As a person with Native American ancestry, and one who has being doing this type of research for 30 years, you cannot and should not trust census records to be a true representation of ethnicity. My own family lied so they would not be forcibly removed to a reservation or to avoid persecution. The best way to look for your Native ancestors is to look for common surnames within the tribe you're researching. From that point, you will need to take a look at the tribal rolls and see if your ancestors name is there or another family members.Don't let people discourage you from your research, happy hunting!
