the jail at Danville and take out Ed Carrier to hang him; find he's the wrong man and return him. They later found Thos Carrier at his home and hang him.

Mar 17: A "sulphur shower" falls near Bowling Green during a severe rain storm there.

Apr 29: Fire at the Masonic hall in Crittenden, Grant Co, destroys several stores & buildings.

May 8: Ex-Judge Elijah Hise in Russellvile, Logan Co, commits suicide. May 10: Miss Mary Godsby of Fulton Co, has been in a deep sleep for 12 yrs, awakes occasionally and clears throat, is awake twice every day and takes nourishment, and drops back into a sleep. Complains of no pain. May 13: Jefferson Davis discharged, many influential people go his bail.

June 3: John Devine is shot & then hung by the "regulators" at the house of Wm. Carey, 6 miles from Harrodsburg in Mercer Co.

Aug 3: Regulators hang Nathan Lawson, age about 70, near Cornishville in Mercer Co. Aug 15: On opening the coffin of one of the Federal soldiers at Glasgow in Barren Co, it is found that he had been prematurely buried. The pillow was lying on his breast and the distortion of the body showed that he had revived after burial and struggled terribly for release. Aug 26: The Regulators hang Leake Hicks south of Danville, Boyle Co.

Sept 1: 17 points elected in KY as "money-order post offices." Nov 16: Paris, KY lighted with gas.

Dec. Col R B J Twyman commits suicide. Dec 7: A Mr Ould, age 103 years dies near Cornishvile in Mercer Co.
